CHAPTER FOUR: Marked

The word wouldn’t leave her mind.

Marked.

Aria sat on the edge of her bed, staring at nothing, her fingers brushing absentmindedly against her wrist.

It didn’t look any different.

No symbol. No glow. Nothing.

And yet—

Ever since that moment in the classroom… something felt different.

Like a thread had been tied around her, pulling her toward something she didn’t understand.

Or someone.

“Okay, you’re officially zoning out.”

Aria blinked, snapping back to reality.

Lyra stood in front of her, arms crossed, one eyebrow raised.

“You’ve been staring at your hand for five minutes,” she added.

“Have not.”

“Have too.”

Aria sighed, dropping her hand. “I’m just… thinking.”

“About Kael?” Lyra said immediately.

Aria froze.

“…No.”

Lyra smiled slowly. “That wasn’t convincing.”

Before Aria could argue, the door swung open.

Riven walked in without knocking, followed by someone Aria hadn’t seen before.

“This is getting crowded,” Aria muttered.

“Relax,” Riven said, flopping into a chair. “We’re expanding the group.”

The new guy stepped forward, offering a small, easy smile.

“Elias,” he said. “I’m… kind of in between things.”

Aria frowned. “In between?”

“Hybrid,” Lyra explained softly. “Half human. Half vampire.”

Aria blinked.

“Is that… normal?”

Elias shrugged. “Not really. But I manage.”

There was something calm about him—steady in a way the others weren’t.

“You’ll like him,” Riven added. “He’s the least dramatic out of all of us.”

Lyra gave him a look. “That’s not true.”

“It is.”

“It’s not.”

Aria watched them, something warm flickering in her chest despite everything.

For the first time since arriving, she didn’t feel completely alone.

“Careful who you surround yourself with.”

The voice cut through the room like ice.

Aria turned.

Seraphine stood in the doorway.

Uninvited.

Of course.

Her dark eyes moved slowly over the group before settling on Aria.

“You’re making quite the impression,” she said.

Her tone wasn’t friendly.

It wasn’t openly hostile either.

It was worse.

Measured.

Like she was deciding something.

“Is that a problem?” Aria asked, before she could stop herself.

Lyra shot her a quick don’t look.

Too late.

Seraphine’s lips curved slightly.

“Not yet.”

She stepped closer, her presence instantly shifting the atmosphere.

“Just be careful,” she continued softly. “Some people here don’t understand what you are.”

Aria’s jaw tightened. “And you do?”

Seraphine leaned in just slightly.

“Better than you do.”

The tension snapped tight.

“Enough.”

Kael’s voice.

The room stilled instantly.

Aria turned.

He stood just inside the doorway, his gaze fixed on Seraphine.

Not angry.

But controlled.

Dangerously controlled.

Seraphine straightened, unimpressed—but she stepped back anyway.

“Relax,” she said lightly. “I’m just being… welcoming.”

Kael didn’t respond.

He just looked at her.

And that was enough.

After a moment, she smirked faintly and walked out.

But not before giving Aria one last look—

Sharp. Jealous. Warning.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Then Riven let out a breath. “Well, that was fun.”

“No, it wasn’t,” Lyra muttered.

Elias glanced between them. “She doesn’t like you.”

“Noticed,” Aria said dryly.

“Come with me.”

Aria looked up.

Kael.

He wasn’t looking at anyone else.

Just her.

Her heart skipped.

“Where?” she asked.

“Outside.”

That was all he said before turning and walking away.

Not even checking if she’d follow.

Which—annoyingly—she did.

The courtyard was quieter now, the sky dimming into soft shades of blue and gray.

Aria stopped a few steps behind him.

“You could at least explain—”

He turned suddenly.

Too close.

Her breath caught.

“You shouldn’t provoke her,” he said.

Aria frowned. “She started it.”

“She’s a vampire.”

“And?”

“And she won’t play fair.”

There was something in his voice now—something protective.

It made her chest tighten.

“I can handle myself,” she said.

Kael stepped closer.

“Can you?” he asked quietly.

The question wasn’t mocking.

It was serious.

Too serious.

Aria hesitated.

“…I don’t know.”

The honesty surprised both of them.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then—

Kael reached out.

Slowly.

Like he was giving her time to pull away.

But she didn’t.

His fingers closed gently around her wrist.

The same place she had been staring at earlier.

Warm.

Steady.

But there was something else—

A faint pulse.

Not hers.

His.

Aria’s breath hitched.

“What is that?” she whispered.

Kael’s eyes softened slightly.

“That,” he said, “is the mark.”

Her heart skipped.

“But I don’t see anything.”

“You won’t,” he replied. “Not yet.”

His thumb brushed lightly over her skin.

And suddenly—

Her chest tightened.

A strange warmth spread through her, sharp and unfamiliar.

Her heartbeat quickened.

And for a second—

Everything else faded.

Just him.

Just this.

Kael stilled slightly, like he felt it too.

His jaw tightened.

“I shouldn’t be this close,” he muttered.

“Then why are you?” she asked softly.

He didn’t answer immediately.

His gaze dropped briefly to her lips—

Then back to her eyes.

Tension.

Thick. Unavoidable.

“Because it’s already done,” he said quietly.

Aria’s breath caught.

“What is?”

He hesitated.

Then—

“I’ve already chosen you.”

The words landed heavier than anything else.

Not dramatic.

Not loud.

But certain.

Final.

“And where I come from…” he added, his voice lower now, “we only choose once.”

Aria’s heart pounded.

“You don’t even know me.”

“I don’t need to.”

That should have scared her.

Maybe it did.

But something deeper—

Something she couldn’t explain—

Felt… drawn to him.

Like this wasn’t new.

Like it had always been there.

“You don’t get to decide that alone,” she said, even though her voice was softer now.

A small, almost invisible smile touched his lips.

“Maybe not.”

His hand slowly loosened around her wrist.

But he didn’t pull away completely.

“Then decide,” he said.

Her breath hitched.

“Decide what?”

“If you’re going to fight it…” he said quietly, “or feel it too.”

Aria didn’t answer.

Because the truth?

She already felt it.

And that was the most dangerous part of all.
