CH5: A Change in the Air

The morning sun rose bright and clear, chasing away the dark clouds and heavy rain that had covered the city the night before. The storm was gone, leaving behind fresh air and a peaceful atmosphere—but inside the grand mansion, something far more significant had changed. The cold, heavy tension that had filled the house since Fiona arrived seemed to have melted away, replaced by a quiet warmth and a new kind of understanding between the two people living there.

When Fiona woke up early that morning, the first thing she did was hurry to check on Gian. She had stayed with him until late into the night, making sure he was comfortable and that his wounds were doing well, and she had only returned to her room when she was certain he was resting soundly. Now, she knocked gently on the door of his private living room before stepping inside.

She found him already awake, sitting by the large window looking out at the garden. He was wearing simple, comfortable clothes instead of his usual formal suits, and his injured arm was carefully wrapped in the bandages she had put on. When he heard her footsteps, he turned his head, and for the first time, the look he gave her was not cold or distant. Instead, there was a softness in his dark eyes, and a small, gentle smile touched his lips—a smile that looked strange on his face, as if he was not used to doing it, but which made him look even more handsome and approachable.

“Good morning, Fiona,” Gian said, his voice calm and warm, nothing like the strict tone he used before. “You are up early.”

Fiona paused for a moment, surprised by his greeting and the way he looked at her. She had almost forgotten how he had looked at her the night before—with gratitude and something much deeper.

“Good morning, Gian,” she replied softly, walking closer to him. “I just came to check on you. How are you feeling? Does your arm hurt much? Are you in any pain?”

Gian shook his head slowly. “I feel much better. The pain is still there, but it is bearable. More importantly… I feel lighter than I have in years. Thank you again, Fiona. If it wasn’t for you, I would probably be sitting here alone, suffering in silence and refusing to let anyone help me. You did something that no one else has ever been able to do—you made me realize that I do not always have to be strong, and that it is okay to let others take care of me too.”

His words touched Fiona’s heart deeply. She walked over and gently examined his bandages, checking to make sure there was no fresh bleeding or swelling. As she did this, Gian watched her closely, his eyes fixed on her face, studying every little detail—the way her eyebrows furrowed slightly in concentration, the softness of her touch, and the kindness that seemed to shine from within her.

“From this day forward,” Gian said quietly, “things between us will be different. I know I have been strict, cold, and difficult to live with. I built walls around myself because I believed that was the only way to protect myself from being hurt or betrayed. I thought that if I kept everyone at a distance, I would remain safe and in control. But you have shown me that being closed off only leaves you empty and lonely. I was so busy protecting myself that I forgot how wonderful it feels to have someone who truly cares.”

He reached out slowly, hesitating for just a second, before gently taking her hand in his. His hand was large, strong, and slightly rough from years of hard work and responsibility, but his touch was incredibly gentle and careful, as if he was holding something very precious and fragile.

“I will not ask you to forget how I treated you before, and I know that trust takes time to build,” Gian continued. “But I promise you, Fiona, that I will do my best to be a better man, a better husband, and a better partner to you. I will still keep my promises and take care of everything I said I would, but now… I will also be here for you. I will listen to you, I will respect you, and I will make sure that you are happy and comfortable in this home. You are no longer just a woman I made an agreement with. You are my wife, and you are someone very special to me.”

Fiona felt her heart beating fast, and a warm feeling spread all through her body. She looked into his eyes, and for the first time, she did not see the powerful and feared businessman that everyone else knew. She saw a man who had been lonely for a very long time, a man who was learning how to open his heart, and a man who was trying his best to change for the better.

“Thank you, Gian,” Fiona said, her voice trembling slightly with emotion. “I am happy to hear you say that. And I promise you too… I will be here for you, just as you will be here for me. We are in this together now, and we will face everything side by side. I am not afraid anymore, and I am not lonely anymore. As long as we treat each other with kindness and respect, everything will be fine.”

Just then, Mrs. Cruz knocked softly on the door and entered the room, carrying a tray filled with breakfast. When she saw the way Gian was holding Fiona’s hand, and the soft expressions on both of their faces, she could not help but smile. She had worked for the family for many years, and she had never seen her employer look so peaceful, so happy, and so human.

“Good morning, Sir, Ma’am,” Mrs. Cruz said cheerfully. “I have prepared your breakfast. I made sure to prepare food that is healthy and easy to digest, especially for you, Sir, since your body still needs time to recover and heal.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Cruz,” Gian said with a smile. “And please… you do not have to be so formal and stiff around us anymore. You are part of this family, and you have taken care of us for so long. Feel free to be more relaxed and comfortable.”

Mrs. Cruz’s eyes widened in surprise and delight. She nodded happily, her heart full of joy to see the change in the atmosphere of the house. “Thank you, Sir. I am very happy to hear that. I will leave you two to enjoy your meal now.”

As Mrs. Cruz left the room, Gian gestured for Fiona to sit beside him at the small table. For the first time, they shared a meal not as two people bound by a contract, but as two people who were slowly getting to know each other, sharing thoughts, stories, and laughter.

Gian told her about his childhood—how he had lost his parents at a young age, how he had to work hard and fight for everything he had, and why he had learned to keep his distance from everyone. Fiona listened carefully, her heart aching for the pain and struggles he had gone through, and she shared her own stories too—about her simple life, her love for her father, and her dreams for the future.

As they talked and laughed together, Fiona realized that she was learning so many things about him that she never knew before. She learned that he loved quiet places and beautiful flowers, that he enjoyed reading books when he had free time, and that behind his serious face, he actually had a great sense of humor and a kind heart.

In the middle of their conversation, Gian suddenly stopped talking and looked at her with a serious but gentle expression.

“Fiona,” he said softly. “I know that we started this relationship because of a contract, and I know that you agreed to marry me only to save your family. But… I hope that one day, the feelings I am starting to have for you will be returned. I know it is too soon to ask for love, and I will never force you to feel something you do not feel. But I want you to know… I am falling for you, Fiona. Little by little, day by day, you are becoming the most important person in my life. And I will spend every single day proving to you that you made the right choice, and that being with me is something you will never regret.”

Fiona felt her cheeks turn pink, and her heart fluttered in a way it never had before. She looked at him, and she knew that she was also beginning to feel something special for him. The fear and uncertainty she felt before were gone, replaced by a growing affection and trust.

“I… I feel the same way, Gian,” Fiona admitted quietly, looking down shyly. “I am not sure exactly what it is yet, but I know that my feelings for you are changing too. You are no longer just the cold man I married. You are becoming my friend, my companion, and someone I care about very deeply. And I am happy that things have turned out this way.”

Gian’s face lit up with pure happiness, and for the first time, he let out a loud, genuine laugh—a sound that was deep, warm, and filled with joy. He gently pulled her closer to him, and though he did not say anything else, his actions spoke louder than words.

Outside, the sun continued to shine brightly, but inside that room, there was a light that was even brighter—the light of new love, new understanding, and a future that was looking more beautiful and promising with every passing moment.
