The Dark Room

The door clicked shut behind Sapna, leaving a heavy, vibrating silence in the room. Jia stood paralyzed, her vision blurring as tears finally spilled over. The cruelty of her sister’s words—the reminder that she was an interloper in her own home—clung to her like a second skin. She sank onto her bed, weeping quietly, the weight of her unknown past feeling like an anchor dragging her down.

Across the country, within the cold, marble-lined walls of the King’s mansion, the atmosphere was even more fractured. Ram moved like a shadow, slipping through the cracked window of Anjali’s private quarters. He found her crumpled on the floor, her spirit broken by the afternoon’s violence. He rushed to her side, pulling her into his arms.

"Hey, hey baby," he whispered, his voice thick with concern. "What is wrong? What did he do?"

Anjali looked up, her eyes red-rimmed and fierce. "That stupid father of yours did it again. Just because I refused to help him lure some new girl into his bed. He thinks he can break me, Ram."

Ram looked away, a wave of familiar sadness and impotence washing over him. "I am sorry, Anjali. You will be alright. I’ll make sure of it."

"I will not be alright, Ram!" she snapped, her grief turning into a sharp, desperate anger. "We love each other. We are rotting here. Why can’t we just runaway? Me and you, starting a new life where his name can’t reach us."

Ram stiffened, the suggestion hitting him like a physical blow. He looked at the door, terrified that even the walls had ears in this house.

In the mahogany-paneled sanctuary of Shiva’s home office, the "King" himself sat enthroned in a leather chair. One of his wives, an American woman named Kate, was behind him, her hands trembling as she massaged his shoulders. Shiva was deep in conversation with his lead guard, Vishnu, about their new target in Shimla.

"Her stepfather is a police officer, Boss," Vishnu explained. "He adores her more than anything in this world. He’s protective, which makes a direct approach risky. That’s why I suggested Madam Anjali. A woman's touch to lure her into the trap."

Kate, distracted by the terrifying conversation, felt her hand slip. Her nails accidentally snagged against the skin of Shiva’s back. The reaction was instantaneous. Shiva let out a low snarl, spinning around with a look of predatory rage.

"Please, I am sorry! I didn't mean to!" Kate cried, her voice trembling. She had been lured to India with promises of love, only to find herself a prisoner in a golden cage.

"You wanted to kill me, you brat?" Shiva roared. He delivered a stinging slap that sent her sprawling across the floor. As she gasped for breath, he lunged forward, kicking her squarely in the stomach. Kate’s scream of agony echoed through the vents of the house.

"Please forgive me..." she whimpered, clutching her midsection.

Shiva didn't even look at her as he summoned a guard. "Take her to the dark room," he commanded coldly. "Leave her there with no food or water for three days. Let her contemplate her 'accident' in the shadows."

Back in Shimla, a different kind of conspiracy was brewing. Sapna sat with her mother, Radha, the two of them bonded by a shared resentment. "I am tired of her, Mom," Sapna pleaded. "Get her out of our lives for good."

Radha patted her daughter’s hand, a dark resolve in her eyes. "I know your dad loves her, but this time, I will leave him with no choice. I will find a way to make him let her go."

Meanwhile, Ram tried to talk sense into a frantic Anjali. "He is too powerful, Anjali. If we run, he will hunt us down and kill us both." Seeing her despair, he tried a different angle, a glimmer of a plan forming. "Listen to me. Help him. Get him this new girl. When he is distracted by his new obsession, that is when we make our move. We use her as our shield to escape."
