CHAPTER 5

The Point of No Return

The silence following Daniel’s words was heavy, thick with the kind of tension that usually precedes a storm. Ava could feel the steady, frantic thrum of his heart through his chest, a mirror to the chaos currently unfolding in her own. The rain lashed harder against the kitchen window now, blurring the lights of the city into smears of gold and gray.

Daniel’s hand remained firm against her jaw, his thumb still tracing the line of her lip with a slow, agonizing deliberation. He was waiting. He was giving her that final, fleeting second to push him away to remind him of the badge, of Dexter, of the life they were supposed to be building.

But Ava didn't move. She couldn't.

"You're shaking," Daniel whispered, his voice a rough vibration that seemed to settle deep in her bones.

"Because I know how this ends, Daniel," she managed to say, her voice trembling.

"Dexter doesn't just lose a friend if he finds out. He loses his foundation. We’re the only people he actually lets his guard down around."

Daniel’s eyes darkened, a flash of guilt flickering through the intensity. "I know. I think about it every time he asks me for advice or trusts me with a key to this place. But then I come here, and I see you, and that guilt just... it turns into something else. It turns into hunger."

He leaned in closer, his nose brushing against hers. The scent of him woodsmoke and cold rain was intoxicating.

"I’ve spent my whole life being the 'good guy,' Ava. The one who follows the rules. The one who waits his turn. But I'm done waiting."

Without warning, his hand slid from her jaw to the back of her neck, his fingers tangling into her hair to tilt her head back. It wasn't a gentle movement; it was a claim. Before she could gasp, his mouth was on hers.

The kiss was everything they had been suppressing for months desperate, messy, and fueled by a decade of unspoken longing. It tasted of forbidden fruit and the terrifying adrenaline of a high-speed chase. Daniel groaned low in his throat, pulling her body flush against his until she could feel every hard line of him. The granite counter pressed into her back, but she barely felt it, too caught up in the way his hands were now roaming her waist, pulling her closer as if he were trying to merge their very shadows.

He broke the kiss for a split second, his breath hitching against her lips. "Tell me to stop," he rasped, his eyes searching hers for even a hint of hesitation. "Tell me right now, and I’ll walk out that door and never touch you again."

Ava looked up at him, her lips swollen and her pulse screaming. She thought of Dexter at the precinct, probably joking with the Chief about how lucky he was to have a partner like Daniel. She thought of the family dinners and the shared dreams.

Then she looked at Daniel—really looked at the man who was willing to burn his entire world down just to be near her.

"Don't stop," she whispered.

Daniel didn't need to be told twice. He hoisted her up onto the counter, his hands sliding under her thighs to pull her legs around his waist. The movement was fluid, practiced in his mind a thousand times before tonight. His mouth found the sensitive skin of her throat, leaving a trail of fire in its wake.

"You’re mine," he muttered against her skin, his voice possessive and raw. "Not his sister. Not my best friend's sibling. Just mine."

They were so lost in each other that the sound of the world outside ceased to exist. The ticking clock, the rain, the looming threat of the law it all faded into the background.

But then, the distant sound of a car door slamming shut echoed from the street below.

Daniel froze, his muscles locking tight. He pulled back, his eyes darting toward the window. Down in the driveway, the familiar headlights of Dexter’s sedan cut through the rain.

The hour was up.

"He’s here," Ava breathed, her eyes wide with sudden, sharp terror.

Daniel scrambled to pull her down from the counter, his hands shaking as he smoothed her shirt and tried to catch his own breath. He looked like a man who had just committed a crime and was trying to hide the evidence before the sirens arrived.

"Go to your room," Daniel hissed, his voice urgent as he shoved his messy hair back into place. "Now, Ava. Don't let him see you like this."

Ava didn't argue. She bolted for the hallway, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She made it to her door and shut it just as the sound of the front door lock turning echoed through the apartment.

She leaned her back against the wood, her lungs burning, hearing the muffled sound of Dexter’s voice as he stepped into the living room.

"Man, it's pouring out there," Dexter said, his voice sounding entirely too normal, too cheerful. "You finish that report, Daniel? You look like you’ve seen a ghost."

Ava closed her eyes, clutching her stomach. They had crossed the line. There was no going back now only the terrifying wait to see when the floor would finally give way beneath them.
