The Answer He Chose

Nikhil didn’t go to the library the next day.

For the first time—

He stayed away.

Not because he didn’t care.

But because he was tired of waiting without answers.

Still, her words followed him everywhere.

“Some people are meant to stay in moments…”

He sat on his bed that evening, the folded paper in his hand.

He read it again.

And again.

“Why would you leave like that?” he whispered.

It didn’t feel complete.

It didn’t feel fair.

And maybe that’s what bothered him the most—

Not the distance.

But the silence.

The next day, he went back.

Not out of habit.

But with a decision.

The library looked the same.

Calm.

Quiet.

Unchanged.

But he wasn’t.

He walked straight to the table.

Sat down.

Waited.

Five minutes.

Ten.

Twenty.

Then—

A shadow fell across the table.

“You came.”

Nikhil looked up.

Anaya stood there.

For a second—

Neither of them moved.

Then she sat down.

Slowly.

Carefully.

“I thought you wouldn’t,” she said.

“I didn’t think you would,” he replied.

A faint smile appeared on her face.

Then disappeared.

Silence.

But this time—

It didn’t feel safe.

Nikhil took out the folded paper and placed it between them.

“You left this.”

She looked at it.

Didn’t touch it.

“I meant it.”

“I know,” he said.

Then he leaned forward slightly.

“But I don’t accept it.”

That made her look at him.

Really look.

“You don’t get to decide how this ends without even trying,” he continued.

Her expression changed.

Not defensive.

Not distant.

Just… unsure.

“This isn’t just a moment anymore,” he said quietly.

She looked down at her hands.

“Then what is it?”

He didn’t hesitate.

“It’s something I don’t want to leave unfinished.”

The words stayed between them.

Real.

Unavoidable.

For the first time—

Anaya didn’t look away.

But she didn’t smile either.

Because sometimes—

The hardest part isn’t leaving.

It’s deciding…

Whether to stay. 💔✨

Anaya stayed silent for a long moment.

Her fingers tightened slightly around the edge of the table.

“You don’t understand,” she said finally.

“Then explain,” Nikhil replied, calm but firm.

She let out a slow breath, as if the words were heavier than she wanted them to be.

“This always happens,” she said. “I start getting comfortable… and then everything changes.”

“Not everything has to,” he said.

She shook her head. “It does. People leave. Situations change. And I’m left wishing I didn’t let it matter.”

Nikhil watched her carefully.

“So your solution is to leave first?”

She didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

He leaned back slightly, his voice softer now.

“I’m not asking for forever.”

She looked up.

“I’m just asking for honesty,” he continued. “If you feel something—say it. If you don’t—say that too. But don’t disappear and call it an ending.”

Her eyes softened.

Not fully.

But enough to show she was listening.

“I don’t know how to stay,” she admitted quietly.

Nikhil gave a small nod.

“Then don’t promise anything. Just… don’t run.”

The room felt still.

Like everything around them had paused.

Anaya looked at him, really looked this time.

As if she was trying to decide something important.

“Why does this matter so much to you?” she asked.

He didn’t look away.

“Because you do.”

The answer was simple.

But it carried everything he hadn’t said before.

For a second, her expression broke—

Just a little.

Then she looked down, blinking away something she didn’t want him to see.

“I’m scared,” she whispered.

Nikhil didn’t move closer.

Didn’t interrupt.

He just said—

“Me too.”

And somehow—

That felt like the most honest thing either of them had said so far.

No promises.

No guarantees.

Just two people—

Standing at the edge of something real.

Not knowing what would happen next.

But for the first time—

Not walking away from it either. 💖✨
