Chapter 05
Sergeant Eduardo Santos
The night had been long, but I managed to sleep. My body was still sore. It felt like I had been hit by a truck, and I could only imagine how the other guy had ended up. Judging by the state of that room, a war had happened in there. Just thinking about that scent, about those lips moving down my body, sent an electric wave through me.
I didn't want to repeat that experience. It was something I needed to keep buried. No one needed to know I had slept with a man, or that it had been one of the hottest nights of my life.
"What the fuck am I thinking?"
I had been dating Lisa for two years, and I had never had sex with her without a condom. And that night, it had happened. What would she do if she found out I had fucked a guy all night? Whenever I heard someone talk about sex between men, I used to feel nauseated, imagining it had to be disgusting. But the truth was, it hadn't been. Sex between men was different, but from what I had experienced, it had given me a lot of pleasure. Lisa had never wanted anal sex with me. She always said I was too big.
I had to forget that damned incident. It was a slip in my life, and it would not happen again. I needed a clear head to receive Sergeant Santiago.
I didn't care how impeccable his record was. What mattered to me was how he would behave on my team. The guy liked working alone, and I felt we were going to have problems with him.
I dressed quickly and headed for the precinct. Judging by the movement on the avenue, there had been an accident on the other side of the highway. It was the kind of thing that happened every day. The weather was very hot for that time of year. I arrived at the precinct and went straight to my office. There was a reserved area where my team worked.
I worked with a team of specialists who investigated and arrested gangs that stole merchandise. We had been working for days on an investigation into a large gang that was giving us trouble. The thieves had the population in a panic, but their biggest victims were rich people. They liked stealing luxury cars to sell in other states. We were almost six months into the investigation, but we still didn't have anything concrete enough to make an arrest. The guys were well organized.
The new sergeant was coming precisely to be part of our team. He had a good resume, especially in investigations.
"Good morning," I said when I entered the room, drawing everyone's attention.
I looked around the enormous room and didn't see any sign of a new person. That meant the sergeant was already late on his first day of work.
All the officers were at their respective stations.
"Where's the new guy?" I asked immediately.
"Sergeant, he hasn't arrived yet," Mauro answered.
"I knew it. This guy won't last long with us. He needs commitment. He's probably hungover."
I saw the way they looked at me.
A knock at the door made me turn, and what I saw left me without solid ground. Those eyes were there, staring at me without a hint of light. My nightmare was standing in the doorway of my office. He wore black jeans and a white shirt with a few bloodstains on it, a jacket over his arm and a helmet in his hand.
Incredibly, the guy gave no reaction that suggested he had ever seen me before.
"Sergeant Santiago reporting," he said, his voice filling the room.
The officers stood and greeted him properly.
"Welcome, Sergeant Santiago," Victor said.
He entered the room and greeted each officer one by one. For a minute, my world stopped.
"I'm Sergeant Eduardo Santos," I introduced myself.
I extended my hand, and he did the same. When our hands touched, it felt like an electric current passed between them.
He was about to say something, but we were interrupted by the arrival of an officer carrying a clean shirt over his arm.
"Sergeant Santiago, I got a clean shirt for you," the young man said, handing it to him.
"There's a bathroom at the end of the hall. You can change there, sir."
I watched him leave the room and finally managed to breathe.
"What happened to him?" Marta asked the officer.
"He helped save a little girl in the accident on the highway earlier," the officer explained before leaving.
At that moment, I wanted to bury my face in a hole.
"Guys, did you see him? The man is gorgeous," Marta declared, running a hand over her face and pretending to faint.
"Please, Marta. He's just a man," Mauro grumbled.
"Will you stop that? I'm going to the bathroom quickly to apologize to the sergeant."
I left fast, heading straight for the bathroom. I found him there wearing only pants, no shirt, and my eyes went right to the marks on his chest too. When he saw me come in, he showed no reaction. Maybe he didn't remember what had happened, or maybe he didn't recognize me.
"I want to apologize for what I said," I was the first to speak.
He only stared at me, very serious.
"I'm used to judgment, Sergeant Santos. No problem."
That was the voice that had moaned in my ear twenty-four hours earlier.
"Sergeant, I... I want to clarify something else."
He didn't stop what he was doing to look at me.
"No need."
"I don't want you to think I'm like that. I'm not gay, and I don't go to bars looking for easy sex with anyone. I have a fiancee..."
I heard him press his lips together before speaking.
"I'm not easy sex, Sergeant. And I don't care whether you're gay or not. What happened was the effect of some drug someone put in your drink. I won't say I didn't like it. It was a very good night of sex. But I don't go around talking about what I do between four walls."
In that moment, I wanted to break his face.
"Good. I'm glad you think that way. I don't want my team thinking differently of me."
"Sergeant, I don't care what other people think of me. But I respect your opinion. It wouldn't be good for your team to know you fucked me while under the effect of some drug. And it's not because you're the second guy who has had me that I'm going to ask you to marry me," he said with irony, leaving me pissed as hell.
"What the fuck are you talking about? Are you trying to provoke me?"
"I'm a guy who likes guys, but I'm not some little woman dreaming of men like they're Prince Charming. You're hot as hell, Sergeant, but I'm past that stage. It'll be better if everyone thinks we're meeting for the first time right now. And about what you said in your office, your opinion doesn't interest me. I'm here because they thought I could be useful to your team, and that's all."
He said all of it looking straight into my face.
"Since we've clarified everything here in this bathroom, let's go back to the room. We need to bring you up to speed on all our operations."
I left the bathroom very irritated. No one had ever stood up to me that way. The guy was hard, but I was going to show him I was harder than he was. He came after me, following me, and we entered the room almost together.
"Sergeant, congratulations on rescuing that child earlier," Marta said.
Everyone applauded Sergeant Santiago.
Santiago pulled out an empty chair, and we began showing him everything that was happening in the city. We showed him photos, videos, and audio recordings so he could understand what had been happening during those six months.
The meeting lasted almost three hours. Each officer said something important, and Santiago spent the whole time writing everything down in a little notebook. He only listened and watched, but he didn't say anything.
I didn't know what was happening to me, but for a few minutes my thoughts betrayed me. I remembered him naked over me, moaning and gripping me. I needed to find a woman to sleep with. Even when I was with Lisa, I never remembered our nights of sex like this.
The guy was right there in front of me, and to my despair, he was very handsome. A real bad boy.
The meeting ended at lunchtime.
"Sergeant Eduardo, can we have lunch nearby?" Mauro asked.
"Good idea, Mauro."
I looked at Santiago, and he was leafing through his notebook.
"Are you coming to lunch, Sergeant Santiago?" Marta invited him.
At that moment, he raised his face and opened a wide smile.
"Thank you for the invitation, but I already have something to do at this hour." He stood and picked up the jacket from the back of his chair. "Everyone, I promise the next lunch is on me."
He passed by me without looking and disappeared through the door.
"Damn, boss. Looks like the handsome one already has an appointment," Marta murmured right by my ear.
"It's probably a guy. If I were gay, I'd go after him. The man is handsome and charming," Victor joked.
"Are you all losing your minds? He's the sergeant. He's here to work and nothing more. What he does outside this room doesn't matter."
I said it for everyone to hear, but I was also saying it to myself.
"Well, the new sergeant has gone to lunch, and we're going to lunch too," Douglas said, standing from his computer.
