The Wrong Number

The Wrong Number

Chapter 01

The message was meant for someone else.

Eve realized it the moment her phone lit up on the edge of her desk, vibrating softly in the quiet of the room. Midnight had already passed. The world outside was asleep, but her thoughts were wide awake.

She glanced at the screen.

Unknown Number:

Hi… did you reach home safely?

Her eyebrows knit together.

She didn’t recognize the number. And the message—gentle, familiar, almost worried—definitely wasn’t meant for her.

For a moment, she considered ignoring it. It would be easier. Safer.

But something about the concern in those few words made her fingers move.

Hi… I think you have the wrong number.

She pressed send and placed the phone face down, telling herself that was the end of it.

It wasn’t.

The phone buzzed again.

She picked it up.

The typing dots appeared… disappeared… then appeared again.

Unknown Number:

Oh—

I’m really sorry. That’s my mistake.

Eve exhaled softly, a small smile tugging at her lips. The apology felt sincere. Human.

It’s okay, she replied. It happens.

She was about to turn back to her notes when another message came through.

Unknown Number:

Since I already interrupted you…

Are you doing alright?

Eve froze.

That wasn’t a normal question. Not for a stranger. Not for a wrong number.

Her thumb hovered over the keyboard.

She didn’t owe him an answer.

And yet…

I guess so, she typed. Just tired.

There was a pause.

Then—

Unknown Number:

Yeah… me too.

That single sentence carried more weight than it should have.

They started talking—slowly, cautiously. About nothing important and everything at once. Sleepless nights. Long days. Little frustrations that felt too small to explain to people who actually knew them.

Minutes slipped into an hour.

Eve found herself leaning back against her chair, smiling at her phone. She couldn’t remember the last time conversation felt this effortless.

Finally, she typed:

It’s strange… I don’t usually talk this much to people I don’t know.

The reply took longer this time.

Unknown Number:

Same.

Maybe strangers listen better.

Her chest tightened slightly.

She stared at the screen, then locked it, unsure why her heart felt unsettled.

A few minutes passed.

She unlocked it again.

Good night, she typed. Wrong number.

Almost immediately—

Unknown Number:

Good night, Eve.

Her breath caught.

She hadn’t told him her name.

Before she could type a response, another message appeared.

Unknown Number:

Sorry—

I didn’t mean to make that weird.

I’m Adam. You mentioned your name earlier.

She searched back through the chat.

She had. Without realizing it.

Her lips curved into a small, helpless smile.

Good night, Adam, she replied.

She placed the phone on her chest, staring up at the ceiling.

Somewhere across the city, Adam was doing the same—wondering why a simple mistake felt like the most intentional thing that had happened to him in a long time.

Neither of them knew it yet.
