Between Parallel Lines
Chapter 1
A Glance That Meant Nothing and Everything.
Minjing looked through the classroom window as a warm breeze brushed against her face. It felt like the last breath of a long winter - soft, almost hopeful. The trees outside swayed lazily, sunlight slipping between their branches like something fragile.
For a moment, she let herself drift.
In her head, she was somewhere quieter. Somewhere she wasn't behind on assignments. Somewhere teachers didn't sigh before saying her name.
"Minjing!"
The sharpness of her teacher's voice snapped through the air.She straightened immediately.
"Stop daydreaming and focus. You're already behind in every subject."
A few students near the back snickered. Not loudly - just enough. The kind of laughter that sticks to your skin.
Heat rushed to her cheeks. She lowered her head, pretending the faint scratches and ink stains on her wooden desk were suddenly fascinating. Her body remained in the chair, stiff and obedient, but her thoughts floated somewhere far beyond the classroom walls.
Numbers blurred on the board. Words blended together. The ticking clock felt louder than it should have.
"And don't forget the homework," the teacher added as the bell finally rang.Relief exploded through the room.
Chairs scraped against the floor. Bags zipped open and shut. Conversations burst out all at once, filling the air with noise and movement.
Minjing packed her books slowly, as if delaying something she couldn't name.
"Let's go to the new gaming café across the street," Hanmi said, appearing beside her and slinging an arm casually over her shoulder. "I heard their snacks are amazing."
Minjing forced a small smile and checked her purse discreetly. A few folded bills. Enough, probably - if she didn't order much.
"Yeah... I think I have enough."
They stepped into the corridor, immediately swallowed by the crowd. Students pushed past each other, voices bouncing off lockers and tiled floors. Someone shou , omeone laughed too loudly. The air felt warn und restless. And then - in the middle of all that noise something shifted.
It wasn't dramatic.
Just a pause. A flicker.
Her eyes met someone else's.
A tall boy stood a short distance away, long black hair swept back neatly as if even the wind avoided disturbing it. He was speaking to a girl beside him, nodding slightly at something she said.
But his gaze wasn't on her.
It was on Minjing.
The moment lasted barely a second.
Her stomach tightened anyway.
She looked away first.Seo Joon.
Her sister's classmate. Two years older. The kind of name people said with a tone - not admiration exactly, but awareness. He was known. Talked about. The kind of boy who never walked alone for long.
Hanmi leaned closer and lowered her voice. "Isn't that Seo Joon?"
Minjing kept her eyes forward. "Yeah."
"I heard he's kind of a playboy."
Minjing nodded slightly. She had heard the same. Stories drifted easily through hallways - whispered between lockers, traded over lunch tables. Girls laughing too brightly. Girls pretending not to care. He was charming. Carefree. Untouchable.
Untouchable mostly because he belonged to a different world.Different section. Different background. Different expectations.
There were invisible lines in school. Everyone knew where they stood.
She hesitated for a second, then smirked faintly. "Still... I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't date him if I had the chance."
Hanmi laughed. "As if we even have a chance."
Minjing didn't answer.
Because something about that glance didn't feel like nothing.
It wasn't soft. It wasn't teasing.
It was steady.
As if he had been looking at her long before she realized.
They kept walking, swallowed by the stairwellcrowd. But for the first time that day, her mind wasn't wandering anymore.
It wasn't drifting toward imagined futures or unfinished homework.
It was fixed.
On a pair of eyes that had followed her through noise, through distance, through the invisible walls she had always believed were solid.
And for reasons she couldn't explain, that frightened her more than it thrilled her.
Because glances are harmless.
Until they aren't.
