The movie set of The Jade Phoenix was a chaotic mess of tangled cables, weeping assistants, and the smell of expensive ozone. It was one of the most expensive productions in history, but today, it felt more like a morgue.
Director Chen sat in his folding chair, his face buried in his hands. "It’s over. The investors are pulling out. We’ve lost three lead actresses in two weeks. They just... they stop breathing in the middle of a scene and fall into a coma. The doctors say it's 'exhaustion,' but I know what I saw."
He looked at the monitor. The newest lead, Tang Xuan, was sitting in her trailer. Even through the screen, she looked like a wilting lily. Her skin was a sickly gray, and her eyes were glazed.
"Director," a voice said—cool, professional, and entirely out of place.
Chen looked up. Standing there was Lin Mei. She looked different than she had two days ago. Her suit was pressed, her eyes were sharp, and she carried a thermos as if it were a scepter.
"Lin Mei? You’re supposed to be in a legal hearing!" Chen gasped.
"The hearing was... resolved," Mei said with a tight, knowing smile. "I’m here because I heard you have a production problem. And I happen to represent a 'Consultant' who specializes in impossible problems."
"Consultant? From which firm?"
"The Bitter Moon," Mei replied.
The Hidden Exorcism
At that moment, in the shadows of the rafters high above the set, Yue Yin was crouched like a panther. Beside her, Unit 02 was wearing a pair of "noise-canceling headphones" Xiao Bo had modified to detect spiritual frequencies.
"Master," Unit 02 whispered. "The smell is strongest behind the main lighting rig. It’s oily. It smells like a grave that’s been sprayed with perfume."
"I see it," Yue Yin murmured.
Below them, Tang Xuan stepped onto the set for the climactic scene. As the cameras started to roll, a dark, viscous smudge of energy began to descend from the ceiling. To the human crew, it was just a flickering shadow. To Yue Yin, it was a Soul-Siphoning Parasite, a crude but effective curse sent by a rival studio.
"Xiao Bo," Yue Yin whispered into her earpiece.
"I’m in the system, Master," Bo’s voice crackled from the basement miles away. "I’ve looped the security footage for the next sixty seconds. No one will see anything but a 'lens flare'."
"Good."
Yue Yin didn't use a sword. She didn't shout an incantation. She reached into her hoodie and pulled out a small spray bottle filled with a dark, concentrated liquid—The Midnight Purge.
She misted the air.
The fine spray caught the light, turning into a cloud of violet sparks. When the sparks touched the dark parasite, the creature let out a silent, soul-piercing shriek. It shriveled instantly, turning from a predatory cloud into a handful of dry, black ash that drifted harmlessly into the ventilation ducts.
Tang Xuan, who had been about to collapse, suddenly took a deep, gasping breath. The color returned to her face. She looked up at the rafters, her eyes meeting the violet glow of Yue Yin’s for a split second before the "Makeup Artist" disappeared into the dark.
The First Ally
Ten minutes later, Tang Xuan delivered the best performance of her career. The set exploded in applause. Director Chen was weeping with joy.
"She’s back! It’s a miracle!"
In the trailer, Tang Xuan sat alone, trembling. There was a cup on her vanity table that hadn't been there before. It was a simple black cup with a crescent moon logo.
She took a sip.
It was warm, rich, and tasted like... victory.
"You're awake," a voice said.
Tang Xuan jumped. Yue Yin was standing by the door, now wearing a simple "Catering" vest.
"Who are you?" the actress whispered. "Did you... did you save me?"
"I am a merchant," Yue Yin said, her voice a low vibration. "I saved your life because your fame is a resource I intend to use. You were being eaten by a rival's greed, Tang Xuan. If you want to stay alive in this industry, you need more than a bodyguard. You need a Patron."
Yue Yin slid a business card across the table. It was black, with no name—only the address of the café.
"If you want to keep that glow," Yue Yin said, "come to the Bitter Moon. Bring your most influential friends. Tell them you've found the secret to 'Eternal Youth and Focus'. But never, under any circumstances, mention my name to the press."
"Why?" Tang Xuan asked, clutching the cup.
"Because," Yue Yin said, her form beginning to blur into the shadows of the trailer. "The press loves a tragedy. I prefer a legend."
The Investigator’s Curiosity
Outside the studio gates, Xing Jian leaned against his car. He watched as a "Catering Van" with a faint violet glow on its bumper drove past him.
His phone buzzed. It was a message from the Bureau HQ.

Xing Jian looked at the black-and-white newspaper in his hand. He wasn't reading it. He was thinking about the taste of the amber tea.
"You're playing a dangerous game, Yue Yin," he whispered to the empty street. "You're not just brewing coffee. You're brewing a revolution."
He pulled out his phone and typed a message to his superior: 'Investigation into the Bitter Moon Café: Suspect is a Low-Level threat. No further action needed for now.'
He deleted the draft. He knew he was lying. He knew he should report her.
Instead, he typed: 'Continuing solo surveillance. Will monitor for further anomalies.'
He got into his car and followed the van. He didn't know it yet, but he wasn't just investigating a demon. He was following the only person who made the world feel like it was finally in high definition.
