The blue light of the monitors reflected in Adriano’s eyes, making them look like cold, polished flint. He hadn't slept. He had replayed the footage of the previous night the way Lorenzo’s mouth had bruised hers, the way his hands had roamed her skin until the pixels blurred into a smear of static.
They hadn't crossed the final line. Adriano knew that. He had analyzed the bio-vitals, the duration of the encounter, and the heat signatures. But it didn't matter.
The sanctity of the "first" had been breached. Lorenzo Vance, a man who treated women like disposable statistics, had tasted the one thing Adriano had curated for months.
"You're a parasite, Lorenzo," Adriano whispered, his voice cracking from disuse.
He stood up, stretching his lean, muscular frame. Adriano didn't have the bulky, obvious muscle of a football captain; his was the wire thin, dangerous strength of a predator. He was objectively more striking sharper jawline, eyes that held a terrifying depth but he was a ghost by choice. To be seen was to be vulnerable.
The next morning at Silvergate University was a masterclass in performative cruelty.
Lorenzo was draped over a stone bench in the courtyard, a girl in a crop top perched on his lap, another leaning over his shoulder. He was laughing, his hand lazily tracing the small of a girl’s back while his eyes scanned the crowd.
When he spotted Alessia standing near the fountain, his smirk widened.
He didn't look away; instead, he pulled the girl on his lap into a deep, messy kiss, his eyes remaining fixed on Alessia over the girl’s shoulder.
It was a taunt. A reminder that last night meant nothing to him but another trophy.
Alessia felt the bile rise in her throat. Her lips still felt swollen from his touch, a mark of a "first" she now bitterly regretted. She felt small, exposed, and utterly foolish. She needed a shield. She needed to prove that the golden boy wasn't the only sun in the sky.
She turned on her heel, her eyes searching the shaded corners of the quad. She found him sitting alone under a sprawling oak tree, a laptop on his knees. Adriano.
He didn't look up as she approached. He didn't have to. He had tracked her heart rate via her smartwatch from the moment she entered the gates. He knew she was coming. He knew she was desperate.
"Adriano," she said, her voice trembling with suppressed tears and fury.
He finally looked up. His gaze was icy, his expression unreadable and mean. "You’re blocking my light, Alessia."
"I... I wanted to ask you something." She stepped closer, her shadow falling over his keyboard. "Everyone thinks you're just the 'tech guy,' but I know you're more than that. I need... I want to go out. Tonight. With you."
Adriano felt a surge of dark, electric triumph. This was the moment he had calculated, though he hadn't expected her to hand it to him on a silver platter.
He closed his laptop with a sharp *click*.
"A date?" he asked, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous register.
"Why? Because the captain decided to play with his other toys today?"
Alessia flinched, the color draining from her face.
"It's not about him."
"Liar," Adriano said softly, standing up. He was a head taller than her, his presence suddenly suffocating and cold. He reached out, his fingers catching a stray lock of her hair. He tucked it behind her ear, his touch lingering just a second too long on the skin he knew Lorenzo had kissed.
"You want to use me to make him bleed. You want a distraction."
"Will you do it?" she whispered, looking up at him.
Adriano leaned down, his lips inches from her ear. He could smell the lavender on her skin, mixed with the faint, lingering scent of Lorenzo’s cologne. It made him want to burn the world down.
"I don't do 'dates,' Alessia. If I take you out, I’m not playing a part in your little revenge fantasy. If you walk with me, you’re mine. No more windows left open for him. No more lingering looks in the hallway."
He pulled back, his eyes searching hers with a possessive intensity that should have terrified her.
"Tonight. Seven o'clock," he commanded. "And wear something that covers your neck. I don't want to see his marks on what belongs to me."
He walked away without waiting for an answer, leaving Alessia shivering in the heat. She thought she was finding a protector. She had no idea she had just walked into a cage far more permanent than anything Lorenzo could build.
