By the fifth day, Sophie had come to a very important conclusion:
St. Ardent Academy was not a normal school.
Not slightly unusual.
Not “a bit different.”
No.
It was fully suspicious.
And no one seemed concerned about it except her.
“You’re thinking too much,” Daniel said, walking beside her.
“I am thinking the correct amount,” Sophie replied. “This place gave me a test using my trauma on Day Four.”
“That’s part of the system.”
“That’s not comforting.”
“It’s not supposed to be.”
“Exactly my point.”
They walked through the courtyard, where students were already gathered in small groups.
Sophie noticed something new this time.
People weren’t just calm.
They were… observant.
Watching each other.
Not in a judgmental way.
But like they were studying patterns.
“…okay,” she said slowly. “Why does it feel like everyone here is secretly analyzing everyone else?”
Daniel glanced around briefly. “Because they are.”
She stopped walking.
“I’m sorry—what?”
He turned back to her.
“At St. Ardent, people aren’t evaluated only by tests,” he explained. “They’re evaluated constantly.”
Sophie blinked.
“…that sounds exhausting.”
“It becomes normal.”
“I refuse.”
“You won’t have a choice.”
She stared at him.
“You’re telling me… people are just walking around, silently judging each other all day?”
“Not judging,” he corrected. “Observing.”
“That’s worse.”
They continued walking.
Sophie crossed her arms.
“Okay, so let me understand this,” she said. “This school doesn’t care about beauty, doesn’t give normal tests, and now everyone is secretly studying everyone else like we’re in some kind of social experiment?”
“Yes.”
“…and you thought I would adjust easily?”
“I thought you would complain first.”
“That’s fair.”
Before she could say more, a voice echoed across the courtyard.
“All first-year students, assemble.”
Sophie froze.
“…I don’t like announcements.”
Daniel sighed slightly. “Come on.”
They joined the group forming near a raised platform.
A tall woman stood at the front—sharp eyes, composed posture, the kind of presence that made people pay attention without raising her voice.
“This is new,” Sophie whispered.
“Orientation,” Daniel said.
“Five days late?”
“Yes.”
“This school is disorganized.”
“It’s not.”
“That’s worse.”
The woman began speaking.
“At St. Ardent Academy, you are not here by accident.”
Sophie shifted slightly.
I definitely feel like I am.
“You were selected because of potential,” the woman continued. “Not talent. Not status. Potential.”
Sophie raised an eyebrow slightly.
“…okay, that’s new.”
“You will not be treated equally here,” the woman said.
Sophie blinked.
“…excuse me?”
“You will be treated according to your growth,” she continued calmly. “Your decisions. Your awareness. Your ability to understand yourself and others.”
Sophie leaned toward Daniel.
“Is this a school or a life crisis?”
“Yes.”
“There are no rankings displayed publicly,” the woman went on. “But they exist.”
Sophie froze.
“…of course they do.”
“Your actions determine your position.”
“Ah,” Sophie whispered. “So I’m currently at the bottom.”
“Most likely,” Daniel replied.
She glared at him. “Support me.”
“I am.”
“You’re not.”
The woman’s voice sharpened slightly.
“And one more thing.”
The courtyard went completely still.
“No one here was chosen randomly.”
Sophie felt something shift again.
That sentence—
It stuck.
After the assembly, students began dispersing.
But Sophie didn’t move.
“…Daniel.”
“Yes?”
“That last part.”
“What about it?”
She looked at him.
“No one was chosen randomly.”
“Yes.”
“…then who chose us?”
For the first time—
Daniel hesitated.
Not long.
But enough.
“I don’t know,” he said.
Sophie narrowed her eyes slightly.
“You’re lying.”
“I’m not.”
“You hesitated.”
“I was thinking.”
“You don’t think. You just know things.”
“That’s not true.”
“It feels true.”
He looked at her.
And for once—
He didn’t deflect completely.
“…there are rumors,” he said.
Sophie leaned in slightly.
“I love rumors.”
“Some people think there’s a sponsor system,” he said. “Anonymous individuals who select students.”
Sophie blinked.
“…like scholarships?”
“Something like that.”
“But more secretive?”
“Yes.”
“That’s… slightly terrifying.”
She crossed her arms again.
“So someone out there just… picked me?”
“Yes.”
“Based on what?”
He looked at her.
“You.”
Sophie stared at him.
“That’s not helpful.”
“It’s the truth.”
“I don’t like vague answers.”
“You’re in the wrong place.”
They started walking again.
This time, slower.
Sophie’s mind was racing.
Someone chose her.
Not for her beauty.
Not for what people saw.
But for something else.
Something she didn’t even understand yet.
“…what if they made a mistake?” she said suddenly.
Daniel stopped.
She kept talking.
“What if I’m not supposed to be here? What if they picked the wrong person?”
He turned to face her fully.
“They didn’t.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
“How?”
He held her gaze.
“Because you’re still here.”
Sophie blinked.
“…that’s your argument?”
“Yes.”
“That’s not strong enough.”
“It is here.”
She looked away slightly.
“…this place is too serious.”
“You bring enough unseriousness for balance.”
“That’s true.”
A small smile returned to her face.
Faint.
But real.
“Okay,” she said. “Fine.”
“Fine?”
“Fine.”
A pause.
Then—
“I’ll stay.”
Daniel raised an eyebrow slightly.
“That was fast.”
“I like dramatic decisions.”
“That’s not dramatic.”
“It is internally.”
They continued walking.
As they passed a group of students, Sophie noticed something again.
Not staring.
Not admiration.
But awareness.
Like people were… noticing her differently now.
“…wait,” she said.
“What?”
“Are they observing me right now?”
“Yes.”
She straightened immediately.
“Okay. I need to act impressive.”
“Don’t.”
“Why not?”
“Because that’s the easiest way to fail.”
She froze mid-step.
“…this school is stressful.”
“You’ll adapt.”
“You keep saying that.”
“And you keep proving it.”
Sophie exhaled slowly.
Then—
She relaxed.
Just a little.
For once—
She didn’t try to impress anyone walking past.
Didn’t adjust her posture.
Didn’t perform.
And something strange happened.
Nothing.
No reaction.
No shift.
Just… normal.
Sophie blinked.
“…that worked?”
“Yes.”
“That’s boring.”
“That’s growth.”
“I don’t like growth.”
“You need it.”
“I know.”
They stopped near the edge of the courtyard.
Sophie looked out across the academy.
Still confusing.
Still unfamiliar.
Still overwhelming.
But not as scary as before.
“…Daniel?”
“Yes?”
“If someone really chose me…”
He waited.
“…then I want to know why.”
He nodded slightly.
“You will.”
“When?”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s not satisfying.”
“It’s honest.”
She sighed.
“Fine.”
But inside—
Something had changed again.
Not just curiosity.
Not just confusion.
Purpose.
Small.
Unclear.
But there.
For the first time—
Sophie wasn’t just reacting to what was happening.
She was starting to move toward something.
Even if she didn’t fully understand it yet.
And somewhere, far beyond the academy—
Someone was watching.
Not judging.
Not interfering.
Just observing.
Waiting.
Because Sophie wasn’t just another student.
She wasn’t just “the beautiful one.”
She was something else.
Something they had seen before she ever did.
And soon—
She would start to see it too
