Cracks in control

The Wall Between Us

Episode 4: Cracks in Control

Morning came too quickly.

Lucy stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the cuff of her blazer. Sharp lines. Neutral tones. Controlled.

CEO.

Not a wife.

Not his wife.

Her phone buzzed.

Jake: How’s married life? Still alive?

Lucy smirked faintly.

Lucy: Unfortunately.

Another message came almost instantly.

Jake: Need me to come kidnap you?

She paused… then typed:

Lucy: I’ll let you know.

She slipped her phone into her bag and headed out.

---

The dining room was already set.

Perfectly arranged.

Perfectly cold.

Victor sat at the table, reading something on his tablet. Composed. Untouched by the morning.

Lucy stopped at the entrance for half a second—then walked in like she owned the place.

“Good morning… husband.”

Victor didn’t look up immediately.

“Good morning.”

Lucy took a seat across from him.

A maid placed breakfast in front of her—fresh, expensive, carefully prepared.

Lucy glanced at it, then at Victor.

“You always eat like this?”

Victor finally looked at her.

“It’s efficient.”

Lucy picked up her fork.

“Food isn’t supposed to be efficient.”

Victor didn’t respond.

Lucy took a bite anyway.

---

A pause.

Then—

“I’ll be coming to the company today.”

Victor’s voice was calm, like he was stating something obvious.

Lucy looked up slowly.

“No.”

Victor met her gaze.

“It’s a joint merger now.”

“And I’m still the CEO of my company.”

Silence.

The first real clash of the day.

---

Victor set his tablet down.

“You’re under my name now.”

Lucy’s expression didn’t change.

“But not under your control.”

Their eyes locked.

Neither backed down.

---

“Publicly,” Victor continued, “we need to appear united.”

Lucy leaned back slightly.

“Then stand next to me. Not above me.”

A beat.

Victor studied her.

Really studied her.

“…Fine.”

Lucy blinked once.

Not expecting that.

But she didn’t show it.

“Good.”

---

Later that day—

The company lobby buzzed with quiet tension.

Employees whispered. Watched.

Lucy walked in first.

Confident. Unshaken.

Victor followed beside her.

Cold. Untouchable.

Power.

Together, they looked unstoppable.

But the air between them said otherwise.

---

“Miss Williams—”

“Is it true you’re married to Mr. Davis?”

“Was this planned?”

Questions flew from every direction.

Lucy didn’t slow down.

“Yes,” she said calmly. “And no further comments.”

Victor didn’t speak.

But his presence alone silenced the room.

---

Inside the elevator—

The doors closed.

Silence.

Lucy exhaled quietly.

“That was annoying.”

Victor glanced at her.

“You handled it well.”

Lucy looked at him.

“…Was that a compliment?”

Victor looked away.

“An observation.”

Lucy smirked slightly.

“I’ll take it.”

---

The elevator stopped.

Their floor.

Their battlefield.

---

Inside the boardroom—

Tension hit immediately.

Executives from both companies sat around the table.

Waiting.

Watching.

Judging.

Lucy walked to her usual seat—

Victor didn’t.

He stood at the head of the table.

Lucy noticed.

Of course she did.

---

“From now on,” Victor began, “all major decisions will go through—”

“Me.”

Lucy’s voice cut in cleanly.

Sharp.

Controlled.

All eyes turned.

---

Victor looked at her.

Lucy held his gaze.

Unmoved.

“If this is a merger,” she continued, “then it’s equal.”

Silence filled the room.

Dangerous silence.

---

One of the executives shifted nervously.

“Miss Williams, with all due respect—”

Lucy didn’t look at him.

“With all due respect,” she said coolly, “this company didn’t survive this long by being led.”

Her eyes flicked to Victor.

“It survived because I lead it.”

---

A pause.

Victor stepped forward.

The tension thickened.

“Then prove it.”

Lucy’s lips curved slightly.

“Gladly.”

---

Hours later—

The meeting ended.

And Lucy had won.

Not loudly.

Not aggressively.

But clearly.

---

As the room emptied, Victor remained.

Watching her.

Lucy gathered her files calmly.

“You’re staring.”

“I’m evaluating.”

Lucy looked at him.

“And?”

Victor took a step closer.

“You’re more capable than I expected.”

Lucy raised a brow.

“You say that like it’s surprising.”

“It is.”

---

Lucy stepped closer too.

Closing the distance.

“You’re not the only one who underestimated someone.”

Victor’s gaze darkened slightly.

“Be careful, Lucy.”

Her name.

The first time he said it like that.

Not distant.

Not formal.

---

Lucy felt it.

But didn’t show it.

“I don’t need to be careful,” she said quietly.

“I just need to win.”

---

A pause.

Then—

Victor spoke again.

Lower.

More serious.

“This isn’t a game.”

Lucy’s eyes didn’t waver.

“No,” she said.

“It’s a war.”

---

They stood there—

Too close again.

Too tense.

Too aware of each other.

---

For a moment—

Neither moved.

Neither spoke.

---

Then Lucy stepped back.

Breaking it.

“I have work to do.”

She turned and walked away.

---

Victor watched her leave.

His expression unreadable.

But something had shifted.

Again.

---

She wasn’t someone he could control.

And for the first time…

Victor Davis realized—

That might be a problem.
