Chapter 5 : The Cousin's Sting

The morning sun filtered through Anya’s bedroom windows, painting golden patterns across the silk sheets. She’d spent most of the night poring over the ancient prophecy scroll, cross-referencing it with other texts from her Space Dimension library. While she couldn’t yet decipher every cryptic line, one phrase stuck in her mind: “The viper hides behind the rose; blood will stain the silver throne.”

A chill ran down her spine as she thought of Seraphina – her cousin, with her sweet smiles and sharp eyes, who’d been visiting more frequently since Anya’s “recovery.”

Just as she was about to head to the courtyard for her morning meditation, Elara rushed in, her face pale with worry.

“Young Miss, Lady Seraphina has arrived and requests an audience,” she said, wringing her hands. “She says she’s brought a gift to celebrate your return to health.”

Anya’s lips curved into a practiced smile. Speak of the devil… or the viper.

“Show her to the drawing room, Elara,” she said calmly. “I’ll be there shortly.”

While making her way to the drawing room, Anya activated her System’s “Observation” skill – a new ability she’d unlocked after completing her first Daily Quest streak. A small window popped up in her vision:

Observation Skill Activated – Target: Seraphina de Valois

Current Mood: Anxious, Calculating

Hidden Intent: Possible deception detected

Anya took a deep breath before entering the room. Seraphina was standing by the window, her back turned, admiring the garden. She was dressed in a rose-colored gown that matched her name, her dark hair twisted into an elaborate braid adorned with silver pins.

“Anya, my dear cousin!” Seraphina turned, her face breaking into a bright smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “You look absolutely radiant! I was so worried when I heard about your illness.”

She stepped forward, pressing a small, ornate wooden box into Anya’s hands. “I had this specially made for you – a balm made from rare mountain herbs. It’s said to enhance beauty and vitality.”

Anya’s fingers brushed against the box, and her System immediately flagged it:

Warning! Foreign substance detected in item – Mild toxin present. Effects: Gradual weakening of Qi flow, increased susceptibility to illness.

Rage flared in Anya’s chest, but she kept her expression light. “How thoughtful of you, Seraphina! You always know just what I need.” She carefully set the box on a table, out of reach. “Won’t you stay for tea? I just received some rare jasmine from the eastern provinces.”

As they sat and sipped tea, Seraphina began to ask questions – seemingly innocent at first, but quickly growing more pointed.

“Your father has been meeting with merchants from the northern territories quite frequently,” she said casually, stirring her tea with a silver spoon. “Do you know what they’re discussing? I heard rumors of new trade routes… or perhaps something more?”

Anya laughed lightly, playing the fool. “Oh, Seraphina, you know Father never tells me about business! I’m afraid I couldn’t tell you the first thing about trade routes.” She paused, then added with feigned concern, “Though I did overhear him mentioning something about… unpaid debts? I’m not sure – I was half-asleep at the time.”

Seraphina’s eyes lit up for just a moment before she schooled her features into a look of sympathy. “Debts? How dreadful. Your family has always been so prosperous – I do hope everything works out.”

After Seraphina left, Anya immediately took the tainted balm to her Space Dimension. Using equipment from the supermarket’s “Science & Medicine” aisle, she analyzed the toxin. It was slow-acting, designed to make her appear weak and ill over time – perfect for painting her as unfit to inherit the Duchy, or even for causing a “natural” death.

System Notification: Side Quest Update – Understand Your Situation (1/3 Complete). New Objective: Identify all threats to the de Valois family.

Reward for Completion: Advanced Poison Detection Skill

Anya’s determination hardened. She’d known Damien was dangerous, but Seraphina’s direct attempt on her health meant the plot was moving faster than she’d anticipated. She needed to act quickly.

That evening, she snuck back into her father’s study, this time using a small camera from her Space Dimension to document key documents – ledgers showing irregularities, contracts with suspicious terms, and correspondence with individuals linked to Damien’s family. She also left a subtle clue for her father – a small note in modern shorthand that only someone with her knowledge would understand, hinting that the Duchy’s finances were being manipulated from within.

As she made her way back to her room, Anya spotted a shadow moving through the garden below. She activated her “Agility” skill, moving silently to the window and peering out. It was Seraphina, meeting with a hooded figure – and though she couldn’t see their face, she recognized the distinctive ring on their hand: the same one Damien wore every day.

The serpent and the viper, working in perfect harmony.

But Anya was no longer the naive girl they’d planned to destroy. She was Li Mei reborn – and she was ready to strike back.
