THE SPACE BETWEEN US (Taekook)
The train moved like a secret meant to be kept.
Soft vibrations ran through the velvet seats,
blending with the quiet hum of motion. Outside,
the evening sky burned gold and amber—but
inside the private carriage, the air felt colder.
Controlled.
Taehyung sat by the window, a book resting in his hands.
Untouched.
He hadn’t turned the page in minutes.
Not since Jungkook walked in.
He could feel him—even without looking. That presence. Heavy. Certain. Like someone who didn’t ask for space, but took it.
Across from him, Jungkook leaned back, one leg crossed over the other, dressed in dark elegance that made him look like he belonged to shadows rather than light. Rings glinted on his fingers as he absentmindedly tapped against the armrest.
Watching.
Always watching.
“You’ve improved,” Jungkook said casually.
Taehyung didn’t react.
“At ignoring me.”
A pause.
Then, quietly, Taehyung spoke. “You’re not worth the effort.”
The words were sharp—but controlled. Too controlled.
Jungkook smiled.
Not offended.
Never offended.
“You used to be better at lying.”
That—
That made Taehyung’s fingers tighten slightly around the book.
Jungkook noticed.
Of course he did.
Silence fell again, thick and stretching, but this time it wasn’t empty. It was full of things unsaid. Of history neither of them was ready to speak aloud.
Jungkook shifted forward.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
“Tell me something,” he said, voice lower now. “If I walked out right now… would you stop me?”
Taehyung’s gaze stayed fixed on the book.
But he didn’t answer.
Didn’t deny it either.
Jungkook let out a quiet breath—something almost like a laugh.
“Thought so.”
The distance between them felt smaller now.
Not physically.
But something had shifted.
Jungkook’s hand moved first.
It always did.
His fingers brushed against Taehyung’s on the seat between them—light, almost teasing. Testing.
Taehyung froze.
The reaction was instant.
But he didn’t pull away.
That was the problem.
That had always been the problem.
“You never learn,” Taehyung murmured.
His voice was soft.
But it carried weight.
Jungkook leaned closer, just enough that his presence felt overwhelming now.
“And you never stop me.”
Their fingers touched again.
This time, it wasn’t accidental.
Jungkook let them linger, then slowly—deliberately—intertwined them with Taehyung’s.
Firm.
Certain.
Claiming.
Taehyung inhaled quietly.
Still not looking at him.
Still not pulling away.
“Let go,” he said.
But there was no force behind it.
Jungkook’s grip tightened just slightly.
“Make me.”
Silence.
The kind that pressed in from all sides.
Taehyung finally turned his head.
Their eyes met.
And just for a second—
Everything else disappeared.
“You haven’t changed,” Taehyung said.
Jungkook tilted his head, a faint smile playing on his lips. “Neither have you.”
Another pause.
But this one felt… different.
Softer.
More dangerous.
Because neither of them was pretending anymore.
The train slowed slightly, the outside world blurring into darker shades as night approached.
Inside, their hands remained locked together.
Unhidden.
Unspoken.
Unresolved.
Jungkook leaned back again, still holding on, like letting go was never an option.
“You ran last time,” he said quietly.
Taehyung’s expression flickered.
Barely.
But enough.
“I didn’t run.”
“You disappeared.”
The words hung between them.
Heavy.
Real.
For the first time, Taehyung didn’t have an immediate response.
And that silence—
That hesitation—
Told Jungkook everything he needed to know.
His thumb brushed lightly against Taehyung’s hand.
Not teasing this time.
Not playful.
Something softer.
Something dangerous in a completely different way.
“Well,” Jungkook murmured, his voice almost a promise now, “this time… I won’t let you.”
Taehyung didn’t pull away.
Didn’t argue.
But his grip—
Ever so slightly—
Tightened.
And that was where it began.
Not with love.
Not with forgiveness.
But with something unfinished…
finally refusing to stay buried.
