Ward 13 was a skeletal remains of a hospital. The walls were scorched black, and the floor was covered in a thick, grey carpet of ash. Felix’s flashlight beam cut through the darkness, illuminating rusted gurneys and melted IV bags that hung like stalactites from the ceiling.
He followed a trail in the soot—a heavy, dragging line that led toward the burnt-out operating theater. "Mr. Sterling?" he called out, his voice cracking.
Behind a charred, velvet curtain that once separated the observation gallery, he found him. The body of Mr. Sterling sat slumped in a rusted chair, his skin pale and waxen against the black backdrop.
"Thank God," Felix exhaled, reaching for the billionaire’s arm to begin the process of moving him.
Suddenly, the air turned ice-cold, the temperature dropping so sharply that Felix’s breath came out in a thick cloud. A shimmering, translucent figure materialized between Felix and the body. It was a woman in a tattered lab coat, her face half-hidden by spectral burns.
"You cannot take him," the ghost whispered, her voice sounding like dry leaves skittering on pavement.
"Who are you?" Felix stammered, stumbling back.
"I am Dr. Elena," she replied, her eyes burning with a hollow, blue light. "I, and four other innocent spirits, are trapped in this soot. We have been thirsty for justice for twenty years."
"I just need the body," Felix pleaded. "I’ll lose everything."
"You will bring the killer here," Elena demanded, her form flickering with rage. "The son of the dead man—Julian Sterling. He is the one who intentionally set the fire twenty years ago to hide his own crimes. He must face us in the very place he committed his sin. Only after our revenge is complete will I allow the body to be returned to the morgue."
Elena’s figure expanded, her spectral scream shaking the remaining glass in the theater. Felix realized he was caught between a ghost's vengeance and a billionaire's power. He had less than twenty hours left, and the only way to save his future was to lure a murderer into the dark.
