Soon Enough

"Breaking news. Yesterday at midnight, a major heist took place at the Museum of Valuable Artifacts where the priceless crown of duchess Trinity was stolen."

"Authorities believe that it may be the work of a giant underground crime syndicate. Investigation is currently underway."

...----------------...

Frederico and Aria burst out laughing on the couch.

"Giant underground crime syndicate, they say." Frederico turned up the tv volume as he snickered.

"How could they ever admit to the public they were outplayed by half a dozen crooks?" Aria popped open a soda can, leaning into the cushions.

"Not surprising," Dani chimed in from the corner of the small warehouse, "they're utterly incompetant." She sat at her desk, searching for new jobs on the laptop

Aria chuckled. "So true. They were literally on our tails last night but still couldn't catch us."

Dani grinned and crossed her arms, leaning back on the chair. "Thank that new chief of police, whats-his-name. Ever since he took over, the whole police department's been nerfed."

Frederico approached Dani and leaned over her shoulder, watching the laptop screen. "By the way, how much is the client paying? Isn't the crown worth millions?"

Dani cranked her neck up at him, irritatedly then shooed him off with her hand. "First, get out of my face. You're breathing down my neck."

Frederico pouted his lips and raised his hands up defensively. "Fine." He backed away, but was still close enough to prop himself on the desk to see what she was doing.

"It's only worth millions in theory. Actually selling it would prove to be almost impossible considering it's a national treasure." Dani scrolled through the odd jobs listed on the dark web.

"And taking it apart would significantly reduce its value, so we take what we can get." She continued.

"And that's how much?" Frederico asked anticipatingly.

"45k" Dani stated.

Frederico's jaw dropped. Aria spat out her drink.

"WHAT?!" Aria's head snapped away from the TV towards them. "All that work for 50k?! Are we THAT desperate?"

"Seems like it..." Frederico sounded dejected. "I mean, 45k is a lot but split between the 6 of us...it's—"

"7,500 dollars each." Luciano walked through the warehouse entrance, one hand in his pocket, and the other holding six envelopes of cash.

"Boss!" Frederico's face lit up when he saw Luciano and ran up to him like a puppy to it's owner.

"Back from the meet-up so soon?" Dani looked up and pushed her glasses over her head. "Normally the clients are VERY thorough in checking the legitimacy of the deal, so I assumed you'd be gone the whole day."

"The news broadcast was proof enough that the crown was real, so things went much smoother that usual." Luciano gave Frederico and Dani their portions, then walked to Aria to give hers.

"Ah, there he is. The reason we were almost caught yesterday." Aria exclaimed in a sarcastic tone.

"Should you really be saying that when I have your paycheck in my hand?" Luciano raised an eyebrow, dangling the envelope in front of her.

"I'm sorry, sir. I misspoke. Please forgive me." Aria fluttered her lashes at him dramatically, reaching a hand towards the money.

Luciano scoffed out a laugh. "Aren't you charming..." He dropped the envelope on her lap, then plopped himself down on the couch.

"Where are Ernest and Bao? I still gotta give them their share."

"They're outback fixing Aria's motorcycle." Frederico nodded to the back door with a smothered smirk on his face.

"Apparently she thought it was a good idea to pop a wheelie while the cops were chasing her." Dani sighed with disappointment.

"It was JUST for a second, and it's only minor tire damage." Aria rolled her eyes and sipped her drink. "Y'all don't know how to have fun."

Dani smiled softly at Aria antics before furrowing her brows with concern as she turned to Luciano. "So, was your face actually seen?"

Luciano nodded regretfully. "Unfortunately. It was my fault for taking too long to remove the camera." Luciano rubbed the bridge of his nose.

"Then it's only a matter of time before they realize who you really are..." Frederico's eyes were hooded, and his voice sounded grave.

Luciano's eyes sharpened, he crossed his legs, then traced his fingers along the v-shaped scar on his face. "Soon enough..."
