chapter 5 HIS TO BREAK MINE To BEAR

The castle was quiet. Too quiet, perhaps, after nights of fire and war. Smoke still curled from shattered walls, and the forest beyond remained shadowed and watchful, as if it knew the beast’s battles were never truly over.

But inside, for the first time in centuries, there was a fragile peace.

The woman sat on a low stone bench in the great hall, the child cradled gently in her arms. Even through the thin cloth of her dress, she could feel the faint stir of life—tiny, perfect, and unbearably precious.

The beast watched from the shadows, massive form hunched, amber eyes glowing softly in the torchlight. For once, he did not feel the need to hide, to roar, to strike. He simply observed.

“You… didn’t have to fight for me,” she said quietly, almost to herself, her gaze fixed on the child. “You could have left. You could have remained the beast the world feared.”

He stepped closer, each movement deliberate, careful not to startle her. “And let them take this?” He nodded toward the child. “Let them take you?” His voice was rough, low, dangerous, but softer now—closer to the man buried beneath the curse. “You think I could do that?”

She lifted her eyes to him. “You’ve always been so strong,” she said softly. “Stronger than anyone I’ve ever known. Stronger than the curse itself.”

The beast knelt before her, massive hands brushing the edges of the bench, careful not to touch her unless she allowed it. “Strength means nothing,” he said. “It never did. What matters… is what I protect. What I care for.”

Her fingers trembled slightly as she reached out to touch his face, tracing the line of his jaw, the rough curve of his fur. “And that… is me,” she whispered. “And the child.”

For a moment, silence stretched between them, heavy and intimate. He lowered his massive head until his forehead pressed against hers, amber eyes searching hers. “I am… yours,” he growled softly, the words rough and uneven, yet full of promise. “Yours to claim… and yours to bear.”

A shiver ran through her, not of fear, but of something more—something dangerous, tender, and electric. “And I am… yours,” she said, her voice steady, almost fierce. “Yours to break… if you choose. But also yours to trust.”

He paused at that, amber eyes flicking to hers, conflicted, fierce, and human all at once. “Trust is dangerous,” he muttered, but there was no warning growl this time. Only quiet acknowledgment.

“I know,” she said softly, letting her hand rest over his chest, feeling the rise and fall of muscle beneath fur, feeling the heartbeat of the beast that had once been a curse. “But some things are worth the risk.”

He leaned closer, nose brushing her hair, claws relaxed, breath warm against her cheek. “And the child?” he asked, voice almost a whisper.

“Safe,” she replied. “For now.”

He exhaled, a deep rumble that could have been a purr—or a sigh. “Then I will guard both of you,” he said. “Until the end of the world, if I must.”

The warmth between them thickened, fragile yet unbreakable. The battle was over, the curse’s immediate threat stilled, but their bond—dangerous, passionate, human and beast alike—had only begun.

For the first time in centuries, the beast allowed himself to kneel fully, bringing his massive form close to her, careful not to crush, careful only to be near. She leaned against him, hand still resting on the child, and let herself feel the weight of what they had survived… and what they had claimed together.

A faint smile touched her lips. “You’re mine,” she whispered, voice low, fierce, full of fire and promise.

“And you’re mine,” he replied, amber eyes softening just enough for her to see the man beneath the curse. “Yours to break… and to bear. Forever.”

Outside, the forest breathed, the night calm. Inside, two hearts—beast and woman—beat together in a quiet, fragile eternity. The war was over. The curse was still there, lurking, waiting—but they had something stronger. Something worth fighting for.

And in that moment, amidst the ruins and shadows, they were whole. The night was still, the ruins of the castle bathed in silver moonlight. Flames from the battle had long since died, leaving only faint smoke curling through broken windows and shattered stone.

The woman leaned against the beast’s massive chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her fingers. For centuries, he had lived alone, untouchable and feared. Yet here he was—alive, unbroken, and remarkably human in the quiet moments between chaos.

“You never speak of what you were before the curse,” she whispered. “Of who you were… or who you wanted to be.”

He tensed slightly but did not pull away. His amber eyes flickered with something almost lost—a trace of memory, a shadow of who he had been. “It doesn’t matter,” he muttered, voice low, rough. “The man I was… is dead.”

Her hand lingered on his chest, tracing faint lines beneath the fur. “Maybe,” she said softly. “But maybe he isn’t gone. Not entirely. I can see him… in the way you protect this child, in the way you care. In the way you look at me.”

He growled softly, a mix of frustration and something far more tender. “You give me far too much credit.”

“Perhaps,” she whispered. “Or perhaps you’re just not used to someone seeing you… truly.”

He pressed his forehead against hers, amber eyes narrowing as he considered her words. For centuries, no one had dared, no one had wanted, and certainly no one had carried hope into his darkness. She had—and in doing so, she had shattered walls he hadn’t known were still standing.

The child stirred within her, a small kick that made her gasp softly. The beast’s eyes followed, fierce and protective, almost feral in their intensity. “It is yours,” he said quietly, voice gruff, but there was no question of claim or ownership. Only care. Only devotion.

“I know,” she whispered, laying a hand over his. “And we’ll keep it safe… together.”

For a long moment, they simply remained like that—beast and woman, human and monster, bound by blood, promise, and something far older than fear. The ruins of the castle faded into shadows; outside, the forest whispered in the night.

Then, slowly, he lowered his massive form until his arms surrounded her and the child, careful, tender, almost painfully aware of the fragility of what they protected. She leaned into him, resting her head against his broad chest, and allowed herself to feel the warmth of life, of hope, and of something dangerous—something like love.

“You are mine,” she murmured, voice barely above the wind.

“And you are mine,” he replied, amber eyes closing for a fraction of a heartbeat. “Forever. Mine to protect… mine to bear.”

And for the first time in centuries, he allowed himself to hope.

Because the war was over. The curse still lingered, yes, but they had each other—and the life growing between them. That was enough. For now.

Outside, the forest waited, quiet, patient, as if acknowledging the bond formed within the walls of a ruined castle. Inside, two hearts beat together—steady, fierce, and unyielding.

The night stretched on, carrying with it the promise of survival, of love, and of a future they would face… together.
