POV – Annabel
After my last class, school was over, and I wanted to be outside the gate when I saw Lucas walking toward me.
“Hey, beautiful,” he said, but I ignored him. He chuckled.
The audacity of this guy, I said mentally.
“Hey Anny I don’t know why you are upset,What is the matter?” he asked.
I scoffed at him—how clueless he is, or pretending to be. “I can’t deal with you,” I said to him.
“See, tell me what the problem is, and I’m going to apologize,” he said.
I was about to respond when I saw Becky and Ella coming, and I sighed in relief.
“Hey, Anna,” Becky greeted.
“Um, can we go somewhere private?” he asked.
“The only person going anywhere with you is ‘bye bye,’ pretty boy,” Becky said. I’ve got to hate this kind of courage someday!
“Anyway, I don’t know why you are acting this way, but I hope to see you. Let’s talk at Amy’s Coffee Shop by 6pm. I’ll be waiting,” he said as he walked away, not without winking at me.
“You’re not going, are you?” Becky asked, scared.
I just shrugged. “Come on, girl, after what he did!”
“Okay, what’s going on? What was Lucas talking about—meeting you?” Ella asked.
“See, can’t you mind your business?” I said, annoyed.
“No, I can’t when it involves my friends. Why are you treating me like this?” she said with a pout.
I rolled my eyes at her.
“So, Anna and Lucas were on a date…” Becky started, but I stopped her from saying any other thing.
“Careful, Ella,” I said, but you guys stop doing that. Denying it?
“Then if you went out on a date with him and he was avoiding you throughout today in school, isn’t that enough for you to see that he does not like you?” Ella said.
“Ella, this is the reason we don’t tell you things,” Becky said with a sigh.
“What? I’m saying the truth. And watch and see—she’ll go and meet him because she loves him so much, she can’t see that he’s playing her.”
“Ella, that’s enough. That’s why I don’t tell you things,” I said angrily.
“Yeah, I know, ’cause you hate the truth and choose to be delusional,” Ella said with a shrug.
I looked at Becky, but she just frowned.
“You know what? I’ll get going,” I said as I went home.

I got home after 30 minutes of walking alone because I wanted to clear my head. I opened the door to see that Mom was cooking dinner. I guess like… doesn’t she have a job or anywhere to go? I said with a scoff.
She noticed me and smiled. “Welcome home. How was your day?”
“Afternoon, Mom,” I said as I walked past her to go upstairs.
She stopped me and held my face. “You look pale. Are you okay?” she asked.
“I’m good, Mom,” I said impatiently.
“Oh, I asked, how was your day in school?”
“Mom, please read the room. I’m not in the mood to talk about it,” I said.
“Did something happen?” she asked, concerned.
“Nothing that concerns you, Mom,” I said, and she sighed.
“I cooked your food. Once you get back hungry, do you want to taste it?” she asked.
“Mom, I’m not hungry. And don’t you have anywhere to go? Dress properly—you look bad,” I said as I walked upstairs to my room.
Geez, so controlling.
