One year had passed since the Empress' funeral.
One year since the world reset—pulling me back into a fifteen-year-old frame with a twenty-one-year-old mind.
In that time, the empire of Astrael healed slowly.
Morning sunlight spilled across the lower market as I walked through it, my basket heavy with dried herbs and clean bandages. A child tugged at my sleeve.
"Miss Chloe! Look! I can run again!" he said, legs wobbling as he demonstrated.
His mother, standing behind him, wiped her eyes. "We thought the fever would take him. The healers gave up, but your remedy–"
"I only taught what anyone could learn," I said gently.
Her hands tightened around mine. "Bless you, Miss Chloe."
The words washed over me. I didn't deflect them anymore. A year ago, the praise felt too heavy. Now, it felt purposeful.
If the people loved me, they would protect me.
If they trusted me, they would listen.
If they believed in me, they would follow me.
And by extension, protect the boy who would become emperor.
I visited stall after stall—checking rashes, offering advice, inspecting water jars. Life had returned to the streets. Children ran freely. The stink of illness had faded.
A year ago, this district had been a tomb.
"Miss Chloe!"
A baker waved me over. "My wife can breathe again. The steam mixture you taught us was miraculous."
I nodded, offering a soft smile. "She worked hard to recover."
"You saved our home."
His gratitude was a weight I accepted.
A familiar voice cut through the noise.
"Miss Chloe! Miss Chloe!"
A young boy in white-and-slate robes stumbled toward me, panting hard. His robe was too big, sleeves flopping awkwardly as he pushed through the crowd. When he reached me, he collapsed to his knees.
"Don't kneel," I said quickly, offering my hand.
He didn't rise.
"Miss Chloe," he gasped, "His Holiness requests your presence. Immediately. At the Basilica."
A stunned hush spread across the market.
Someone dropped a basket.
Someone whispered a prayer.
Then—
"It's time."
"They're choosing her."
"The Saintess—she'll finally be the Saintess."
Hands touched my sleeves. Arms brushed mine lightly. Blessings whispered into the air.
The boy looked up, cheeks red. "Please...come with me. His Holiness said it was urgent."
I let out a steady breath.
It was happening sooner than in the previous timeline. Just as I planned.
"Lead the way," I said.
He nodded, scrambling to his feet.
The market parted for us, villagers bowing as we passed.
"Miss Chloe, bless us!"
"Take care, Miss Chloe!"
"We'll pray for you!"
Their hope was a warm wind pushing gently at my back.
...
THE BASILICA
The Grand Basilica loomed ahead, carved in pale stone streaked with veins of silver. Its doors were twice my height, stained-glass windows depicting ancient sacred rites.
Inside, the air was cool and thick with incense.
Priest paused their duties to watch me.
Acolytes whispered.
Even the nobles gathered in private alcoves fell into silence as I passed.
At an altar stood Pope Lucian—the old man who once raised Empress Aveline like a daughter.
His robes were simple for a man of his rank, and though age bowed his shoulders, his presence filled the hall more completely than any ruler ever could.
"Miss Chloe," he said softly. "Come closer."
I approached and bowed. "Your Holiness."
"Raise your head," he murmured.
I did.
And the warmth in his eyes undid me.
"It has been a year since we lost Empress Aveline," he said. "A year of uncertainty...yet the people tell me you have provided them comfort."
"I only did what was necessary," I said.
He smiled faintly. "You speak like her."
My breath caught.
"Her letters were brimming with affection for you." His voice lowered. "To her, you were a miracle, and the brightest part of her days."
The words hit me harder now than they ever had.
"I failed to protect her," he whispered, grief threading through the cracks in his voice. "Somehow, I see remnants of her heart in you."
I lowered my gaze. "She was very dear to me."
He exhaled shakily. "And you were dear to her."
Silence swelled between us—soft, fragile.
Then he straightened with effort.
"Miss Chloe," he said, with the gravity of someone about to shift the empire's course, "the people look to you."
He gestured toward the windows. Outside, we could faintly hear cheers, prayers, and chanting.
"They speak your name," he continued. "They demand we acknowledge what they already believe."
A priest stepped forward, carrying a white mantle embroidered with silver lilies.
The mantle of the Saintess.
Pope Lucian held it with reverent hands.
"It is my belief that in this empire, the voice of the people holds as much weight as the voice of the crown and as much weight as I, the Pope."
In the empire of Astrael, the soul is governed by the Pope just as firmly as the soil is ruled by the Imperial Throne.
Neither bows their head lower than the other.
"Child," he said softly, "will you accept this grace? Will you become our Saintess, and teach this empire how to walk a path of mercy once again?"
My heart tightened.
In another life, I had worn that mantle.
In another life, it had not saved Max
But this mantle was a key.
A means.
A shield.
A promise.
"Yes," I said, lowering to my knees. "I accept my calling, vowing to offer my life for this empire, and my soul for its people."
The mantle rested upon my shoulders.
Warm.
Heavy.
Sacred.
"Rise," Pope Lucian whispered.
"Saintess Chloe."
...
The Basilica doors opened.
The roar of the crowd struck like a wave.
"Saintess!"
"Miss Chloe!"
"Bless us!"
"Guide us!"
"Hope! Hope!"
Hundreds—maybe thousands—filled the plaza.
Mother's lifted infants.
Old men knelt.
Children reached trembling hands toward me.
I walked down the stone steps, blessing each hand I touched.
Their hope was palpable.
Warm and terrifying.
Because they believed I could save them.
And I might.
Not for glory.
Not for reverence.
But for the one person whose future depended on it.
As I reached the bottom step, sunlight washing over me, I looked toward the distant palace spires.
And inside, my resolve hardened.
If fate will not grant me a kinder path, I will carve one out of my own remains.
