A Bargain Beneath the Waves

Chapter Four: A Bargain Beneath the Waves

Morning came without sunlight.

Dark clouds smothered the sky, turning the ocean into a restless expanse of gray. The wind had sharpened overnight, tugging at sails and snapping ropes like warning whispers.

Seraphine stood at the helm, her gaze fixed ahead.

“Storm’s building fast,” her navigator muttered.

“I can see that,” she replied flatly.

But this wasn’t just a storm.

She could feel it.

Something heavier. Deeper.

Wrong.

“Captain!” another crew member shouted from the rail. “The water—look!”

Seraphine turned.

The sea wasn’t moving naturally.

It pulsed.

Like a heartbeat.

Her expression darkened.

“Everyone stay sharp,” she ordered. “No one goes near the edge unless I say so.”

A sudden crash rocked the ship.

The crew stumbled, curses filling the air.

“What the hell was that?!”

Before anyone could answer—

Something slammed into the hull again.

Harder.

The ship tilted violently.

Seraphine grabbed the wheel, steadying herself as her eyes scanned the waters.

Then she saw it.

Shapes.

Multiple.

Circling.

Fast.

“Get the weapons!” she snapped. “Now!”

The crew scrambled, grabbing harpoons and blades as the ocean erupted around them. Dark figures broke the surface—sleek, scaled, and far too many.

Not sirens.

Something else.

One leapt onto the deck.

Its body twisted unnaturally, claws scraping against wood as it lunged toward the nearest crew member.

A scream cut through the air.

Seraphine didn’t hesitate.

She drew her blade and moved.

Fast.

Her strike was precise, cutting across the creature’s side. It shrieked, recoiling, but didn’t fall.

More followed.

Climbing. Crawling. Attacking.

The ship became chaos.

“Hold your ground!” she shouted, blocking another strike before driving her blade forward.

Blood—dark and almost black—splattered across the deck.

But they kept coming.

And then—

A voice echoed from below.

“Pirate!”

Seraphine froze for a fraction of a second.

The siren.

Another crash shook the ship, harder than before. Water surged over the deck as one of the creatures slammed into her from the side, knocking her back.

She hit the wood hard, air knocked from her lungs.

The creature lunged again—

But suddenly stopped.

Its body stiffened.

Then—

It was dragged backward.

Into the sea.

The water churned violently, swallowing it whole.

The other creatures paused.

Just for a second.

Then, one by one—

They retreated.

Slipping back beneath the waves.

Vanishing.

The storm didn’t stop.

But the attack did.

The deck fell into stunned silence, broken only by heavy breathing and the distant roar of thunder.

Seraphine pushed herself up slowly, her grip tightening around her sword.

She didn’t need to guess.

She knew.

Without a word, she turned and headed below deck.

Fast.

The air felt colder than before as she reached the hold.

The siren stood inside his cell, chains loose but still holding. His chest rose and fell steadily, but his eyes were sharper than ever.

“You called them,” she said.

Not a question.

He didn’t deny it.

“They came for me.”

Her jaw tightened.

“You could have let them kill us.”

“I could have.”

Silence.

Rain hammered against the ship above them.

“Why didn’t you?” she asked.

He stepped closer to the bars.

“Because you’re not dead yet.”

That wasn’t an answer.

Not really.

Seraphine stepped forward, her voice lowering.

“What do you want?”

For the first time—

He smiled.

Not mocking.

Not cruel.

Something else.

“Freedom.”

Her grip on her sword tightened.

“You’re in no position to—”

“I can protect your ship.”

She stopped.

The words hung in the air.

“A storm like this?” he continued. “Creatures like those? They won’t stop. Not until they take me back.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“And you expect me to just… let you go?”

“No.”

He stepped even closer.

Chains shifted.

Eyes locked.

“I expect you to make a deal.”

Seraphine studied him carefully.

Every instinct told her not to trust him.

But—

The ship had nearly been torn apart.

And something told her…

That was only the beginning.

“What kind of deal?” she asked slowly.

His voice dropped, quieter now.

“Take me with you.”

She blinked.

“You’re already on my ship.”

“Not as a prisoner.”

A pause.

Then—

“As something else.”

The meaning was clear.

Seraphine let out a quiet breath, her mind racing.

“You expect me to trust you.”

“I expect you to survive.”

Another crash of thunder.

The ship groaned.

Time was running out.

Seraphine stepped closer to the bars.

Close enough to see every detail of his face.

Every flicker in his eyes.

“If you betray me,” she said softly, “I won’t hesitate.”

“I know.”

She held his gaze for a long moment.

Then—

“Fine.”

The word was quiet.

But final.

The air shifted instantly.

Something unseen.

Unspoken.

The siren exhaled slowly, something almost like relief crossing his features.

Seraphine turned, already moving.

“I’ll have the chains loosened,” she said. “But don’t mistake this for trust.”

Behind her, his voice followed.

“I won’t.”

She paused at the stairs, glancing back just once.

“And one more thing,” she added.

His eyes met hers.

“No more surprises.”

A faint smile.

“That depends.”

Seraphine rolled her eyes slightly, heading back above deck.

But this time—

The storm didn’t feel like just a threat.

It felt like the beginning of something far worse.

And far more dangerous.

Than either of them were ready for.
