The sun set like a drop of blood over the mountains. Nicco walked to the fountain as she had done a thousand times before, but tonight her feet felt heavier. The locket was tucked beneath her dress, pressed against her heart. The mark on her back seemed to tingle, as if it knew something was about to change.
She stepped into the cool water and began to sing. But this time, her voice was different. It carried sorrow, yes, but also something new: the beginning of strength. The birds gathered as always, but they too seemed quieter, as if holding their breath.
Halfway through her song, she heard a soft footstep on dry leaves.
She stopped singing and turned.
A young man stood at the edge of the fountain, his hands open at his sides. He was tall, with warm brown skin and golden-brown eyes that seemed to glow faintly in the twilight. Dark hair was braided down his back, and woven into the braid was a single white feather. He wore simple traveling clothes—leather and wool—but there was something regal in the way he held himself.
“You are Nicco,” he said. His voice was low and gentle, like a stream over smooth stones.
“And you are Pond,” she replied. “The tiger prince.”
He bowed his head. “I have heard you sing for many nights. I did not reveal myself until now because I wanted you to learn your truth first. Your grandmother told me everything.”
Nicco wrapped her arms around herself. “So it’s true. I’m a fairy princess. And a queen wants me dead.”
“Yes,” Pond said. “But you are not alone. My kingdom—the Tiger Kingdom—offers you shelter and protection. My father, the Tiger King, knows who you are. We have long sought peace with the fairy realm, but Queen Melody calls us beasts and monsters. Helping you may finally show the fairies that we are not enemies. Or it may start a war.”
Nicco stepped out of the fountain, water dripping from her dress. She stood face to face with Pond for the first time. He was taller than her by nearly a head, but his eyes were soft.
“Why should I trust you?” she asked.
Pond reached into his shirt and pulled out a small pendant on a leather cord. It was a tiny carving of a tiger curled around a crescent moon. “This is the symbol of my family’s promise. My great-grandfather carved it when he first dreamed of peace between tigers and fairies. I have worn it since I was a child. I give it to you as my word: I will protect you with my life.”
He held it out.
Nicco looked at the pendant, then at his eyes. She saw no lie there. Slowly, she took it and slipped it over her head. The pendant rested beside her mother’s locket.
“I don’t know how to be a princess,” she whispered.
Pond smiled—a small, warm smile. “And I don’t know how to be a friend to fairies. But we can learn together.”
For a long moment, they simply stood there, two strangers from two worlds that hated each other. And yet, standing at the fountain under the rising moon, neither felt like a stranger.
“What happens now?” Nicco asked.
“Now,” Pond said, “we wait for your grandmother’s signal. When the queen’s hunters draw near, we flee to the Tiger Kingdom. Until then, I will watch over you. Not from the shadows anymore. By your side.”
Nicco nodded. For the first time in twenty-two years, she did not feel entirely alone.
