The sky above Scott Valley Junior High had long turned dark.
Streetlights buzzed softly as evening settled over the quiet roads of the small town.
Jacoby Morrison walked down the sidewalk with his hands tucked inside the sleeves of his oversized black hoodie. His boots lightly tapped against the pavement as he hummed to himself.
The date with Matthew had gone surprisingly well.
No bullying.
No Taco Bell disasters.
No teachers getting exposed on TikTok.
Just… normal.
Jacoby smiled slightly.
“…today was actually nice.”
He kicked a pebble down the road while scrolling through his phone.
His TikTok notifications were still going crazy from the bathroom video, but he ignored them.
Right now he had somewhere more important to go.
Matthew had invited him over to his house.
Jacoby’s cheeks turned pink just thinking about it.
“Okay,” he muttered to himself. “Act normal.”
He immediately tripped on a crack in the sidewalk.
“…never mind.”
Jacoby sighed and kept walking.
That’s when he noticed something strange.
Up ahead, near the edge of a small open field, the grass looked… burnt.
He tilted his head.
“…what?”
Curiosity immediately took over.
Jacoby stepped off the sidewalk and walked toward the field.
The ground grew darker as he approached.
Grass was flattened.
Dirt had been kicked up like something heavy had crashed there.
Then he saw it.
A small crater in the center of the field.
Jacoby blinked.
“…did a meteor hit here?”
He slowly stepped closer, crouching down near the crater.
Inside it sat a strange glowing object.
A small stone that shimmered faintly with soft blue light.
Jacoby leaned closer.
“…that’s definitely not normal.”
The glowing rock suddenly cracked.
Jacoby jumped back slightly.
A tiny wisp of blue energy floated out of the stone like smoke made of light.
Jacoby stared.
“…oh cool.”
The wisp slowly floated in front of him.
It drifted through the air like a curious little spirit.
Jacoby raised an eyebrow.
“Are you… alive?”
The wisp suddenly shot forward.
WHOOSH
Before Jacoby could react—
It lunged straight into his chest.
Jacoby gasped.
For a split second he felt something warm rush through his body.
A flash of light filled his vision.
A distant voice echoed faintly in his mind, like a whisper carried on wind.
Then—
Everything stopped.
Jacoby blinked.
“…huh?”
He looked around the empty field.
The crater was still there.
But the glowing rock was gone.
Jacoby scratched his head.
“…why did I walk over here again?”
He shrugged.
“Whatever.”
Completely forgetting what had just happened, Jacoby turned and walked back toward the road.
His phone buzzed.
A message from Matthew appeared.
Matthew:
Did you get lost already?
Jacoby smiled.
Jacoby:
Maybe.
He slipped his phone into his pocket and continued toward Matthew’s house.
Behind him, the small crater slowly faded as the wind blew dust over it.
But something inside Jacoby had changed.
He just didn’t know it yet.
⸻
Meanwhile…
Across town, inside a quiet neighborhood street, Matthew stood in his backyard looking confused.
Minutes earlier he had noticed something strange fall from the sky as well.
A small glowing stone had landed near the fence.
Matthew had walked over to investigate.
And just like Jacoby—
The stone had cracked open.
A wisp of red light had floated out.
Matthew had barely processed what he was seeing before the red energy suddenly rushed forward.
It struck him directly in the chest.
For a moment his body had filled with heat like sunlight.
A voice echoed faintly in his mind.
Then—
Nothing.
Matthew blinked and looked around the yard.
“…why did I come outside?”
He scratched his head.
Then he heard footsteps approaching from the sidewalk.
Jacoby walked through the gate.
“Hey,” Jacoby said casually.
Matthew smiled.
“Oh hey.”
Neither of them realized it yet.
But the two glowing wisps had chosen their hosts.
One blue.
One red.
And deep within their bodies…
Ancient powers had begun to awaken.
