Chapter 3: The Transfer Student

The classroom buzzed with noise.

Chairs scraped against the floor, laughter bounced between walls, and voices overlapped in a messy rhythm only students understood. It was loud, alive—

Normal.

Lin Xia sat at the back, her head slightly lowered, her presence fading into the background like always.

No one spoke to her.

No one ever did.

But today… something was different.

“Quiet down, everyone.”

The teacher’s voice cut through the noise.

Slowly, the class settled.

“We have a new student joining us today.”

That got their attention.

Whispers spread instantly.

“A transfer?”

“From where?”

“Is it a guy?”

Lin Xia didn’t react.

She had heard it all before. New faces came and went. None of it mattered.

“Come in.”

The door opened.

And for the first time that day—

Lin Xia looked up.

The girl who walked in didn’t rush.

She didn’t hesitate either.

Her steps were calm, measured, controlled.

Long black hair fell neatly over her shoulders, her uniform perfectly arranged, not a single wrinkle out of place. Her expression was composed—almost distant—but her eyes…

Her eyes were sharp.

Too sharp.

Like they were quietly observing everything.

“Introduce yourself,” the teacher said.

A brief silence.

Then—

“Shen Yue.”

Her voice was soft.

But steady.

“I transferred here for personal reasons. I hope we get along.”

Simple.

Too simple.

But something about it made the room quieter than it should have been.

Then the whispers returned, louder this time.

“She’s pretty…”

“Wait, she’s actually really pretty—”

“Do you think she’s rich?”

Lin Xia’s gaze lingered a second longer than it should have.

Shen Yue.

She didn’t look like someone who belonged here.

She looked… dangerous.

“Take the empty seat.”

The teacher pointed.

Right beside Lin Xia.

Of all places.

For a moment, Lin Xia thought it was a joke.

But it wasn’t.

Shen Yue walked down the aisle without hesitation.

Every step drew attention.

Every movement was watched.

Even Zhao Meilin’s group had gone quiet.

That alone was unusual.

Lin Xia lowered her eyes again as Shen Yue approached.

The seat beside her shifted.

Fabric brushed softly.

Then—

Silence.

They didn’t speak.

Not even a greeting.

And Lin Xia was fine with that.

Better that way.

Classes dragged on.

Words from the board blurred into meaningless noise.

Lin Xia didn’t take notes.

Didn’t try to listen.

Her mind was elsewhere.

Always elsewhere.

But something pulled her back.

A presence.

Subtle.

Quiet.

But impossible to ignore.

Slowly, she turned her head—

And froze.

Shen Yue was looking at her.

Not casually.

Not accidentally.

Directly.

Their eyes met.

For a brief second, time stretched.

Lin Xia felt it again.

That sharpness.

That unsettling awareness—

Like she was being seen.

Not glanced at.

Not judged.

Seen.

Her chest tightened slightly.

She looked away first.

“…What?”

The word slipped out before she could stop it.

Soft.

Defensive.

There was a pause.

Then Shen Yue spoke.

“You’re different.”

Lin Xia’s brows furrowed slightly.

“What does that even mean?”

No answer came immediately.

Shen Yue leaned back slightly in her chair, her gaze still lingering.

“Everyone else is loud,” she said calmly. “You’re quiet.”

“That’s not strange.”

“It is,” Shen Yue replied. “In a place like this.”

Lin Xia didn’t respond.

Because she didn’t like where this was going.

Didn’t like the way Shen Yue spoke—

Like she already understood something.

Like she was already digging beneath the surface.

“…You’re staring too much,” Lin Xia muttered.

Shen Yue didn’t deny it.

Instead—

A faint smile touched her lips.

Not warm.

Not friendly.

Just… knowing.

“I observe,” she said.

Lin Xia clicked her tongue softly and turned away.

“Then observe something else.”

Another pause.

Then—

“I could,” Shen Yue said quietly.

“But you’re more interesting.”

Across the room—

Zhao Meilin watched everything.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

She had noticed it too.

The new girl.

The attention she was getting.

And more importantly—

Where that attention was going.

Lin Xia.

A slow, displeased smile formed on her lips.

“That’s annoying…” she murmured.

Her friend leaned closer. “What is?”

Meilin’s gaze darkened slightly.

“That girl.”

Her eyes flicked toward Shen Yue.

“She doesn’t know her place yet.”

The bell rang.

Students stood, stretching, talking, moving again.

But Lin Xia stayed seated.

She didn’t like this.

Didn’t like the shift.

Didn’t like the way things were starting to move without her control.

And she especially didn’t like—

Shen Yue.

Because instinct told her one thing clearly:

That girl…

Was not someone she could easily manipulate.

As Shen Yue stood up, she paused briefly.

Then, without looking at Lin Xia, she said—

“You’re hiding something.”

Lin Xia’s body stiffened.

“I’m not.”

A quiet response came back.

“You are.”

A beat.

Then—

“I’ll figure it out.”

Shen Yue walked away.

Just like that.

Leaving nothing behind but those words.

And for the first time since she decided on revenge—

Lin Xia felt something unfamiliar.

Not fear.

Not anger.

But something close.

Uncertainty.

Her fingers curled slowly against her desk.

“…Try me,” she whispered under her breath.

Her eyes darkened.

Because if Shen Yue really wanted to get involved—

Then she would become part of the game too.

And Lin Xia didn’t care who got hurt anymore.

Not even her.
