Episode 4: The Distance That Hurt

Life returned to the way Aanya had always preferred—structured, predictable, and quiet.

At least, that’s what it looked like on the outside.

Her mornings were filled with lectures and notes, her afternoons with assignments, and her evenings with the same familiar routine. Nothing unexpected happened anymore. No sudden meetings. No long walks filled with conversations that lingered long after they ended.

No Aarav.

At first, she told herself it was for the best. This was what she wanted, wasn’t it? No emotional risks, no uncertainty, no fear of losing something she cared about.

But as days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, something inside her began to shift.

The silence wasn’t peaceful anymore.

It was heavy.

She noticed it in small, quiet moments. When she walked past the café and instinctively looked toward the corner table by the window—only to find it empty. When she passed the bookstore and slowed down unconsciously, her eyes drifting toward the door, as if expecting it to open and reveal him standing there.

But it never did.

Even the rain felt different now.

One evening, as dark clouds gathered again, Aanya stood by her window, watching as the first drops fell. The sound used to comfort her once, wrapping around her like a gentle memory.

Now, it felt like a reminder.

Of him.

Of everything she had pushed away.

She closed her eyes, but it didn’t help. Memories came rushing back anyway—his smile, his voice, the way he listened as if every word she said mattered. The way he looked at her when he said those words—

“I think I’m falling for you.”

Her chest tightened.

“I can’t.”

The reply echoed louder now than it had that night.

She sank down onto her bed, her fingers gripping the edge of the blanket as if trying to hold herself together.

Why had she said that?

At the time, it felt like the safest choice. The logical one. Love was unpredictable, fragile, something that could break without warning. She had seen it happen too many times.

She didn’t want that.

She didn’t want to lose him.

And yet… that’s exactly what she had done.

A tear slipped down her cheek, followed by another.

It wasn’t sudden. It wasn’t dramatic.

It was slow.

Quiet.

The kind of sadness that builds over time until it becomes impossible to ignore.

“I was scared,” she whispered to herself.

But now, the truth was clearer than ever—

It wasn’t love that frightened her.

It was the idea of losing it.

And in trying so hard to avoid that pain, she had chosen it anyway.

Days passed, but the realization didn’t fade.

If anything, it grew stronger.

She found herself replaying every moment they had shared, every conversation, every glance, searching for something she could hold onto.

But memories weren’t enough.

They never were.

One afternoon, unable to sit with the weight of it any longer, Aanya found herself standing in front of the bookstore again. The same one where everything had started.

Her heart beat faster as she pushed the door open.

The bell chimed softly.

She stepped inside, her eyes scanning the room almost instantly.

But he wasn’t there.

Of course he wasn’t.

A faint, bittersweet smile touched her lips.

What had she expected?

That he would still be waiting?

That life would pause just because she wasn’t ready?

She walked slowly between the shelves, her fingers brushing against the books just like that first day. Everything looked the same, yet everything felt different.

Because he wasn’t there.

And maybe… he never would be again.

As she stepped back outside, the rain had begun to fall once more.

This time, she didn’t run from it.

She stood there, letting it soak through her clothes, her hair, her thoughts.

For the first time, she allowed herself to feel everything she had been holding back—

The regret.

The longing.

The love.

And it hurt.

Because now she understood something she hadn’t before—

Some chances don’t come back.

And some people…

don’t wait forever.
