Eyes On Silver
It was a day like any other weekday
Vyris woke up, as she did every morning, to face the bitter reality lived by most people.
A young woman of nineteen years, living alone in a small house consisting of two rooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom
A normal, routine life—more or less.
Yet what truly distinguished her was her enchanting beauty, inherited from her mother
She had pure, snow-white skin, long black hair flowing freely down her back, and eyes that stole one’s breath away—gray eyes, resembling silver
At times sharp like a falcon’s gaze, and at other times calm like an owl’s.
Vyris had been alone since childhood
All she remembered was growing up in an orphanage, where she was raised after being found at the side of the road at the age of five, following an accident in which her mother died
As for her father, the only thing she remembered was her mother telling her that he had died before she was even born Yes… such was life. A life from which she remembered nothing except her name.
Vyris attended university every day, where she studied astronomy
Wherever she went, she caused a stir she was mysterious and strange to many, fascinating to others
Despite the people around her and their attempts to get close to her, Vyris was extremely reserved
She had only two close friends: Laura, her friend since the first days of high school, and Eddie, a young man of twenty whom she met in her astronomy class the previous year.
Days passed quickly only three days remained until February 14th, when Vyris would turn twenty.
Eddie and Laura agreed to organize a small celebration for their friend—a simple dinner to ease her burden, as they knew how painful her birthday was for her each year. Yet this year felt… somewhat special.
The following day Vyris went out with Laura as usual to spend some time together
While wandering around, they noticed noise coming from one of the nearby alleys. Laura stopped and said,
“Do you hear that?”
Vyris replied, “Strange… this place is usually quiet.”
Laura said, “What do you think? Should we take a look?”
Vyris nodded in agreement, and the two girls headed toward the street
As soon as they arrived, they were surprised.
A large auction stretched along the street, displaying various goods—art pieces, paintings, gemstones, clothes, and many other items.
Vyris said in amazement, “It’s strange to see an auction here, especially at this time
Things are usually more organized around here.”
Laura replied, “Either way, what do you say we take a look? It’s still early to go home.”
Although Vyris was extremely tired and longed to return home and hide under her blanket, she accepted her friend’s request. After all, Laura was all she had.
The two girls wandered among the tables lining both sides of the street, stopping whenever something caught Laura’s attention Suddenly—
Vyris noticed a table belonging to an old woman.
The woman was unusually quiet—no shouting, no gestures to attract customers
She carried a strange aura that made Vyris curious enough to approach and examine the items she was selling.
As soon as Vyris reached her, the old woman said,
“Welcome, Phoenix. How may I help you?”
Vyris blushed, feeling shy
The word Phoenix was considered a compliment for exceptionally beautiful girls.
“Thank you,” she replied.
As the two girls examined the items on the table, something strange caught Vyris’s attention—an old book with a blue cover titled The Legend of the Shadow.
Vyris asked, “Is this a science fiction book?”
The old woman smiled, slightly surprised.
“Science fiction? No. It is an ancient legend that tells the story of a human and the choices they make in life.”
Her words stirred something deep within Vyris. She had always loved science fiction and similar stories, but this was the first time she felt drawn to a legend. Each time she tried to reach for the book, something stopped her—
a strange feeling…
as if someone were watching her from afar.
Suddenly, the old woman said,
“You have a strange mark… have you been in an accident?”
Vyris froze in place. The old woman was staring at an old scar on Vyris’s hand.
“I think so,” Vyris replied : “I don’t remember exactly how I got it.”
She thanked the old woman and left before Laura could say anything. Laura hurried toward her :
“What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
“Yes,” Vyris replied. “I just remembered some things I need to do.”
Laura frowned, confused : “Alright, if you say so.”
They headed home Laura knew that her friend was not well, as she always reacted this way whenever someone mentioned her past—but this time… it was not the same.
That night, as Vyris lay in bed preparing to sleep, she realized why she had left the old woman so abruptly.
She had felt something strange—fear, discomfort—as if the old woman wanted to tell her something indirectly.
Eventually, she surrendered to sleep and fell into a deep slumber.
The next two days passed exactly as planned Laura and Eddie organized a small celebration at a café by the river. Laura asked Vyris to meet her there after finishing at the gym.
A few minutes later, Vyris arrived. As soon as she opened the door, white and red balloons rained down on her.
“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Vyris!” her friends sang.
