Between Two Lives

Shen’s body lay still on the hospital bed.

Her breathing was calm, steady—just like someone finally at rest.

But inside her, nothing was at peace.

Even in sleep, her mind refused to settle.

Thoughts clashed against each other, restless and sharp, like waves crashing in a storm she couldn’t escape.

Lu Shen.

The name echoed again.

Closer than before.

Heavier.

She was supposed to accept it.

That this was her name.

Her life.

Her identity.

But the more she tried—

The more something inside her resisted.

This… isn’t me.

Her chest tightened painfully.

A strange suffocating feeling spread through her, as if her own existence was rejecting her.

Fragments flashed through her mind—

Broken.

Incomplete.

A woman crying.

Holding her tightly.

Warmth.

Fear.

Desperation.

Then—

Nothing.

Another image—

A staircase.

A sudden fall.

A sharp darkness.

And again—

Nothing.

Her breathing grew uneven.

An accident…?

The word felt wrong.

She didn’t remember what happened.

She didn’t know the truth.

But something deep inside her—

Something she couldn’t explain—

Refused to accept it.

No…

Her fingers tightened slightly against the bedsheet.

Even in sleep, her body reacted.

That wasn’t the truth.

The thought came quietly—

But it stayed.

And then—

Everything changed.

The warmth of the room disappeared.

The faint sounds faded.

Cold surrounded her.

Not painfully.

But completely.

When Shen opened her eyes—

She was no longer in the hospital.

There were no walls.

No ceiling.

No bed.

Only water.

Endless, silent water stretched in every direction.

Dark.

Heavy.

She couldn’t tell if she was standing—

Or floating.

Her heartbeat echoed loudly in the emptiness.

“Where… am I?” she whispered.

No answer came.

Only silence.

And yet—

She didn’t feel alone.

A faint uneasiness stirred inside her.

Not fear.

Not exactly.

Something deeper.

As if this place… was connected to her.

Suddenly—

A soft light appeared in the distance.

Faint.

Gentle.

But impossible to ignore.

Shen’s gaze locked onto it.

Her breath caught slightly.

And then—

She felt it.

A pull.

Not strong.

Not forceful.

But steady.

Persistent.

Calling her.

Her fingers slowly loosened.

Her body felt lighter.

Who…?

The question formed in her mind.

Who is there?

The light flickered softly.

As if responding.

Shen hesitated.

Her chest still felt heavy with confusion, doubt, and something she couldn’t name.

But that pull—

It felt familiar.

Too familiar to ignore.

Without realizing it—

She took a step forward.

The water didn’t ripple.

The space didn’t change.

Only the distance between her and the light grew smaller.

Step by step—

She moved closer.

Her heartbeat grew louder.

Her breathing slower.

And then—

She saw her.

A girl.

Standing within the faint glow of light.

Her figure was still.

Fragile.

Her head slightly lowered.

Her shoulders trembling.

And then—

Shen heard it.

A quiet, broken sound.

She was crying.

Shen stopped.

Her chest tightened again—

But this time, it wasn’t confusion.

It was pain.

A pain she didn’t understand—

But somehow felt.

“…Hey,” Shen called out softly.

Her voice felt distant, yet gentle.

“Why are you crying?”

The girl didn’t answer.

But her trembling didn’t stop.

And for a reason Shen couldn’t explain—

Her own eyes began to sting.

As if that sorrow—

Didn’t belong to just one of them.
