The first ranking

The sound of metal sealing echoed through the chamber like a verdict.

Sakura stood still, chest rising and falling too fast to ignore. Around her, students slowly regained their footing—some kneeling, some leaning against walls, a few still trying to process what had just happened.

No one spoke.

Not because they were calm.

Because they were listening.

Waiting.

For the next rule.

Kai stepped back first, releasing his grip on Sakura’s wrist. The moment his hand left her, she became painfully aware of how close he had been.

“I said stay close,” he muttered.

“I did fine,” Sakura replied automatically.

Kai glanced at her. “You got targeted twice in the first minute.”

Sakura opened her mouth, then closed it again.

Because he was right.

Across the arena, Akane was staring at them.

Not at the drones.

Not at the instructors.

At them.

Her expression wasn’t just anger anymore.

It was something sharper.

Something unsettled.

The drones retracted into the floor without announcement.

The arena lights dimmed.

Then returned to normal.

As if nothing had happened.

A voice echoed through the chamber.

“Trial complete.”

A section of the wall opened, revealing Instructor Vale again, standing with the same calm expression as before.

“As expected,” he said, “survival rate: eighty-two percent.”

A few students flinched at the number.

Sakura felt her stomach tighten slightly.

Survival rate.

Not pass rate.

Vale continued, “You will now receive your initial classification.”

Screens above the arena flickered to life.

Names began to appear again.

But this time, there were symbols beside them.

Sakura Yumi — C-Rank

Akane Yumi — B-Rank

Kai Ren — A-Rank

Sakura stared at the screen.

C-Rank.

Not the lowest, but far from the top.

Akane let out a sharp laugh. “B-Rank? Seriously?”

But her voice wasn’t amused.

It was offended.

Kai didn’t react at all.

Sakura turned slightly toward him. “A-Rank… on the first day?”

Kai’s answer was immediate. “It’s not my first day.”

Silence.

That statement landed differently than anything else so far.

Akane heard it too.

Her eyes narrowed. “What did you just say?”

Kai didn’t repeat himself.

He didn’t need to.

Vale raised a hand slightly.

“Classification is not permanent,” he said. “It reflects compatibility, adaptability, and response accuracy during live simulation.”

A student from the back spoke up. “Simulation? That was real.”

Vale looked at him briefly. “Reality is part of the simulation.”

No one liked that answer.

But no one argued again.

The students were separated into smaller groups after that.

Sakura found herself in a hallway lined with identical doors, each labeled with numbers instead of names. The system was too organized to feel normal.

Akane walked slightly ahead of her, not waiting.

Kai was placed in a different direction entirely.

That was when Sakura realized something subtle.

They were being separated deliberately.

“Hey,” Sakura called out.

Akane stopped, but didn’t turn around immediately.

“What?” she asked.

Sakura hesitated. “That ranking system doesn’t make sense.”

Akane finally looked at her.

For a second, neither of them spoke.

Then Akane smiled faintly. “Since when do you care about systems?”

“I don’t,” Sakura replied. “I care about patterns.”

That made Akane pause slightly.

“Then what pattern do you see?”

Sakura thought for a moment.

“Control,” she said simply.

Akane’s smile faded a little.

Then she turned away again. “You’re thinking too hard.”

But her voice wasn’t as certain as before.

Sakura was assigned to Room 14.

Inside was minimal: a bed, a desk, a sealed cabinet, and a screen embedded into the wall.

No windows.

Of course.

She sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the screen.

It activated automatically.

Instructor Vale appeared.

Not live.

Pre-recorded.

“Welcome to Phase One accommodation,” he said. “Your training begins immediately at 0600 hours. Do not be late. Late entry will be penalized.”

The screen went dark.

Sakura exhaled slowly.

Then something unexpected happened.

A soft knock at the door.

She stood instantly.

Another knock.

Careful. Controlled.

She opened the door slightly.

Kai stood outside.

Sakura blinked. “You’re not supposed to be here.”

“I know,” he said.

That was becoming a pattern.

Sakura narrowed her eyes. “Why are you here?”

Kai glanced down the hallway briefly, then stepped closer without invitation.

“You’re being placed incorrectly,” he said.

Sakura frowned. “Excuse me?”

“A-Rank and B-Rank placements are being adjusted based on unknown criteria,” he continued. “But yours doesn’t match your reaction speed or spatial awareness.”

Sakura crossed her arms. “So you came to complain about my ranking?”

“No,” Kai said. “I came to warn you.”

That made her pause.

“Warn me about what?”

Kai hesitated for the first time.

It was small.

But noticeable.

“This place doesn’t promote,” he said quietly. “It sorts.”

Sakura stared at him.

“That’s not a warning,” she replied. “That’s a statement.”

Kai looked at her directly now.

“And statements here are dangerous.”

Before she could respond, footsteps echoed at the far end of the hallway.

Both of them turned.

Akane stood there.

Perfect timing.

Her eyes moved from Kai to Sakura instantly.

Then stayed there.

Something sharp flickered in her expression.

“So,” Akane said slowly, “this is what you do now?”

Sakura didn’t move. “What are you talking about?”

Akane stepped closer.

“You get separated from me for five minutes and suddenly you’re already collecting allies?”

Kai didn’t react to her tone.

Sakura sighed. “This isn’t what you think.”

Akane laughed once.

“That’s exactly what people always say when it is.”

Silence stretched between them.

Then Akane looked at Kai directly.

“You picked her over me?”

Kai blinked slightly.

“I didn’t pick anyone.”

Akane’s smile tightened. “That’s worse.”

She turned sharply and walked away without another word.

Her footsteps faded quickly.

Sakura watched her go.

Then looked at Kai.

“This is going to get worse,” she said quietly.

Kai nodded once.

“It already is.”

That night, Sakura couldn’t sleep.

The room was too silent. Too sealed. Too intentional.

She kept replaying everything.

The drones.

The rankings.

Kai’s words.

And Akane’s expression.

At exactly 02:13 AM, the screen on her wall flickered on again.

Sakura sat up instantly.

But it wasn’t Vale this time.

It was a single message.

“You are not in the correct tier.”

Then another line appeared beneath it.

“Correction will begin soon.”

Sakura stood slowly.

The room felt different now.

Like it had just acknowledged her awareness.

And somewhere deep inside the facility, alarms that weren’t audible yet were already preparing to exist.

The Operation wasn’t just training them.

It was adjusting them.

And Sakura had just been marked as a mistake.