In that moment, a great joy filled her heart for the first time, she felt that she was not alone in this world, that she was finally making up for what she had lost. Despite the simplicity of the surprise, it meant everything to her.
The evening passed beautifully—light dinner, cake, and laughter rising every time Eddie cracked a joke. Minutes turned into hours, and eventually it was time to leave.
Outside the café, Laura stopped her and said,
“Wait a moment—not yet. We’re not done, right Eddie?”
“Right,” Eddie replied, pulling a luxurious purple box from his coat and opening it. Inside was a beautiful necklace from a prestigious fashion house.
“Happy birthday,” he said.
Tears filled Vyris’s eyes, she had never received a gift like this before—not because of its value, but because of the warmth behind it.
Then Laura handed her a bracelet from a Cartier collection, engraved with her name.
“And one more thing,” Laura said, pulling out another wrapped gift.
“This is another present because you deserve more—but promise me you won’t open it unless you’re alone.”
Vyris nodded and agreed.
Her friends walked her home, wishing her a good night.
As soon as Vyris entered her house, the warmth faded, leaving her alone between the cold walls once more
She placed Laura’s gift on her desk and went to take a shower to calm her nerves.
Afterward, she headed to her bed with a cup of warm milk, ready to sleep. As she turned off the lights, she remembered something—
The unopened gift.
She turned the lights back on, returned to her desk, placed the cup beside her, and opened the package.
The surprise was—
The same book.
Her expression changed instantly..
The happiness she had felt moments earlier vanished
Memories of that strange day flooded her mind.
“It’s just a book,” she whispered. “Why do I feel so anxious?”
She decided to face her fear and opened The Legend of the Shadow.
The lights suddenly went out. The electricity was cut.
Vyris froze in place, terror gripping her. She covered her mouth, trying to suppress a scream...
Gathering her courage, she searched for a way to light the room she remembered that she kept a lighter and candles in her desk drawer.
As she tried to open it, she suddenly screamed.
She had spilled hot milk on her hand, and while trying to clean the broken glass, she cut herself badly..
Blood began to flow heavily.... As she searched for something to bandage the wound—
Drops of her blood fell onto the pages of the book.
Suddenly, a strange light erupted from it—a blue glow mixed with red. The scene looked like something out of a horror film. Vyris staggered backward in terror. The only light in the dark room came from the cursed book and the wound on her hand.
She collapsed to the floor, rubbing her eyes, hoping it was just a nightmare.
But when she opened them—
She found herself in a ruined palace, filled with old furniture and paintings hanging on the walls. Darkness surrounded her. She screamed, covering her ears, until she felt a hand touch her shoulder.
She jumped in fright and ran toward a door, only for a pale girl in a black dress with orange hair and red eyes to appear before her. The girl herself was not terrifying—but her sudden appearance was.
Vyris backed away.
“Who are you? Why am I here?”
The girl smiled maliciously and stepped forward
Vyris fled, crashing into an old man wearing a black suit—bald, with mismatched eyes: one blue, one red.
Soft laughter echoed as more people appeared from nowhere...
Eyes followed her everywhere...
With no other choice, Vyris ran toward a nearby window. As she approached it, someone grabbed her arm and threw her back into the center of the hall....
She fell to the ground....
When she lifted her head, she saw a handsome young man around her age—white hair, pale skin, and silver eyes identical to hers wearing a red coat
She ran again—only to realize that everyone had stopped, watching her silently.
Ahead of her stood the same young man, wearing a red coat, standing proudly.
Suddenly, she felt a presence behind her.
She turned—
And froze......
It was the same young man—but this time wearing a dark blue coat, his expression cold and severe.....
She looked back at the one in red. He was still smiling....
Only then did she realize—
They were two separate people....
The man in the red coat moved instantly beside the other and said,
“I’m glad to see you, brother.”
The other smiled calmly....
Vyris stared at them in shock until her eyes settled on the one in blue
The moment their eyes met, visions flashed through her mind—strange scenes, overwhelming in their intensity.
She lost consciousness.....
The one in blue caught her gently and carried her as if she weighed nothing.
The one in red laughed.
“I didn’t expect her to be this fragile.”
“So, Vergel,” he added, “what should we do with her?”
Vergel placed her on a couch and replied coldly,
“Deal with her yourself. Don’t drag me into your problems. Do you understand, Dante?”
Then he turned and left the room...
