Sleep didn’t come easy.
Shanyl lay awake, staring at the ceiling, Kent’s words echoing in her mind.
Your father wasn’t just in debt.
It didn’t make sense.
Nothing about this made sense.
Her father had always been distant, unreliable… but dangerous? Involved in something like this?
No.
She refused to believe it.
But doubt had already taken root.
And it wouldn’t go away.
The next morning, she didn’t wait to be called.
She found her way through the mansion halls on her own, her steps determined.
If Kent knew something…
She was going to get answers.
She found him in his office.
Of course.
Where else would a man like him be?
He stood by the window again, just like the first time she saw him—calm, controlled, untouchable.
“You’re up early,” he said without turning.
She crossed her arms.
“I don’t like being lied to.”
That got his attention.
He turned slowly.
“I didn’t lie,” he said.
“You just didn’t tell me everything,” she shot back.
His gaze sharpened.
“There’s a difference.”
“Not to me.”
The tension rose instantly.
Shanyl stepped closer.
“You said my father was involved,” she continued. “In what, exactly?”
Kent watched her carefully.
“Information like that isn’t free,” he said.
Her frustration flared.
“Are you serious right now?”
“You want answers,” he said. “Earn them.”
Her jaw tightened.
“I’m already here because of him. What more do you want from me?”
Silence.
Then—
“You.”
The word hung in the air.
Her breath caught.
“What does that mean?” she asked slowly.
Kent stepped closer.
Too close.
“It means,” he said quietly, “you stop questioning me… and start proving you can be trusted.”
Her heart pounded.
“And if I don’t?”
His gaze darkened.
“Then you stay in the dark.”
She stared at him.
Anger. Frustration. Confusion.
But beneath all of it…
Curiosity.
Dangerous curiosity.
“Fine,” she said finally. “What do I have to do?”
A faint smile appeared on his lips.
“That’s better.”
Hours later, Shanyl found herself in a completely different part of the mansion.
A restricted area.
Guards stood outside.
Watching.
Waiting.
“This is where you start,” Kent said.
Her stomach tightened.
“With what?”
He handed her a folder.
Inside were documents. Names. Transactions.
Things she didn’t fully understand.
“You’re smart,” he said. “Figure it out.”
She looked up at him.
“You want me to work for you?”
“I already told you,” he replied. “You’re part of this now.”
Her fingers tightened around the folder.
“And if I find something I don’t like?”
Kent’s expression didn’t change.
“Then you’ll learn how this world really works.”
As he turned to leave, Shanyl spoke again.
“Kent.”
He paused.
She hesitated for a second.
Then—
“Why me?”
The same question.
But this time, it felt different.
More personal.
More real.
Kent didn’t turn around.
For a moment, she thought he wouldn’t answer.
Then—
“Because you’re connected to something bigger than you realize.”
Her heart skipped.
“What does that mean?”
But he was already walking away.
Leaving her with more questions than answers.
And a truth she wasn’t ready to face.
As Shanyl looked down at the folder in her hands, one thing became clear.
She wasn’t just trapped in Kent’s world.
She was becoming part of it.
Whether she wanted to…
Or not.
