Chapter 5

The third scene came faster than expected.

Too fast.

Jason didn’t like patterns that sped up.

It meant confidence.

Or urgency.

Neither was good.

The call came just after midnight.

Adam didn’t even bother complaining this time.

That alone said enough.

This location was different.

No alley.

No abandoned building.

A house.

Lived in.

Warm light still glowed from the windows when they arrived, flickering under the flash of police cars.

Jason stepped out first.

His eyes moved quickly.

Front door.

Open.

No signs of forced entry.

Again.

Adam walked up beside him, quieter than usual.

“…You feel that?” he asked.

Jason didn’t look at him.

“Yes.”

Because this one—

Felt closer.

They entered the house.

The air inside was thick.

Not with smell.

With silence.

The kind that shouldn’t exist in a place like this.

A television played softly in the living room.

Unwatched.

Unnoticed.

Paused in time.

Jason walked past it without slowing.

The officers inside didn’t speak.

They just pointed.

Down the hallway.

Jason moved first.

Adam followed.

Step by step.

Until—

They reached it.

The bedroom.

Jason stopped at the doorway.

His expression didn’t change.

But something behind his eyes did.

“…No,” Adam whispered.

Because this time—

It wasn’t just a teddy.

It was a scene.

A display.

The bed was neatly arranged.

Too neatly.

And sitting at the center—

The teddy.

Larger than before.

Cleaner.

Almost new.

But around it—

Everything else was wrong.

The stitching.

More precise.

More controlled.

More intentional.

Jason stepped inside slowly.

This one—

This one was different.

Not rushed.

Not messy.

Calculated.

Perfect.

Adam stayed near the door for a moment.

“…He’s improving,” he said quietly.

Jason didn’t respond.

He was looking at something else.

The positioning.

The angle.

The alignment of everything in the room.

The way the teddy sat—

Facing the mirror.

Adam followed his gaze.

“…Why the mirror?”

Jason moved closer.

Step by step.

Until he stood beside the bed.

His reflection stared back at him.

Along with—

The teddy.

A pause.

Then—

Jason’s eyes shifted slightly.

“…No.”

Adam frowned. “What?”

Jason didn’t answer immediately.

He leaned slightly to the side.

The reflection changed.

And then—

He saw it.

Something small.

Something almost hidden.

On the back of the teddy.

A stitch.

Different.

Out of place.

“…There,” Jason said quietly.

Adam stepped closer. “What is it?”

Jason’s voice dropped.

“It’s not part of the pattern.”

Adam frowned. “So?”

Jason looked at him.

“It’s new.”

Adam’s expression shifted.

“…A change?”

Jason nodded once.

Adam exhaled slowly.

“So he’s not just repeating anymore.”

Jason turned back to the mirror.

“No.”

A pause.

“He’s evolving the message.”

Adam crossed his arms.

“…Or correcting it.”

Jason didn’t reply.

Because that thought—

Had already crossed his mind.

An officer approached them carefully.

“Detectives… we found something else.”

Jason didn’t look away. “What?”

The officer hesitated.

“There was someone here.”

Adam stiffened slightly. “What do you mean ‘was’?”

The officer swallowed.

“A neighbor reported seeing a man leaving the house.”

Silence.

Jason’s focus sharpened instantly.

“Description?”

“Tall. Hooded. Couldn’t see the face.”

Adam let out a breath. “Of course.”

Jason turned slightly.

“Time?”

“Ten minutes before we arrived.”

That—

Changed everything.

Jason moved immediately.

“Where is the neighbor?”

“Outside.”

Jason didn’t wait.

He walked past them, heading straight out.

Adam followed quickly.

“…Ten minutes?” Adam said under his breath. “We just missed him.”

Jason’s pace didn’t slow.

“No.”

Adam frowned. “No?”

Jason stepped outside.

Rain hit his face instantly.

Cold.

Sharp.

He scanned the street.

Dark.

Empty.

Watching.

“He wanted us to miss him,” Jason said.

Adam stopped beside him.

“…You’re saying that was planned too?”

Jason’s eyes moved slowly across the area.

Every corner.

Every shadow.

“Yes.”

Adam ran a hand through his hair.

“This guy…”

Jason’s voice stayed low.

“He’s controlling the timing.”

Adam glanced at him.

“…Then what’s next?”

Jason didn’t answer right away.

Because the answer—

Was already forming.

Three scenes.

Three patterns.

Three messages.

And now—

A change.

A correction.

Jason’s gaze lifted slightly.

Somewhere out there—

The killer was watching again.

Waiting.

Adjusting.

Learning.

“He’s getting closer,” Jason said.

Adam didn’t like the way that sounded.

“Closer to what?”

Jason’s eyes didn’t move.

“To the point.”

Adam stayed silent.

Because whatever that point was—

It wasn’t going to be simple.

And it wasn’t going to end quickly.

The rain kept falling.

Steady.

Relentless.

Just like the case.

And somewhere—

Hidden in the dark—

The next move was already set.
