Chapter 4 — The Woman Who Still Belonged

The night felt… off.

Zaelina couldn’t explain it.

Nothing had happened.

Nothing had changed.

And yet

Her chest felt tight.

She stood near the window, arms wrapped lightly around herself as she stared at the dark city outside.

Sylus wasn’t home yet.

Of course he wasn’t.

He rarely was.

Still…

Tonight felt different.

Like something was coming.

The Door

It happened suddenly.

The sound of the front door opening echoed through the quiet house.

Zaelina turned immediately.

Her heart skipping

Maybe he came early.

She walked toward the stairs, her steps slow but hopeful.

And then she saw them.

Sylus.

And her.

Lilith.

Standing right there in the doorway

Like she had never left.

Zaelina stopped.

Completely.

Her fingers tightened slightly around the railing.

Lilith looked… different.

More tired.

More fragile.

But her presence

Still carried something strong.

Something familiar.

Something that didn’t belong in this house anymore.

And yet

She stood there like she did.

Arwan clung to her side, small hands gripping her dress as his wide eyes looked around.

“Papa…” he whispered softly when he saw Sylus.

And just like that

Everything shifted.

Sylus bent slightly, picking him up without hesitation.

His expression softened.

It was subtle.

But Zaelina saw it.

She always saw everything.

The Moment

Lilith stepped forward suddenly.

And before Zaelina could even process it

She wrapped her arms around Sylus.

Tightly.

“I had nowhere else to go…”

Her voice broke instantly.

Tears spilling as she held onto him.

Zaelina’s breath caught.

She waited.

Waited for him to push her away.

To step back.

To set a boundary.

But he didn’t.

His hand moved slowly to Lilith’s back.

Patting her.

Comforting her.

Like it was natural.

Like she still belonged there.

Something inside Zaelina cracked.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just… quietly.

Painfully.

The Explanation

Lilith pulled back slightly, wiping her tears.

“He left me…” she said, her voice shaking.

Sylus’s jaw tightened.

But he stayed silent.

“He used me… and then he cheated on me…”

Zaelina felt her chest tighten.

Lilith looked broken.

Truly broken.

But that didn’t make this easier.

“I didn’t know where else to go…” she whispered again.

Silence filled the room.

Heavy.

Waiting.

Zaelina’s heart pounded.

This was the moment.

The moment where Sylus would decide.

Her…

Or the past.

But Sylus didn’t look at her.

Not even once.

“Stay here.”

The words were simple.

Final.

And everything inside Zaelina…

Went still.

That Night

The house felt smaller.

Too full.

Too crowded.

Not because of space

But because of presence.

Lilith moved around like she remembered everything.

Like she had done it before.

Like she belonged.

And maybe she did.

Zaelina stayed quiet.

She didn’t question him.

Didn’t argue.

Didn’t fight.

Because what was the point?

She had already seen the answer.

The Bedroom

Sylus entered late.

Zaelina sat on the bed, her hands resting in her lap, her posture straight too composed for how she felt inside.

She looked up when he walked in.

For a moment

Neither of them spoke.

“I didn’t know she would come,” he said finally.

Her lips curved slightly.

A small, tired smile.

“It doesn’t matter.”

But it did.

It mattered more than anything.

Silence stretched again.

Then he walked toward her.

Closer.

Her breath slowed.

“Are you upset?” he asked.

The question felt almost… distant.

She shook her head softly.

“No.”

Another lie.

But she had gotten used to them.

His hand reached her face.

Tilting her chin slightly upward.

“Don’t lie.”

Her eyes filled instantly.

But she blinked them away.

“I’m not,” she whispered.

And before she could say anything else

He kissed her.

Hard.

Not gentle.

Not questioning.

Like he needed to prove something.

Her body tensed.

Her hands pressed lightly against his chest

Not pushing him away.

But not pulling him closer either.

He didn’t notice.

Or maybe

He didn’t care.

Because to him

This wasn’t about her feelings.

It never had been.

After

He fell asleep like nothing had happened.

Like the night hadn’t been heavy.

Like her silence hadn’t been loud.

Zaelina lay beside him.

Eyes open.

Staring at the ceiling.

Her body still.

Her mind restless.

And in the quiet of that moment

She finally understood something clearly.

She wasn’t his choice.

She never had been.
