The Secret Between Worlds

The Secret Between Worlds

The door that shouldn't exist

Rain drummed relentlessly against the tall, dusty windows of the school library. The smell of wet stone and old books mixed with the faint scent of pencils and ink. Lina dashed between the shelves, chasing her runaway notebook as the wind howled outside, rattling the glass. She cursed under her breath. “Why does it always fly away when I’m late?”

The shelves seemed taller than usual tonight, casting long, twisted shadows across the floor. That’s when she saw it: a narrow door wedged between two towering bookcases. It was almost camouflaged in the dim light, but something about it made her stop dead in her tracks. She was certain she’d walked this aisle countless times. There hadn’t been a door here before.

Curiosity gnawed at her. Her fingers hovered over the smooth, dark wood. A faint golden light seeped from the edges, flickering like a candle in the storm. And then she heard it—a soft, urgent whisper, almost like someone speaking directly into her mind: “You shouldn’t be here…”

Lina spun around. Nothing. Only the smell of old paper and the rhythmic pounding of rain. Her heartbeat thumped painfully in her chest. She glanced over her shoulder; the library was empty except for her. Normally, she would have walked away, chalking it up to imagination. But tonight, something about the door pulled at her, something she couldn’t explain.

Taking a deep breath, she reached for the knob. Her hand trembled as her fingers brushed the metal. It was warm—almost alive. The golden light pulsed faintly beneath her touch. “Okay… just a quick look,” she whispered to herself. Her other hand gripped her notebook like a talisman.

The door creaked open with an eerie slowness. Beyond it, a spiral staircase descended into darkness, but the darkness wasn’t empty—it shimmered faintly with golden light, like the air itself was alive. Lina’s heart raced. “Is this real?” she asked aloud. Her voice sounded small and fragile in the vast library.

Her curiosity, stronger than fear, won. She stepped forward. The moment her foot crossed the threshold, the ordinary world seemed to fall away. The muffled sound of rain and the library’s musty smell faded. She felt a strange pressure in her chest, like stepping underwater, and then a sudden lightness, as though gravity itself had shifted.

The staircase twisted downwards, glowing faintly, each step bathed in warm golden light. Lina’s eyes widened as she descended. Her mind raced with questions: What is this place? Who made it? Why does it feel… alive? Every instinct told her to run back, to close the door and forget she’d seen it, but another force urged her forward. She felt drawn, inexplicably, toward whatever waited below.

At the bottom, the staircase opened into a clearing bathed in ethereal light. The walls of the tunnel disappeared into mist, and in the center, a figure waited. Tall, cloaked, with eyes that glimmered faintly like molten gold. He was impossibly still, his presence commanding, yet calm. Lina froze.

“You… you came,” the figure said, his voice low but carrying weight. It was a sound she didn’t recognize but somehow knew she could trust—or fear.

“I… I don’t even know where ‘here’ is,” Lina stammered, every word trembling. Her notebook fell from her hands, landing with a soft thump on the glowing ground. She bent to pick it up, but the figure raised a hand, halting her.

“Then you’re already in trouble,” he said.

Lina blinked. “Trouble?” Her voice wavered. “I… I didn’t even choose to be here!”

He tilted his head slightly, as if considering her words carefully. “No one chooses to step through doors like this. They find you. And you have been… found.” His gaze lingered on her, sharp but not unkind. “You have power. More than you realize.”

“My… power?” Lina asked, confusion and fear rising in her chest. “I’m just… me. I’m ordinary.”

“Ordinary?” His tone sharpened slightly, though it was tempered with curiosity. “You touched this world. You reacted when danger appeared. That is not ordinary.”

She took a small step back. “Danger? What danger?”

The figure gestured to the shadows around the clearing. “This place is alive. It tests those who enter. It watches. You have already drawn attention.”

Lina’s chest tightened. “Attention from… what?”

From the mist, a faint sound stirred—like whispers carried on the wind. She couldn’t understand the words, but the tone was unmistakably… menacing. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end.

“Do you… guard this place?” she asked, trying to steady her voice.

He shook his head slowly. “I am not its master. I am… a guide. And perhaps, a protector—for now. But your choices from this moment forward will determine whether you survive.”

Lina swallowed hard. “Survive? I… I don’t even know what I’m doing here!”

“Then pay attention. Listen. Move carefully.” His eyes softened, just slightly. “I can show you the way, but the first step is yours.”

For a long moment, Lina just stared at him. The golden light of the clearing reflected in her wide eyes. Everything she had known—school, friends, her quiet, predictable life—felt like a distant memory. Stepping through this door had pulled her into a world she didn’t understand.

Yet, beneath the fear, a spark of excitement stirred. Something about this place called to her. She could feel it in the air, the warmth in her chest, the pulse of magic that seemed to hum just beneath her skin.

Finally, she nodded, small but determined. “Okay… I’ll try.”

The cloaked figure extended his hand. Lina hesitated, then took it. The moment their hands touched, a wave of warmth—and something unexplainable—rushed through her.

“Good,” he said. “Then let’s begin. The world you’ve entered… it is not what it seems. And neither are you.”

Lina took a deep breath, gripping her notebook tightly. Behind her, the golden light of the library staircase faded. Ahead, the unknown awaited.

And in that instant, Lina realized she had no choice but to follow the path, wherever it might lead.
