Chapter 5: The Forbidden Pact

The air in the living room was thick with the scent of ozone and the metallic tang of the rogue’s blood. I stood there, my breath coming in ragged gasps, staring at the lifeless body Alaric had just dropped as if it were nothing more than a broken toy. My hands were still tingling, the fading violet glow leaving behind a strange, hollow ache in my palms.

Alaric didn't move. He stood amidst the shattered glass of my coffee table, his dark coat swirling around his ankles like a shadow brought to life. He looked at me—not with the hunger of the rogue, but with something far more terrifying: a deep, ancient possessiveness that seemed to claim every inch of my soul.

"Who are you?" I repeated, my voice stronger now, fueled by the adrenaline still coursing through my veins. "And why did you do this to me?"

"I am Alaric Valerius," he began, his voice a low, velvet rumble that seemed to vibrate the very floorboards beneath my feet. "The last of the True Kings. For a thousand years, my kind has been cursed with barrenness. We were destined to fade into the whispers of history, a dying race of gods. Until I found you."

He took a slow, deliberate step toward me. I didn't back away. The fear was still there, but it was being eclipsed by a desperate need for answers.

"I didn't choose you by chance, Lyra Belov," he continued, his void-like eyes locking onto mine. "Your blood carries a resonance, a purity that hasn't been seen in centuries. You are the only vessel in this world capable of housing the Royal Seed. I marked you because I had to. Without my mark, without my blood in your veins, the sheer power of the twins would have torn your human body apart from the inside out within days."

I clutched my stomach, feeling the two tiny, powerful pulses within. "So, I’m just a... a container for your heirs?"

A flicker of something—was it regret? or perhaps a hidden warmth?—passed through his cold features. He reached out, his long, pale fingers hovering just inches from my cheek, yet he didn't touch me. It was as if he were afraid his coldness would shatter me.

"You are the mother of the future," he whispered. "But that title comes with a price. The rogue you saw tonight is just the beginning. The Council of Elders, the rival clans, even the humans who have tasted our secrets—they all want what you carry. They want the power to create a new generation of immortals. They will come for you with armies, Lyra. They will try to harvest your children like crops."

"Why didn't you stay? Why did you leave me alone for these past few weeks?" I demanded, my voice cracking with the weight of the isolation I had felt.

"I have been here every night," Alaric replied, his gaze intensifying. "I was erasing the traces of your scent, killing those who got too close. I stayed in the shadows to keep the heat of my enemies away from your door. But tonight... tonight changed everything. Your power has awakened. The violet light—the Royal Aura—has signaled your location to every supernatural creature within a hundred miles."

He finally closed the distance, his hand gently resting on my swollen abdomen. The moment his palm touched the fabric of my shirt, a jolt of pure energy surged through me. It wasn't painful; it was a homecoming. For the first time since this nightmare began, the hunger and the noise in my head went silent.

"We cannot stay here," Alaric said, his eyes turning a deep, glowing crimson. "The apartment is compromised. By dawn, this city will be a hunting ground. You must come with me to the Citadel of Shadows. It is the only place where you can give birth in safety."

I looked at my ruined home, then back at the man who had stolen my humanity but was now the only thing keeping me alive. I had no choice. For the twins, for myself, I had to step into the darkness with him.
