Chapter 5 — The Truth Hidden in Shadows

The bracelet felt heavier than it should have.

Aisha sat quietly on her bed that night, staring at the silver band resting in her palm while rain tapped softly against the window.

Ethan’s bracelet.

His mother’s bracelet.

The thought alone made her chest tighten.

Why would he give her something so important?

And why did it sound like goodbye when he said:

“So no matter what happens… a part of me stays with you.”

Aisha hated how worried she felt.

She barely knew him.

Yet somehow, Ethan had already become part of her thoughts, her heartbeat, her silence.

Her mother noticed immediately the next morning.

“You’re smiling at jewelry now?”

Aisha nearly dropped the bracelet.

“Mama!”

Mrs. Daniels laughed softly from the kitchen chair.

“So this Ethan finally confessed his love?”

Aisha choked on air instantly.

“What?! No!”

“Hm.” Her mother smiled knowingly. “Then why are your cheeks red?”

Aisha covered her face dramatically.

“This is unfair.”

“It’s motherhood.”

Despite herself, Aisha laughed.

But deep inside…

Something still felt wrong.

Because behind Ethan’s gentle smiles lived fear.

And she could feel it growing stronger.

Across the city, Ethan stood inside a massive office overlooking the skyline of Lagos.

The atmosphere was cold.

Tense.

Dangerous.

A tall older man stood near the windows with his hands behind his back.

Richard Cole.

Ethan’s father.

One of the most powerful businessmen in the country.

And one of the coldest men Ethan had ever known.

“You ignored my calls.”

Ethan remained silent.

Richard turned slowly.

His sharp eyes immediately hardened.

“You’ve been careless lately.”

“I handled it.”

“That bookstore incident says otherwise.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened instantly.

So they already knew.

Of course they did.

Richard stepped closer calmly.

“You’re attracting attention.”

“They threatened an old man.”

“And that was none of your concern.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“That’s the problem with this family. Nothing matters unless money is involved.”

The room became dangerously quiet.

Richard’s expression darkened slightly.

“You’re getting emotional again.”

“And you’ve never been human.”

The words hung sharply in the air.

For a moment, Ethan thought his father might actually hit him.

Instead, Richard simply adjusted his cufflinks calmly.

Then spoke quietly.

“Who is the girl?”

Ethan froze.

Every instinct inside him sharpened immediately.

“What girl?”

“The one you keep visiting.”

Silence.

Dangerous silence.

Richard watched him carefully.

“You forget who you are, Ethan.”

“No,” Ethan replied coldly. “I remember exactly who I am. That’s why I’m trying to stay away from her.”

Something unreadable crossed his father’s face.

Then finally:

“Good.”

But Ethan knew that tone.

And it terrified him.

Because Richard Cole only paid attention to things he considered threats.

That evening, Aisha finished work later than usual.

The roads were crowded, noisy, alive with the chaos of the city.

She walked toward the bus stop while holding her bag tightly.

But halfway there—

A black car stopped beside her.

Aisha smiled automatically.

“Etha—”

The smile vanished instantly.

It wasn’t him.

The driver’s window rolled down slowly, revealing an unfamiliar older man in a suit.

“Miss Daniels?”

Aisha stepped back cautiously.

“…Yes?”

“My employer would like a word with you.”

Every warning inside her head screamed immediately.

“No thank you.”

“It concerns Ethan Cole.”

Her heartbeat stopped for one second.

The man opened the back door calmly.

“Please.”

Aisha hesitated.

Then slowly entered the car.

The ride lasted nearly thirty minutes.

Long enough for anxiety to grow painfully inside her chest.

Finally, the car stopped outside an enormous private restaurant overlooking the water.

Everything about the place screamed wealth.

Aisha instantly felt out of place.

The driver escorted her upstairs to a private dining room.

And there he was.

Richard Cole sat at the table quietly, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit.

His presence alone felt intimidating.

Powerful.

Cold.

He looked up slowly as Aisha entered.

For a moment, his expression remained unreadable.

Then he gestured toward the empty seat.

“Sit.”

Aisha swallowed nervously but obeyed.

Richard studied her carefully.

Not rudely.

Not disrespectfully.

But intensely.

Like a man trying to understand a problem.

“You’re younger than I expected,” he finally said.

Aisha frowned slightly.

“With respect, sir… why am I here?”

“Because my son is making dangerous decisions.”

Her chest tightened instantly.

“What does that mean?”

Richard leaned back calmly.

“Ethan has responsibilities. Expectations. A future that cannot include unnecessary distractions.”

The meaning behind the words hit her immediately.

Aisha’s fingers curled beneath the table.

“I’m not trying to ruin his future.”

“I know.” Richard’s voice remained emotionless. “That’s what makes you different from the others.”

Others?

How many girls had Ethan known before her?

The thought hurt more than expected.

Richard continued calmly.

“My son becomes reckless when emotionally attached.”

Aisha looked up sharply.

“You talk about him like he’s a machine.”

Richard ignored the comment.

“There are things about Ethan you don’t understand.”

“Then explain them.”

For the first time, Richard’s expression shifted slightly.

Almost surprised by her courage.

“He attracts danger.”

“So do storms,” Aisha replied quietly. “People still stand in the rain.”

Silence filled the room.

Richard stared at her for several seconds.

Then finally said:

“You care about him already.”

Aisha didn’t answer.

Because denying it would be pointless.

Richard sighed softly.

“He got that weakness from his mother.”

The words felt strangely painful.

Not insulting.

Sad.

Aisha studied him carefully.

For the first time, she noticed exhaustion behind his coldness.

Loneliness.

Regret.

Before she could speak again, Richard’s phone buzzed loudly.

His expression changed instantly after reading the message.

Sharp.

Alert.

Dangerous.

He stood immediately.

“You need to leave.”

“What happened?”

“Ethan.”

Fear rushed through her chest.

“What about Ethan?!”

But Richard was already grabbing his coat.

For the first time since meeting him…

The powerful Richard Cole actually looked worried.

And that terrified her more than anything.

Rain poured heavily across the city roads.

Traffic lights blurred through water-covered windows as Aisha sat inside the moving car, her heartbeat pounding painfully.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Her mind replayed Richard’s words repeatedly.

“He attracts danger.”

Suddenly, the driver’s phone rang through the speakers.

A tense voice filled the car.

“Sir, we found him.”

Aisha’s stomach dropped instantly.

Found him?

Then another sentence came—

“There was an attack.”

Everything inside her froze.

Attack?

The car accelerated immediately through the storm.

And for the first time since meeting Ethan…

Aisha realized the darkness surrounding him was far more dangerous than she ever imagined.

Meanwhile, several streets away—

Blood dripped slowly from Ethan’s knuckles onto the wet pavement.

Rain soaked through his black shirt while three unconscious men lay nearby.

His breathing remained calm.

Controlled.

But his eyes?

Cold.

Completely emotionless.

A black SUV approached quickly.

Ethan looked up just as the headlights illuminated his face.

Then the passenger door opened.

Richard Cole stepped out slowly.

Father and son stared at each other silently beneath the rain.

“You followed me,” Ethan said coldly.

“You were warned.”

Ethan wiped blood from his mouth carelessly.

“They mentioned Aisha.”

Richard’s expression hardened immediately.

“Did they touch her?”

“No.”

“But they know about her now.”

The words hit like thunder.

Because both men understood exactly what that meant.

And somewhere inside a speeding car racing through the storm…

Aisha Daniels unknowingly drove closer to a truth that would change everything forever.
