Chapter 4

After that day… things changed.

Not in a way others could see.

But between them—everything felt closer.

Too close.

Zara had started noticing little things.

The way Arin looked at her when she wasn’t paying attention.

The way his tone softened when he said her name.

The way silence between them no longer felt empty… but full.

Of something neither of them had named yet.

That evening, the sky was painted in soft shades of orange and pink.

Classes were over. Most students had already left.

But Zara stayed back.

And somehow… so did he.

“You’re still here?” Arin asked, walking toward her.

“So are you,” she replied.

“Fair enough,” he smiled, sitting beside her.

There was no rush to speak.

Just the quiet sound of the wind… and two hearts beating a little louder than usual.

“Zara,” he said after a while.

“Hmm?”

“Can I ask you something?”

She nodded.

“Do you ever feel like… something is changing?”

Her fingers tightened slightly around her notebook.

“Changing?” she repeated.

“Yeah,” he said softly. “Like… things aren’t the same anymore.”

She knew what he meant.

She had felt it too.

Every single day.

“I don’t know,” she whispered.

That was a lie.

But saying the truth felt… too risky.

He looked at her.

“Liar.”

She froze. “What?”

“You do know,” he said quietly.

Her heart started racing.

“Arin…”

He didn’t let her finish.

“Then say it,” he said.

Silence.

The kind that makes everything louder.

“Say what?” she asked, even though she already knew.

He leaned a little closer.

“Whatever you’ve been hiding.”

Her breath hitched.

This was it.

This moment.

“I…” she started.

But the words got stuck.

Because once said… nothing would be the same.

He waited.

Not pushing.

Not moving.

Just… there.

“I think…” she tried again.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

And then—

Footsteps.

Voices from the corridor.

The moment broke.

Zara immediately looked away, her heart still racing.

“I should go,” she said quickly, standing up.

“Zara—”

But she didn’t stop.

Because she knew—

If she stayed one second longer…

she might actually say it.

Arin watched her leave.

His jaw tightened slightly.

He ran a hand through his hair, frustrated.

“So close…” he muttered.

And somewhere between what was said…

and what wasn’t—

their feelings became even more real.

But still…

Zara didn’t stop walking.

Not until she was far enough…

far enough from him, from that moment, from everything she almost said.

Her heart was still racing.

“Why couldn’t I say it?” she whispered to herself.

Because she knew the answer.

If she said it… everything would change.

“Zara!”

She froze.

That voice.

Slowly, she turned around.

Arin was standing there… slightly out of breath, like he had rushed just to catch her.

“Why did you leave?” he asked.

She looked away. “I had to go.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Silence.

The same tension from before returned.

Only stronger now.

“You were about to say something,” he said, stepping closer.

“I wasn’t.”

“Don’t lie.”

Her chest tightened.

“Why does it matter so much?” she asked, her voice softer now.

He didn’t hesitate this time.

“Because you matter.”

That one sentence…

It hit deeper than anything else.

Zara looked at him, her eyes searching for something—fear, doubt, hesitation.

But there was none.

Only honesty.

“Then you say it first,” she said quietly.

His expression changed slightly.

“Say what?”

“You know what.”

A pause.

For the first time…

Arin looked unsure.

“You’re not making this easy,” he said with a small, nervous laugh.

“Neither are you,” she replied.

They stood there, facing each other.

No distractions.

No interruptions.

Just truth… waiting to be spoken.

He took a deep breath.

Then stepped closer.

Close enough that she could hear his heartbeat… or maybe it was her own.

“I don’t like it when you talk to someone else,” he said.

“I think about you more than I should.”

“I notice things I never used to.”

Zara’s heart skipped.

“And when you walked away just now…” he continued, his voice softer,

“…it didn’t feel right.”

He looked straight into her eyes.

No more hiding.

“I think…”

He paused.

Then finally said it—

“I like you, Zara.”

Everything went quiet.

No thoughts.

No noise.

Just that one sentence echoing in her mind.

She didn’t look away this time.

Didn’t run.

Didn’t hide.

“Say something,” he said softly.

Zara smiled a little.

Nervous. Real.

“I was trying to say the same thing,” she admitted.

For a second, he just stared at her.

Like he needed to hear it again.

“I like you too,” she said.

And just like that…

All the confusion, the silence, the almost moments—

finally made sense.

A small laugh escaped him.

“Finally,” he said.

She rolled her eyes slightly. “You could’ve said it earlier.”

“So could you.”

They both smiled.

Not big, dramatic smiles.

Just quiet ones…

that meant everything.

And for the first time—

it wasn’t just a feeling anymore.

It was real.

💖 And just like that… their story truly begins.

unspoken.
