After Aarav’s confession, the house stopped pretending.
It was no longer subtle with its presence. No longer hiding behind flickering lights or distant footsteps.
Now it was direct.
Waiting.
Listening.
And aware that the truth was finally close enough to touch.
Siya didn’t sleep that night.
Neither did Aarav.
But for very different reasons.
Siya stayed in the bedroom, sitting on the edge of the bed, replaying his words over and over.
“I was here before.”
“I saw what happened to her.”
Aarav stayed in the corridor.
Outside the locked room.
Like something inside had finally pulled him back to where he never wanted to stand again.
At exactly 12:07 a.m., the house responded.
The hallway light dimmed until it was almost nothing.
And then—
the sound returned.
Not bangles this time.
Not footsteps.
A knock.
From inside the locked room.
Three slow knocks.
Deliberate.
Patient.
Siya stood up immediately, heart racing.
Aarav didn’t move.
He was already there.
Facing the door.
Like he had been waiting for it to ask him something.
Siya approached slowly from behind him.
“Aarav…” she whispered. “What are you doing?”
He didn’t answer at first.
Then, quietly—
“I should’ve told you earlier.”
Siya froze. “Told me what?”
Aarav looked at the door.
And this time, his voice didn’t carry denial anymore.
Only weight.
“I was part of the engagement arrangement,” he said.
Siya blinked. “What?”
Aarav exhaled slowly. “Not directly. My family was involved. The Mehta name was connected to theirs.”
Silence swallowed the corridor.
Siya stepped back slightly. “Connected how?”
Aarav hesitated.
Then—
“Maya was supposed to marry into a deal. Not just a marriage.”
Siya felt her stomach drop.
From inside the room, something shifted.
A soft dragging sound.
Like someone sitting up slowly in the dark.
Maya’s voice came again.
But this time, it wasn’t directed at Siya.
It was directed at him.
“You watched.”
Aarav closed his eyes.
Siya stared at him. “Aarav… what is she talking about?”
He finally looked at Siya.
And what she saw in his eyes wasn’t fear.
It was guilt.
The house reacted immediately.
The locked door creaked inward slightly.
Not opening fully.
But no longer resisting either.
From the gap underneath, a cold draft spread into the hallway.
And then—
a smell.
Old flowers.
Wilted wedding garlands.
Siya stepped closer despite herself.
“Aarav… talk.”
His voice broke slightly.
“I was outside the house that night,” he said.
Silence.
“I came to stop it.”
Siya whispered, “Stop what?”
Aarav swallowed hard.
But the truth had already started breaking free.
Inside the room, Maya spoke again.
And this time—
her voice was clearer than ever before.
“They didn’t let him in.”
Aarav flinched.
Siya turned sharply toward him. “Who didn’t let you in?”
Aarav’s jaw tightened.
Then he said it.
“Her family.”
A pause.
“And mine.”
The hallway went cold instantly.
Not metaphorically.
Physically.
Siya could see her breath now.
The house had changed temperature like it was reacting emotionally.
From inside the room—
a soft laugh.
Not joyful.
Not cruel.
Just hollow.
“Everyone was there.”
Siya turned slowly toward the door.
“What do you mean everyone?”
The handle moved again.
This time harder.
A faint scraping sound came from inside.
Like nails against wood.
Aarav stepped forward suddenly.
“No,” he said sharply. “Don’t open it.”
Siya turned to him. “Why?”
Aarav’s voice cracked.
“Because if she shows you what happened… you won’t see this house the same way again.”
Siya froze.
And then—
a whisper came from inside the room.
Right against the wood.
Directed at Siya now.
“He didn’t save me.”
Silence.
Then—
“He watched me die.”
Siya stepped back instantly.
Her mind refused to process it fully.
Aarav shook his head quickly. “That’s not true.”
But his voice didn’t sound convincing anymore.
From inside the room, the final piece of truth began to form.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like it had been waiting years to be spoken.
“The wedding was tomorrow.”
“But the night before… they changed everything.”
Siya’s breath shook. “Aarav…”
He didn’t answer.
Because the house had already decided who it belonged to now.
And it wasn’t him.
The door finally opened.
Just a few inches.
Not fully.
But enough.
Enough for Siya to see darkness inside.
And something sitting in it.
Still.
Watching.
Waiting for recognition.
And Aarav finally whispered the last truth he had buried since the day they arrived.
“I didn’t tell you because… I thought she was gone.”
A pause.
“But she never left.”
Inside the room, Maya Sharma finally stepped closer to the light.
Not free.
Not forgiven.
Just seen.
And that was enough to begin what the house had been waiting for all along.
