The Abduction

Chapter 1: The Night It All Changed

Summer Pauline’s steps echoed softly against the wet cobblestones, each tap drowned occasionally by the distant rumble of a storm. The streets of the city were empty tonight, abandoned by all but the wind, and a sense of unease crept into her chest. She hugged her coat tighter around herself, trying to shake it off. Just your imagination, she told herself, though every instinct screamed otherwise.

A shadow moved in the corner of her vision. At first, she thought it was nothing—just the night playing tricks—but then it shifted too quickly, too deliberately. Her stomach twisted.

Before she could react, a heavy hand clamped over her mouth, cutting off her scream. Another arm wrapped around her torso, lifting her off the ground with terrifying strength. She kicked and thrashed, but the grip was unyielding, practiced, terrifying.

“Let go of me! Help!” she tried to shout, but only muffled sounds escaped. Her nails scratched at leather, at bone, at anything that might release her. The shadow didn’t loosen.

“You’re coming with me,” a voice said — low, calm, chilling. Summer recognized the sharpness of it, a precision that made her shiver.

The world tilted as she was shoved into the back of a car. The door slammed shut, and instantly she was surrounded by darkness, the smell of leather and cold metal filling her nose. Panic made her chest ache; she pounded on the walls, testing doors and handles, but nothing budged. The engine rumbled, and the car moved forward, carrying her farther from everything she knew, everything familiar.

Her mind raced. Why me? Who is this? What do they want? Tears blurred her vision as the shadows pressed closer, and her body shook uncontrollably.

A faint movement in the front seat caught her eye. Alexei Volken. He was calm, impossibly calm, as if he had done this countless times. His eyes were fixed on the road, but the quiet authority in his presence pressed down on her like a physical weight. Summer’s fear skyrocketed.

“Please… please, I don’t know anything. Let me go!” she begged, her voice trembling even behind her muffled cries.

He didn’t answer. He didn’t need to. His silence alone was enough to terrify her.

Hours—or maybe minutes, she couldn’t tell—passed. The car eventually stopped, and she was yanked out into the cold air. The world spun. Rain drenched her hair and ran down her face, but she hardly noticed. Panic clawed at her throat.

“You’ll stay here,” Alexei said, his voice cold, deliberate. “Until I decide otherwise.”

She turned to look at her surroundings. They were in a secluded estate, its iron gates looming like sentinels, the mansion beyond tall and forbidding. The door opened, and she was pulled inside. The interior was dark, almost cavernous, smelling faintly of wood and something metallic. She tried to scream, but the echo of her voice only made the silence feel heavier.

And then, just like that, the door closed. Locking her in.

Summer sank to the floor, trembling. She hugged her knees to her chest, rocking slightly as the adrenaline left her and the full weight of reality hit. Alexei Volken, the man who had abducted her, was somewhere in that house. Calm, composed, watching. Waiting.

She didn’t know what he wanted, what his endgame was, or if she would ever see the outside world again. All she knew was that fear had taken root deep inside her.

The storm raged outside, but it could not compare to the tempest building within Summer — the terror, the disbelief, the helplessness. And in the shadows, Alexei Volken moved silently, a predator surveying his captive.
