CHAPTER 4:
Liora’s heart wouldn’t slow down.
It was too loud.
Too fast.
And the worst part?
She wasn’t stepping away.
Kael stood in front of her now—close enough that she could see every detail in his face. The sharp lines, the calm expression… the eyes that never seemed to look away.
“You shouldn’t be here,” she said, though her voice lacked the strength it had before.
“Why?” he asked.
“Because you don’t know me.”
“I told you,” he replied, unfazed. “I know enough.”
Liora shook her head. “You keep saying that like it means something.”
“It does.”
Silence fell between them again.
Heavy.
Charged.
Dangerous.
“You showed up at my house,” she continued, trying to regain control. “That’s not normal.”
“I didn’t say I was.”
That made her pause.
There was no hesitation in his voice.
No attempt to deny it.
And somehow… that honesty unsettled her more than anything else.
“You don’t think this is weird?” she asked.
“I think you’re pretending it is.”
Her brows furrowed. “Pretending?”
“You felt it the moment you saw me,” he said quietly. “And you haven’t stopped thinking about it since.”
Her chest tightened.
“You don’t get to tell me what I feel.”
“I’m not telling you,” he said. “I’m reminding you.”
That hit deeper than it should have.
Liora looked away, her thoughts spiraling.
Why did his words feel so… true?
Why couldn’t she just ignore him?
“Say I believe you,” she said after a moment. “What then?”
Kael stepped closer.
This time, there was no space left between them.
“You stop running,” he said.
Her breath caught.
“I wasn’t running.”
“You left.”
“I needed space.”
“And now?”
His voice dropped slightly.
“Do you still?”
Liora hesitated.
That was all it took.
Because in that moment—
She didn’t know.
And that scared her.
“I should go inside,” she said quickly, stepping to the side.
But before she could move past him—
His hand caught her wrist.
Not tight.
Not forceful.
But firm enough to stop her.
Everything in her body froze.
Slowly, her gaze dropped to where his fingers touched her skin.
Then back up to his face.
“Kael—”
“Stay.”
One word.
Low.
Quiet.
But it carried weight.
Too much weight.
“You can’t just—”
“Stay,” he repeated, softer this time.
Her heartbeat stumbled.
This was wrong.
This was all wrong.
And yet—
She wasn’t pulling away.
“Why?” she whispered.
For the first time—
Something in his expression shifted.
Not fully.
Not enough to soften him.
But enough to feel… real.
“Because I’ve been looking for you,” he said.
Her breath caught.
The words settled between them, heavy and confusing.
“Looking for me?” she repeated.
“That feeling,” he continued. “It doesn’t happen for no reason.”
Liora stared at him.
Trying to understand.
Trying to make sense of something that didn’t make sense at all.
“You don’t even know who I am,” she said again, quieter now.
“I will.”
His grip on her wrist loosened slightly.
Not letting go.
But giving her a choice.
And that made it worse.
Because now—
If she stayed, it was on her.
“You’re making this sound like something it’s not,” she said, though her voice lacked conviction.
“And what do you think it is?”
“I think…” she hesitated. “I think you’re used to getting your way.”
A pause.
Then—
“You think this is about control?”
She didn’t answer.
Because part of her did.
But another part—
A quieter, more dangerous part—
Wasn’t so sure.
Kael released her wrist.
Finally.
But instead of stepping back—
He stayed right where he was.
“You can walk away,” he said.
Simple.
Direct.
“No one’s stopping you.”
Liora’s chest rose and fell unevenly.
This was her chance.
Her way out.
All she had to do was turn around… open the gate… and go inside.
End of story.
Simple.
So why wasn’t she moving?
Her gaze lifted to his again.
And there it was.
That pull.
Stronger now.
Harder to ignore.
“You said this doesn’t end here,” she murmured.
“I did.”
“Then what is this?”
Another pause.
Another moment where everything seemed to hang in the air.
Then—
“This,” he said quietly, “is where you decide if you’re afraid of it… or part of it.”
Her heartbeat pounded in her ears.
Afraid?
Or part of it?
Liora swallowed.
She didn’t know the answer.
And that was the problem.
Because standing here…
Looking at him…
Feeling this—
It didn’t feel like something she could just walk away from anymore.
And deep down…
She was starting to realize something she wasn’t ready to admit.
She wasn’t just being pulled into this.
She was stepping into it.
On her own.
