Silver Vow

Silver Vow

Intro

I was born unlucky.

That’s the only truth I’ve ever known. My mother died the day I opened my eyes. My father followed her when I was three, leaving me with nothing but silence. A stranger dropped me at an orphanage, and fate handed me to a family that treated me like a slave.

I ran. I ran until my lungs burned, until the chains of that house broke behind me.

That’s when I met Uncle Kenji—my father’s old friend. He wasn’t rich, just a man with a food stall and two daughters, but he gave me something I’d never had before: family. Every night at dinner, I made the same promise:

“One day, I’ll become a great man. I’ll have the power to make sure none of you suffer again.”

I believed it. I had to.

And then, for the first time, life gave me more. I fell in love—not with beauty, but with kindness, innocence, and a heart so pure it terrified me. Her name was Miyu. She accepted me. She smiled at me. For once, I thought maybe my curse had ended.

But fate doesn’t forgive.

The truck came on a cheerful day, when I was finally happy. Metal, light, silence. My body broke, and as the world faded, I thought:

“Everything was going too smoothly for me, I guess. Was my life just a joke? After all the pain, after finding love, after finding family… it ends here?”

Darkness swallowed me.

But when I opened my eyes again, I wasn’t in the city. I was in a river glowing under the moonlight. My hair—once deep blue—was silver-white, shining like starlight.

And standing above me was a girl with soft pink hair, amber eyes, and a voice that felt like home.

“You’re safe now,” she whispered.

Safe.

For the first time in my life, I didn’t know if I believed it.

The river carried me gently, its current soft against my skin, as if the world itself was cradling me. I lifted my hand, trembling, watching the silver strands of my hair shimmer in the moonlight. It didn’t feel real. It didn’t feel like me.

The girl knelt beside me, her presence calm yet unearthly. “You’ve crossed over,” she said softly. “This world has chosen you.”

Her words echoed in my chest, heavy and strange. I thought of Kenji’s laughter, Miyu’s smile, the warmth of dinners I swore I’d protect. My vow burned inside me, refusing to die even as everything else had.

I wasn’t sure if this was a blessing or another cruel joke. But as the moonlight wrapped around me, I realized one thing: my story wasn’t over.

Safe.

For the first time in my life, I didn’t know if I believed it.

The river’s glow wrapped around me, soft and endless, as if fate itself had shifted. My silver hair shimmered like starlight, and the girl’s amber eyes held a warmth I couldn’t escape. Somewhere deep inside, my vow still burned, refusing to die.
