Chapter 5: The Silent Intersection

Elara landed softly on the pavement, pulling the metal grate closed just as she heard a furious bang from below. She was breathing hard, her hands scraped, and her clothes were now cold, wet, and smelling strongly of iron and damp earth.

She was on a quiet, residential side street. She needed to move fast before the Guild agent found a way to call for backup or climb out of the maintenance hatch.

The clue from the old pump was clear: STARGAZER STREET. NORTH.

Elara quickly used her phone to pull up a map, keeping the brightness low. Stargazer Street was a small, wedge-shaped street known for its beautiful, historical houses—and its close proximity to the old Observatory Dome from the postcard. It was about fifteen minutes away on foot, heading north.

She kept to the darkest shadows, sticking close to fences and hedges. Every distant siren or sound of a car braking sent a jolt of panic through her. She tried to think like Silas Thorne.

He was hunted by the same Guild a hundred years ago. He wouldn't have chosen a crowded location. He would have chosen a place that was overlooked, but still significant to the City of Perpetual Dusk's myth.

Stargazer Street led directly to a small, private park called Meridian Square. The square was famous for a huge, decorative iron compass rose set into the cobblestones in the center of the intersection.

Elara arrived at the street corner, easing herself behind a huge ornamental shrub. The streetlights here were dimmer, giving the entire area a soft, almost sepia glow. She could see the circular design of the compass rose shining faintly in the middle of the street ahead.

She waited, watching and listening. Silence. The street was dead quiet.

When she was sure she was alone, Elara crept out and walked quickly toward the center of the intersection. She stood directly over the compass rose. It was enormous, made of heavy, black wrought iron.

The arrows pointed to North, South, East, and West, but there were also smaller, more detailed marks showing degrees.

Elara crouched down and pulled out the Viridian Scraps. She matched the constellation scrap—the one with the golden Dragon's Eye—to the direction arrow pointing North.

Thorne had written: "Find where the Dragon's Eye stares..."

The golden star on the map wasn't pointing directly North; it was tilted exactly 19 degrees to the East of North.

Elara crawled on her knees, matching the paper map to the physical compass rose beneath her. She found the "North" arrow, and then followed the curve of the iron until she hit the 19-degree mark.

The iron arrow at that specific spot, usually just decoration, was slightly loose.

Elara pushed against the arrow. It didn't turn, but it clicked inward, like a button being pressed.

A low, grinding sound instantly rose from the cobblestones beneath her. It was a slow, heavy sound, like massive gears turning deep underground. The iron compass rose in the street began to rotate, but not fully.

Only a small, perfect circle of cobblestones—about three feet wide, just beyond the edge of the compass rose—started to descend.

The secret entrance was opening right in the middle of the street.

A cold, musty air wafted up from the hole, carrying a faint, strange scent—not dust or decay, but something like ozone and distant, sweet incense.

Elara knew she couldn't hesitate. The grinding noise would soon attract attention, either from a neighbor or, worse, the Guild.

She slipped her satchel off her shoulder and lowered herself into the descending darkness. As she dropped, she reached up and gave the loosened arrow a quick pull. The arrow snapped back to its original position, and the stone circle stopped its descent, clicking back into place with a sudden, dull thud.

Elara was completely sealed off. She was underground again, standing in darkness that was absolute and silent.
