Chapter 5: secrets in the library

The Silverwood library at midnight was a labyrinth of oak and silence. Elara had "borrowed" a key from Leo to retrieve the notebook she’d forgotten, her footsteps echoing like heartbeats against the marble floor. The towering shelves cast long, skeletal shadows, making the space feel less like a place of learning and more like a cathedral of secrets.

She rounded the corner of the History section and stopped dead.

A single lamp was glowing in the far alcove. Under its amber light sat Julian. His tie was undone, hanging loosely around his neck like a noose, and his head was buried in his hands. Gone was the icy prince of the courtyard; in his place was someone who looked entirely frayed at the edges.

On the table in front of him sat a heavy, leather-bound volume and a sleek tablet displaying a series of aggressive, red-lined spreadsheets.

"Julian?" Elara whispered.

He flinched, his head snapping up. For a split second, his eyes were wide and raw before the shutters slammed back down. "Vance. What are you doing here? This area is off-limits."

"I could ask you the same thing," she said, stepping into the circle of light. She noticed a crumpled piece of paper near his hand—a letter with the Sterling family crest. The words *Expected Returns* and *Unacceptable Failure* stood out in bold ink. "Is that for the project?"

Julian let out a short, jagged laugh. "No. That’s for my life. My father doesn't care about biology projects, Elara. He cares about the Sterling name being synonymous with 'First Place.' Anything less is... a waste of his resources."

He looked back down at the heavy book—a genealogy of industrial empires. "He’s already mapped out my next ten years. The board meetings, the merger, the marriage. I’m not a son to him. I’m a stock option."

Elara felt a sudden, sharp pang of empathy that she didn't want. She reached out, her fingers brushing the edge of the heavy book he was gripping. "You're nineteen, Julian. You aren't a piece of property."

"In this world, everyone is property," he murmured, his voice dropping to a low, broken frequency. He looked up at her, and the distance between them seemed to evaporate. "Do you know what my secret is, Vance? Sometimes... I wish your car had never stopped. I wish it had just kept driving, and I was in the passenger seat."

The air in the library grew thick, charged with the same static that had sparked in his lab. Julian stood up slowly, his height looming over her, but his movements were hesitant, almost pleading. He reached out, his thumb grazing her jawline, his touch surprisingly gentle.

"You've been a stain on my perfect life since the day you got here," he whispered, his face inches from hers. "And I can't stop thinking about it."

Elara’s breath hitched. She should pull away; she should mention Caspian or the bet or the fact that they were from different worlds. But as he leaned in, his eyes fixed on her lips, her eyes fluttered shut. The scent of sandalwood and old paper swirled around them.

He was so close she could feel the heat radiating off his skin. His hand slid into her hair, pulling her a fraction of an inch closer—

**BZZZZT. BZZZZT.**

The harsh, violent vibration of a phone on the wooden table shattered the silence.

Julian recoiled as if he’d been electrocuted. He looked at the screen. **FATHER.**

The vulnerability vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, robotic mask. He snatched the phone up, his posture straightening until he looked like a soldier.

"I have to take this," he said, his voice now devoid of any emotion. He didn't look at her as he stepped out of the light and into the shadows of the stacks. "Forget you saw me like this, Elara. Go home."

Elara stood alone in the amber glow, her lips still tingling from the kiss that didn't happen. The spell wasn't just broken; it had been incinerated.
