EPISODE 4: “CLOSE ENOUGH TO BURN”

The night after the assassination attempt did not

feel like peace.

It felt like silence holding its breath.

Arjun stood on the palace balcony, wind pulling at the

edges of his robe. Below, the royal gardens shimmered

under moonlight like a quiet illusion.

Behind him, footsteps approached.

He didn’t turn immediately.

He already knew who it was.

Lucian.

“Still awake,” the Crown Prince said.

Arjun replied calmly, “So are you.”

A pause.

Lucian stepped beside him, resting one hand lightly

on the balcony railing. Too close again—but this time,

there was no crowd to hide it.

No politics.

Only distance… or the lack of it.

“You saved my life yesterday,” Lucian said.

Arjun didn’t look at him. “It was a logical decision.”

Lucian tilted his head slightly. “Everything you do

sounds like logic.”

A faint pause.

“…Not fear. Not ambition. Just logic.”

Arjun finally glanced at him. “Is that a problem?”

Lucian smiled slightly. “It is unfamiliar.”

A system notification flickered in Arjun’s vision.

💥 TARGET EMOTION UPDATE

LUCIAN: INTEREST + FOCUS INCREASING

Arjun ignored it.

But Lucian didn’t.

He stepped closer.

Now there was barely space between them.

“If I ordered you to stay in my quarters tonight,”

Lucian said softly, “would you refuse?”

Kian, who had just arrived at the corridor entrance,

nearly choked on air.

“What?!”

Arjun didn’t react immediately.

Then calmly: “That depends on whether it’s an

order… or a trap.”

Lucian’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“…Both,” he admitted.

Silence.

Then—

Arjun nodded once. “Then I refuse.”

Kian visibly relaxed.

Lucian, however, only smiled.

Like that answer pleased him more than agreement

would have.

“Good,” Lucian said. “You think before obeying.”

He turned slightly, walking toward the door.

“But you will still come.”

Arjun frowned. “That wasn’t a request.”

Lucian glanced back over his shoulder.

“No,” he said softly. “It was certainty.”

🏰 ROYAL CHAMBERS — LATER

Arjun didn’t come willingly.

He came because guards “escorted” him.

Kian was stopped at the door.

“This is bullshit,” Kian whispered angrily as soldiers

blocked him. “We’re literally being separated now?!”

Ethan stood in the hallway.

Silent.

Watching.

Kian met his gaze.

And something in Ethan’s expression shifted—barely

visible.

“Stay back,” Ethan said coldly.

Kian scoffed. “Or what? You’ll kill me?”

A pause.

Ethan answered quietly:

“If necessary.”

That was worse than anger.

It was certainty.

Kian swallowed.

“…You people are insane.”

Ethan turned away without replying.

🌙 INSIDE LUCIAN’S QUARTERS

The room was large, dimly lit, and far too quiet.

Arjun stood near the center.

Lucian poured wine slowly, not offering any.

“You adapt quickly,” Lucian said.

Arjun replied, “I survive quickly.”

Lucian handed him a sealed letter.

Arjun hesitated before taking it.

“What is this?”

“A list of nobles who wanted me dead,” Lucian said

calmly.

Arjun’s eyes sharpened slightly. “And you’re showing

me this… why?”

Lucian leaned back against the table.

“Because I want to know how you would handle them.”

A pause.

Then softly:

“If I let you choose one name… who dies first?”

Arjun didn’t answer immediately.

He read.

Observed.

Calculated.

Then said, “The one closest to you.”

Lucian’s eyes darkened slightly.

“Why?”

“Because betrayal is always closest,” Arjun said.

Silence.

The air shifted.

Lucian stared at him for a long moment.

Then—

He laughed softly.

Not loud.

Not amused.

Something deeper.

“…You are dangerous,” he said again.

Arjun met his gaze. “So are you.”

A beat.

Then Lucian stepped forward.

Slow.

Controlled.

Stopping only when there was almost no space left.

“You don’t fear me,” Lucian said quietly.

Arjun replied, “Fear is inefficient.”

Lucian’s gaze dropped briefly to his lips.

Just for a moment.

Then back to his eyes.

“That is becoming a problem,” he murmured.

Arjun frowned slightly. “For who?”

Lucian answered honestly:

“For me.”

🖤 OUTSIDE — UNKNOWN HALLWAY

Kian was being led away when he suddenly felt

a chill.

Ethan stood behind him again.

Closer now.

“Kian,” Ethan said.

Kian turned slowly. “What now?”

Ethan studied him for a moment.

Then quietly:

“You are loud.”

Kian blinked. “Excuse me?”

A pause.

“…But you are not lying,” Ethan added.

Kian frowned. “Is that supposed to be a

compliment?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

Instead, he stepped closer.

For the first time—

Kian realized Ethan wasn’t just cold.

He was watching him.

Carefully.

Like Arjun was with Lucian.

“…What do you want from me?” Kian asked

cautiously.

Ethan replied:

“Nothing yet.”

Then, after a pause:

“…But that may change.”
