Chapter 3: Echoes of Guilt

Night settled once again over Kyoto, Japan. The river flowed quietly, reflecting broken lights from the streets above.

Police sirens faded as Takeda arrived.

An officer waved him over. “Detective Takeda, over here.”

Takeda stepped closer. “Second victim?”

“Yes, sir.”

Takeda glanced at the covered body. “Same pattern?”

The officer nodded. “No struggle. No witnesses.”

Takeda exhaled slowly. “And the butterfly?”

Another officer handed him an evidence bag. “Found near the victim’s hand.”

Takeda stared at it. “Unfolded yet?”

“Not yet,” the officer replied.

Takeda looked at him sharply. “Send it to Nakamura. Carefully.”

“Yes, sir.”

---

At the lab—

Aiko looked up as Takeda entered.

“You’re fast,” she said.

“Second body,” Takeda replied.

Aiko’s expression hardened. “I guessed.”

Takeda placed the evidence on the table. “Let’s not waste time.”

Aiko carefully opened the bag. “You think it’s the same message?”

Takeda crossed his arms. “No. It won’t be that simple.”

Aiko gently unfolded the butterfly.

Silence.

Takeda stepped closer. “What does it say?”

Aiko’s eyes narrowed.

“Liar.”

Takeda didn’t blink. “First ‘Guilt’… now ‘Liar.’”

Aiko nodded. “These are not random words.”

Takeda paced slowly. “They’re accusations.”

“Or judgments,” Aiko added.

Takeda stopped. “Same thing.”

Aiko looked at him. “You think the victims are connected?”

Takeda replied immediately. “They already are.”

---

Later—

Inside the station, files were spread across the table.

Ren Ishikawa stood nearby, holding a notebook.

Takeda glanced at him. “You again.”

Ren gave a small smile. “News travels fast.”

Takeda’s tone was cold. “This isn’t a story.”

Ren stepped closer. “Two deaths in two days? It already is.”

Takeda ignored him. “Why are you here?”

Ren replied calmly, “Because I’ve seen this before.”

Takeda paused.

Aiko looked up. “What do you mean?”

Ren opened his notebook. “Five years ago. That same case.”

Takeda’s eyes narrowed. “The woman’s death.”

Ren nodded. “Yes.”

Takeda stepped closer. “Say what you know.”

Ren spoke quietly, “It wasn’t just one victim back then.”

Aiko frowned. “Explain.”

Ren continued, “There were four people involved.”

Takeda’s voice dropped. “Four…”

Ren nodded again. “The dead man from last night was one of them.”

Aiko whispered, “And the second victim?”

Ren looked at Takeda. “Also connected.”

Takeda clenched his jaw. “Then two are left.”

Ren didn’t reply immediately.

Takeda’s tone sharpened. “Who are they?”

Ren closed his notebook. “That’s what you need to find out, Detective.”

Takeda stepped closer. “Don’t play games.”

Ren met his eyes. “I’m not.”

Silence filled the room.

Aiko broke it. “If the killer is targeting all four…”

Takeda finished her sentence, “Then this isn’t over.”

Ren added softly, “It’s just beginning.”

---

Takeda grabbed his coat.

Aiko asked, “Where are you going?”

“To dig deeper,” Takeda replied.

Ren spoke from behind, “Be careful who you trust.”

Takeda stopped.

Then without turning, he said—

“I trust no one.”

---

As Takeda walked out into the night, his phone buzzed again.

He looked at the message.

Unknown Number.

He opened it.

A single line appeared—

“Two left.”

Takeda’s expression darkened.

“Then I’m running out of time,” he muttered.

Somewhere in the shadows of Kyoto…

The next butterfly was already waiting. 🦋
