The Betrayal of the Winged Sanctuary

Armed with the newly forged Eclipse Blade, Mizu Hi and Rhea ascend the treacherous jagged peaks to reach the Cloud-Gardens of Aethel. These are a series of magnificent floating islands hidden from the world by a perpetual, violent cyclone. This secret realm serves as the final sanctuary for the Draconis-Exiles, a peaceful community of hybrids and half-dragons who fled human prejudice centuries ago. For the first time in his life, Mizu does not feel like an anomaly or a freak of nature. He sees children with iridescent scales on their cheeks and elders with majestic, tattered wings basking in the high-altitude sun. The sanctuary is governed by Elder Valerius, a wise, ancient hybrid who claims to have served alongside Mizu’s father when he was still the noble guardian of the mortal realms.

Within this sanctuary, Mizu finally experiences a sense of true belonging. He spends weeks immersed in the secret history of the Black Demon Dragons. He learns that his ancestors were not born as demons; they were originally the "Protectors of the Night Sky." However, they were eventually corrupted by a "Void Infection" from a dark, parallel dimension—the very same infection that Kage is now attempting to unleash upon the entire world. Mizu begins training with a skilled young scout named Lira, who teaches him how to channel his chaotic fire into "Solid Light" wings. This allows him to fly without surrendering to his monstrous form. He begins to harbor a fragile hope that there is a future for him that involves peace rather than being a mere weapon of war.

However, Kage’s reach is long and his methods are cruel. He does not attack the sanctuary with brute force initially; instead, he attacks it with the poisonous promise of "Purity." Using dark telepathy, Kage infiltrates the dreams of the younger, restless hybrids. He promises them "Ascension"—a process he claims will remove their "weak" human halves and transform them into "True Dragons." A radical faction of the Exiles, led by a jealous and power-hungry warrior named Skar, begins to view Mizu as a rival for Kage’s favor. During the sacred Festival of the Rising Moon, Skar betrays his kin by lacing Mizu’s ceremonial wine with "Void-Dust," a paralyzing substance that turns dragon blood into leaden weight.

As Mizu collapses in agony, Kage’s massive shadow-ships emerge from the storm clouds, tearing through the peaceful gardens. The "Ascended" hybrids—those who foolishly took Kage’s dark deal—turn violently on their own families. The sanctuary quickly transforms into a slaughterhouse of falling islands and burning forests. Kage arrives in person, landing before the paralyzed Mizu, and mocks him for "playing house with mongrels." He executes Elder Valerius before Mizu’s eyes, declaring that mercy is a human disease. This trauma causes the Void-Dust in Mizu’s veins to react violently with the Eclipse Blade. Instead of dying, Mizu undergoes a "Partial Awakening." A single, massive wing of obsidian shadow erupts from his back, and he enters a state of "Cold Fury." He successfully drives Kage back, but the battle destabilizes the magic holding the islands aloft. Mizu is forced to let his brother escape so he can use his power to guide the falling islands to safety. He saves the survivors, but his only home is gone.
