Operation 3: ‘I’m the nanny?’

Mr. Bradson looked at me with an unbothered look plastered on his face.  He does not seem to see the urgency of this situation to me.

'That's right,' he said calmly.  'You are the nanny.'

I stared at him with a baffled look plastered on my face.  'It's just I... don't really have any experience when taking care of kids.  I do not like them either.'  I look at him, waiting for him to respond but he does not.

'Didn't the target want a qualified nanny to look after his children?' I ask, attempting to get myself out of this situation.

'He did indeed.'  Mr. Bradson started to fiddle with his pen.  'That's why we are going to train you.'

'Train me?' I immediately reply, instinctively trying to dismiss the idea.

He nodded apathetically.  Was he serious right now?  I could be doing something far more worthwhile but no... I am stuck training to be a nanny.

I finally spoke up after a short moment of silence, choosing my words carefully.  'Sir, you do realise that I could be going on an actual mission.  It's not exactly ideal to keep me locked up in here to learn how to babysit some children.'

I glanced behind him to see a bird fly past the skyscraper window before I turned back to him.  'I don't think—'

'You are doing this whether you like it or not, Red,' interrupted Mr. Bradson.  He had a very commanding tone as he spoke.  I knew I could not negotiate anymore.

Mr. Bradson continued, 'Your training starts tomorrow.'  He set his pen down on the desk to press his hands together.  'You are dismissed, Red.'

I stared at him in disbelief before finally turning around and walking towards the door.  I brought the file with me so that I could learn more about the target.

'Jaden Reed?' Kirsty exclaimed excitedly.

'Uh huh.'  Me and Kirsty both turned around a corner.  For some reason, she wanted to walk me to the training room.

'He's the most top-earning CEO in the world!'  Kirsty seemed so excited about the topic that she was practically vibrating.  If only she could go on the mission instead of me.

She smirked and said, 'He's also hot too.'

I sighed, clearly over the fact that he's hot.  'I mean, he's not that hot.  He looks like every other guy.'

Kirsty gasped in offence as soon as those words left my mouth.  'How could you even say that?  He is practically a model!'

'Doesn't mean I have to find him hot.'  I pushed open a glass door, hoping Kirsty would stop following me but she did not.

'I don't think I've ever heard someone say he's not hot.'  Kirsty paused before adding, 'Even Ezra thinks he is.'

I tried not to smile but I could feel the corners of my mouth twitching upwards. 'What? You're telling me know-it-all Ezra has a crush on Jaden?'

'Not a crush but he said he's attractive,' clarified Kirsty.

I rolled my eyes. 'Anyway, your point is?'  Before Kirsty could answer, I started to walk faster to try and escape her.  I found her really annoying.

Kirsty stepped in front of me to prevent me from continuing to walk down the hall. 'My point is that you could get with him.'

'No way,' I immediately dismissed, trying to move past Kirsty. She mimicked every step I took.

'You need to hear me out,' desperately said Kirsty. I opened my mouth to say something but she cut me off  by quickly saying, 'Just think about it. He's hot, you're hot. He's single, you're single. It's fate.'

'I don't believe in fate.' I tried to walk past her again but she stopped me. I groaned loudly when she did.  'Seriously?'

'Just think about it!' Kirsty held her hands up in front of my body.  Her hands hovered just above my chest, making sure not to touch it.

I sighed in frustration, 'You don't get it, Kirsty. His wife is dead and I highly doubt he is the type of man to fall in love with his children's nanny.'

Kirsty shrugged, 'You never know.'

I sighed and started to stare at Kirsty with an emotionless look on my face.  I took a step forward, looking her dead in the eye.  Kirsty lowered her hands and started to look scared.  I already knew how scary I looked when I was mad or frustrated.

I took another slow step forward, my face now inches away from Kirsty's.  My eyes were dead, showing no hint of my true emotions.  Because of my job as an assassin, I had learnt how to hide my true emotions successfully — even in my eyes.

'End of discussion, Kirsty,' I said in a deadly calm voice, my breath ghosting over her face I was standing that close to her.  'If you ever mention me getting together with him again, there will be consequences.'

I then walked past Kirsty, purposely hitting her shoulder with mine as I did.  I continued to walk down the hall, not looking back at Kirsty once.

Kirsty stood still as she watched me walk away in stunned silence.  After a long moment, I started to hear her shoes tapping against the hard floor.  She was not walking towards me, though.  She was walking in the opposite direction.

Kirsty's footsteps slowly started to fade into the distance.  Eventually, I could not hear them anymore.

With a slam of the glass door, her footsteps finally stopped their echo.  I smiled in relief and opened the glass door in front of me and turned a left to walk down a new hall.

I had no idea how long the journey to the training rooms would be as I had never been there before.  When I first joined the agency, I had already been trained by my grandpa.

Bang!

I started to hear gunshots coming from in front of me.  I must have been close to the training rooms.  All the new recruits would be training there.

I finally opened the last glass door and entered the chaos.  I never knew what chaotic was until I walked into the multiple training rooms.  I already knew I would hate it here.
