THE VOW
— The Monster Who Didn’t Hide
The rain fell softly over the city.
Cold. Quiet. Indifferent.
From the rooftop of a thirty-story building, Darian Vossov watched the streets below.
Cars moved like ants.
People rushed through puddles with umbrellas and hurried lives.
Darian leaned against the railing, black coat fluttering in the wind.
Behind him, a man trembled.
“P-please…” the man whispered.
His voice shook like glass about to break.
“I didn’t mean to betray you.”
Darian didn’t turn.
Instead, he calmly asked,
“Tell me something.”
His voice was soft. Too calm.
“Do you know what fascinates me about humans?”
The man stayed silent.
Darian finally turned his head slightly, enough for the streetlight to reveal his eyes.
Cold. Observing.
“Humans always believe they will be the exception.”
He stepped closer.
Slow.
Measured.
The man backed away until his back hit the railing.
“I can fix this!” the man shouted.
“I can give you money! Information! Anything!”
Darian stopped only inches away.
Then he smiled faintly.
Not a warm smile.
A curious one.
“You misunderstand,” he said.
“This was never about punishment.”
A pause.
“It was about learning.”
The man’s eyes widened.
Darian placed a hand gently on his shoulder.
“Tonight,” he said calmly,
“you helped me confirm a theory.”
“What theory?”
Darian leaned closer and whispered,
“Fear reveals the truth of a person faster than love ever will.”
A moment later—
The man screamed as his body disappeared over the edge.
The city continued breathing below.
Unaware.
Darian stared into the darkness where the man had vanished.
No emotion crossed his face.
But inside his mind, a new thought had already begun forming.
A curiosity.
Because somewhere in this city…
There was someone different.
Someone who would not react with fear.
Someone whose mind he wanted to understand.
Someone who might change the rules of his carefully controlled world.
Her name was Elara Quinn.
And soon…
She would meet the monster.

...Chapter 1 — The Girl Who Studies Monsters...
...Elara Quinn loved questions....
...Especially the dangerous ones....
...Inside the university library, silence wrapped around rows of books like a sleeping animal....
...Stacks of psychology journals covered her desk....
...Titles about criminal behavior, moral philosophy, and human darkness filled the pages....
...Her friend Maya sat across from her, watching with confusion....
...“You know normal people read romance novels,” Maya said....
...Elara didn’t look up....
...“I do read romance.”...
...Maya raised an eyebrow....
...“You’re currently reading about serial killers.”...
...Elara flipped a page....
...“Love and violence come from the same emotional core.”...
...Maya blinked....
...“That is the most disturbing thing I’ve heard today.”...
...Elara finally smiled slightly....
...Her research topic was simple to explain but difficult to answer....
...Why do humans become monsters?...
...Was it trauma?...
...Environment?...
...Or something darker hidden inside everyone?...
...As she scanned another article, a strange pattern caught her attention....
...Three recent criminal cases....
...Different cities....
...Different victims....
...But the psychological manipulation behind each crime felt… identical....
...Too identical....
...Elara leaned forward....
...Her curiosity sharpened....
...Someone intelligent had designed these crimes....
...Not a random killer....
...A strategist....
...Someone studying people the way a chess player studies the board....
...She wrote a note in her notebook....
...“Possible controlling figure behind multiple cases.”...
...Maya peeked at the page....
...“You think there’s a mastermind?”...
...Elara shrugged....
...“I don’t know yet.”...
...Then she added quietly,...
...“But if there is…”...
...Her eyes glowed with curiosity....
...“I want to meet them.”...
...Across the city....
...Inside a dark office overlooking the skyline…...
...Darian Vossov slowly closed a file....
...Inside it was information about dozens of people....
...Politicians....
...Executives....
...Journalists....
...And one university student....
...Elara Quinn....
...He tapped the desk thoughtfully....
...Because for the first time in years…...
...Someone had noticed the pattern....
...And that meant something fascinating....
...Darian leaned back in his chair....
...A faint smile appearing on his face....
...“Interesting.”...
...The game had finally begun...
