** Something He Couldn’t Name**
Lucas pulled away first.
Not abruptly. Not harshly.
Just enough to breathe again.
The air felt different now.
Too close. Too real.
He wiped his face quickly, turning slightly so Adam wouldn’t see too much. Old habits didn’t disappear that easily.
“I’m fine,” he muttered.
Adam didn’t react to the words.
“You don’t look fine.”
Lucas let out a quiet, almost tired laugh.
“Yeah, well… looks can be wrong.”
A small silence settled between them again.
But it wasn’t the same as before.
Something had changed.
Lucas could still feel it—the warmth from that hug, like it hadn’t fully disappeared yet. It lingered in a way he wasn’t used to. Not like the quick, empty attention he usually chased.
This felt… steady.
And that made him uneasy.
He shifted his weight slightly, avoiding Adam’s eyes.
“You didn’t have to do that,” he said.
“Do what?”
Lucas hesitated.
“…that.”
Adam shrugged lightly.
“I wanted to.”
That answer hit differently than it should have.
No reason. No explanation.
Just… *I wanted to.*
Lucas frowned slightly, like he was trying to understand something that didn’t make sense.
“Why?” he asked quietly.
Adam looked at him for a second, then said—
“Because you looked like you needed it.”
Simple.
Direct.
No hesitation.
Lucas didn’t respond.
Because for once… there was nothing to argue with.
Another silence.
Lucas sat down on the ground, leaning his back against the wall. After a second, Adam sat next to him—close, but not too close.
Not forcing anything.
Lucas stared ahead, his voice quieter now.
“I don’t usually… do that.”
“I figured.”
Lucas glanced at him.
“What does that mean?”
Adam shrugged again.
“You don’t seem like someone who lets people see that side of you.”
Lucas looked away.
“Yeah. Well… there’s a reason for that.”
Adam didn’t push.
Didn’t ask.
And somehow, that made Lucas want to say more.
“I just—” he stopped, exhaling slowly. “I don’t like feeling like that.”
“Like what?”
Lucas hesitated.
“…like I don’t matter.”
The words came out softer than he expected.
Almost like they didn’t belong to him.
Adam didn’t react immediately.
Then—
“You do.”
Lucas let out a small breath, shaking his head slightly.
“You don’t even know me.”
“I don’t have to know everything about you to know that.”
Lucas didn’t answer.
Because part of him wanted to believe it.
And another part refused.
They sat there in silence again.
But Lucas noticed something this time.
He wasn’t uncomfortable.
He wasn’t trying to fill the space with words or jokes.
He was just… there.
With Adam.
And that should’ve felt boring.
Pointless.
But it didn’t.
It felt—
Calm.
Lucas frowned slightly at the feeling.
He wasn’t used to calm.
Calm didn’t rush. Didn’t disappear. Didn’t demand anything from him.
It just stayed.
And for some reason… that scared him more than anything else.
After a while, Adam stood up.
“We should go back before someone notices.”
Lucas nodded slowly, standing as well.
They walked to the door.
This time, Lucas unlocked it.
The small click sounded different now.
Lighter.
Before opening it, he paused.
Then, without looking at Adam, he said—
“…thanks.”
Adam nodded once.
“Anytime.”
Lucas opened the door and stepped inside.
But something followed him.
Not physically.
Something quieter.
A feeling.
One he didn’t understand yet.
One he wasn’t ready to name.
But it stayed in the back of his mind the rest of the day.
The way Adam didn’t react like everyone else.
The way he didn’t need anything from him.
The way that hug felt… real.
Lucas didn’t think of it as “liking him.”
Not yet.
He just knew one thing—
For the first time in a long time…
He didn’t want to go back to the way things were before.
