The night was quiet now, the mist still curling through the trees like smoke. Elara sat a few paces from Kael, her chest heaving, hands trembling from what she had just witnessed. The wolf before her — massive, terrifying, and impossibly beautiful — had revealed more than strength; it had revealed a soul, aching with centuries of pain and solitude. She did not move, though every instinct screamed caution. She could feel him watching her, the silver eyes glowing faintly, searching for understanding.
“I was once human,” Kael said finally, voice low and raspy, carrying a weight she could almost touch. The sound was not a growl now, but something older, something that carried the memory of love and betrayal. “Centuries ago, I was like you, fragile and fleeting. I loved, I hoped, I dared… and I was cursed for it. For choosing love over loyalty, for defying those who held power over life and death, they made me this… this form, this existence.”
Elara’s eyes widened as the truth sank in. He had lived through ages, watched the world change while he remained unchanged. She could feel the weight of his grief pressing down, like a storm in the forest. “Cursed?” she whispered. “You mean… this… you?” She gestured to his wolf form, body enormous, fur glinting silver in the moonlight.
Kael nodded slowly, eyes fixed on the forest floor. “I am bound to the moon,” he said. “Immortal under its light, hunted and feared by those who do not understand. Everything I love dies. Every friend, every bond, every flicker of joy — it is taken from me. I should not have allowed you to come this close.” His words trembled, and for the first time, Elara noticed the weight of despair in his posture, the way centuries of loneliness had carved themselves into every line of his being.
“I don’t care,” she said firmly, stepping closer, ignoring the cold that ran down her spine. “I don’t care about the danger, the curse, or the pain. I will stay with you. I will see this… everything… with you.”
Kael lifted his massive head, silver eyes piercing hers with a mixture of awe and sorrow. “You do not understand,” he whispered, voice cracking. “Love for me is destruction. You could be consumed by it, swallowed by the darkness that follows me wherever I go. I should push you away, for your own safety.”
Her heart ached at his words, and yet she did not step back. “Then let me face it,” she said. “I choose you, Kael. Curse or not. Wolf or man. I choose you.”
For a moment, he was silent, silver eyes reflecting the moonlight and the forest around them. The howl echoed faintly in the distance, mournful and lonely. Kael’s ears twitched, body tense, but he did not move away. Instead, he lowered his head slightly, almost as if acknowledging her courage, her devotion, her reckless, impossible love.
The forest held its breath around them. Elara felt it in her chest — the pull of something older than time, the thread that connected her to him, unbroken by centuries, unbroken by curse, unbroken by fear. Kael was not just a wolf. He was a man trapped in sorrow, a soul longing for warmth, a being who had loved and lost beyond imagining.
And in that moment, she knew — no matter the danger, no matter the cost, no matter the darkness ahead — her heart had chosen him completely.
