Prisoner

Issue One of “Barklock Penitentiary” opens during a thunderstorm above Blackreef Island, where the world’s most dangerous animals are locked inside a towering high tier prison surrounded by icy water and electric fences. Sirens scream while armored guards rush through steel corridors. In Cell 99 sits Brodie, a scarred German Shepherd falsely accused of attacking a government convoy. Rumors claim he once led a legendary rescue squad, but nobody inside the prison believes heroic stories anymore.

Brodie survives each day by keeping quiet, avoiding gang fights, and secretly sketching maps into the concrete floor using broken nails. His only friend is Beans, a tiny Chihuahua hacker imprisoned for stealing classified files from corrupt officials. Beans trades information for scraps of food and constantly jokes about escaping, even though every inmate knows nobody has ever left Blackreef alive.

The prison is ruled by Warden Vex, a massive Doberman with a silver mechanical eye and a reputation for cruelty. Vex stages violent combat tournaments between inmates to entertain wealthy viewers watching from secret underground lounges. Winners receive better meals and temporary freedom inside the yard, while losers disappear into the basement called The Kennels.

One night, the prison loses power for exactly twelve seconds. During the blackout, Brodie hears terrified barking echo from below the floor grates. The sound resembles military distress codes he learned years earlier. When the lights return, several guards drag a bloodstained Husky through the hallway. Before collapsing, the Husky whispers one warning to Brodie: “The moon vault opens soon.”

Curious and disturbed, Brodie begins investigating. Beans hacks into prison security terminals using wires hidden inside his collar. Together they discover blueprints revealing a secret laboratory beneath Blackreef. Vex has been experimenting on inmates, turning them into enhanced soldiers for wealthy corporations preparing for war. The mysterious Moon Vault contains evidence proving Brodie’s innocence and exposing powerful leaders connected to the prison.

Meanwhile, tensions explode between rival inmate gangs. A brutal Pit Bull named Crusher controls the lower blocks and demands loyalty from weaker prisoners. Crusher challenges Brodie to a televised arena fight after hearing rumors about his military past. During the battle, Brodie refuses to kill Crusher despite having the chance. The audience boos, but several inmates quietly begin respecting him.

That respect becomes dangerous. Vex realizes Brodie could unite the prisoners and threaten his operation. He orders elite guards called Fang Units to capture Beans and throw him into The Kennels. Furious, Brodie finally abandons caution. He fights through corridors filled with smoke grenades, riot shields, and attack drones while alarms shake the prison walls.

The issue ends with Brodie reaching the underground laboratory. Inside glass chambers, mutated canine experiments growl in darkness beside rows of stolen military weapons. At the center of the room stands Beans, chained beside a giant steel vault marked with a glowing moon symbol. Warden Vex steps from the shadows holding a remote detonator and smiles coldly.

“Welcome to the truth,” he says.

Outside the prison, a mysterious rescue pilot named Luna flies toward Blackreef through the storm after intercepting the same distress signal Brodie heard during the blackout. She carries old photographs showing Brodie beside decorated soldiers and frightened puppies saved during a wartime evacuation years earlier. As lightning flashes across the ocean, Luna loads a flare gun, checks the fuel gauge, and whispers, “Hold on a little longer, partner. I’m coming tonight.”
