The week passed in a blur, yet every day seemed to circle back to Adrian Voss. No matter where Lara went—classrooms, the library, even the cafeteria—there was always the lingering thought of him, a shadow she couldn’t shake. Her carefully ordered life felt like it was tipping into chaos, and she hated that it excited her as much as it terrified her.
Thursday morning arrived with a crisp chill, the kind that made scarves and jackets mandatory. Lara adjusted her coat as she walked across the quad, her backpack heavy with textbooks, notes, and a lingering sense of anticipation she couldn’t explain. Her friends waved her over to a table near the benches, chatting animatedly about their midterms, but Lara’s mind drifted, scanning the crowd with a strange compulsion.
And there he was.
Adrian Voss, leaning against the side of the science building, hooded jacket pulled over his head, looking impossibly cool even in the early morning sun. He was speaking to a group of friends, but his gaze found hers instantly. That smirk—the one that made her stomach twist and her pulse spike—curled across his lips.
Lara sighed. No matter how many times she told herself to ignore him, she couldn’t. She tried to focus on her friends, trying to laugh along with them, but every word felt distant, every gesture hollow. Adrian was a gravitational force she couldn’t resist.
By the time class started, she barely remembered the lecture. She scribbled notes mechanically, her mind replaying every glance, every word exchanged over coffee. She hated that he had gotten under her skin.
After class, she decided to stop at the café again, hoping a cup of warmth and maybe some quiet might help her regain composure. But the universe seemed determined to deny her normalcy. Adrian Voss was already there, seated at a small table near the window, laptop open, but his focus wasn’t on work. His eyes, dark and calculating, tracked her entry like a predator observing prey.
She froze briefly at the door, trying to remind herself that she could walk past him, that she could ignore the magnetic pull she felt every time he was near.
But instinct betrayed her.
She moved forward, ordering coffee before he could say a word, then found herself sitting across from him again, the space between them filled with an unspoken tension that made her heart pound.
“Back so soon?” he asked casually, though his eyes were anything but casual.
“I needed…coffee,” she replied, tone carefully neutral.
He smirked, leaning back in his chair. “You’ve got that look,” he said, his voice teasing yet deliberate. “Like you’re thinking about something you’re not supposed to.”
Lara narrowed her eyes. “And what makes you think that?”
“Experience,” he said simply, eyes glinting. “I can read people.”
She wanted to roll her eyes, to scoff at his arrogance, but the truth gnawed at her. He could read her. He saw through her composed exterior and into the storm of curiosity, frustration, and intrigue roiling beneath.
“Maybe you just enjoy making assumptions,” she muttered, taking a cautious sip of her coffee.
“Maybe,” he said, leaning forward slightly, elbows on the table. “But sometimes, assumptions are right.”
The pause that followed was electric. Lara felt her pulse spike, her mind spinning with the weight of unspoken words. Something about Adrian Voss made her feel raw, exposed, and alive, all at once.
“Why do you…do this?” she asked finally, voice low. “Come into my life, unannounced, and make everything feel…different?”
Adrian leaned back, studying her, expression unreadable.
“Because,” he said slowly, carefully, “life’s boring when everything is predictable. You’ve got potential, Monroe.
You’re capable of more than you realize. Maybe I just like seeing if you’ll actually rise to the challenge.”
Her chest tightened. She didn’t know whether to be angry or flattered. “Rise to the challenge?” she repeated.
“Yeah,” he said simply, eyes dark and compelling. “Life isn’t a straight line. It’s messy. Complicated. Unpredictable. You either embrace it, or you let it control you. I’d rather watch you embrace it."
She wanted to argue, to tell him she didn’t need anyone to push her, that she could navigate her own life without his chaos.
But the words wouldn’t come. His gaze held her in place, magnetic and unyielding, and she realized that a part of her wanted exactly what he was offering: unpredictability, challenge, something that would shake her out of her carefully controlled existence.
The bell for her next class rang, and she reluctantly rose, leaving her coffee half-finished.
Adrian followed her to the door, walking alongside her, not too close but never leaving her peripheral vision.
“You’re going to get yourself in trouble,” he said, voice low, teasing. “Curiosity like yours can be dangerous.”
“Maybe I like danger,” she said, surprised at how naturally the words left her mouth.
He looked at her then, really looked, eyes dark with intensity, lips curving into a slow, knowing smile. “I had a feeling,” he said.
As they reached the hallway, she realized something profound: Adrian Voss had a way of making her question everything—her rules, her boundaries, her life. He was a storm, chaotic and unpredictable, and somehow, she was already caught in it.
By the time she entered class, Lara’s chest still hummed with anticipation. The memory of his gaze lingered, and a strange thrill coursed through her veins.
