CHAPTER FIVE:THE MIND MAZE

Inside the heavy, sterile halls of Hamlet Hospital, the nurse led Frank and Maria down a quiet corridor, finally stopping before Melissa Krull’s room. As they stepped through the doorway, the frantic energy of the outside world faded, replaced by the tinny, echoing melody of Laura Branigan’s Gloria playing from a small mini-box. Melissa sat by the window, completely lost in her own grief, softly humming along to the music in deep sadness.

"Mrs. Krull?" Maria spoke softly, breaking the silence.

Melissa turned toward them, her face pale, lined with exhaustion and a profound, lingering exhaustion.

The nurse leaned over to Frank, a soft smile on her face. "Alright, fine boy. You have five minutes." With a final glance, she stepped back out into the hallway and left them alone.

Melissa stared at the newcomers, her eyes instantly brimming with a desperate hope. "What do you want from me? Did you find her? My baby girl, Lisa?"

Maria and Frank exchanged a quick, confused look, the weight of the question hanging heavily between them.

Frank stepped closer, lowering his voice gently. "We think that thing that took your daughter is back. We need to know your side of the story."

At his words, Melissa broke down, tears spilling over her cheeks as the pop anthem continued to play on, serving as a cruel backdrop to her mourning. "This was Lisa's favorite song," Melissa sobbed, her voice trembling. "She always dreamed of meeting this Laura Branigan woman. But that... that zombie-looking guy bit me, and he took her away."

Maria felt a chill run down her spine. "Did Lisa say anything to you prior to that day?"

Melissa shook her head, weeping openly. "No, no. Since her father's passing, she's been drawing this weird-looking house. A house with a calendar inside... and it only shows one date. November 29th."

Frank and Maria froze, exchanging a look of absolute shock and mounting terror.

NEXT DAY < HAMLET DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY

Deep within the cold, subterranean laboratory, the alarms of the facility were silent, but the tension was thick. IZ was submerged inside the terrifying confines of the maze machine, trapped on the dangerous precipice of a bad memory day.

IZ'S MIND

Ten years in the past, a young, ten-year-old version of Subject One—IZ—sat in the center of her stark room. Her head was completely shaved, her eyes wide with a child's innocence. Standing before her was a seventeen-year-old version of Abel, a boy who was known around the facility simply as a guard.

"This is the day, IZ," Abel whispered, his eyes intense, looking down at her. "Master is a liar. He lied. Your name... our mom... it's all a lie. But we can be free, if you let me and you work together."

The young IZ looked up at him, trusting. "Okay."

Abel stepped forward and placed his hand firmly on top of IZ's shaved head. In an instant, his consciousness surged into her mind, seizing control of her psychic faculties. A piercing scream of pure agony tore from the young girl's throat, echoing through the empty halls of her memories.

THE HUGO RESIDENCE

The morning air outside the Hugo house was shattered by a screech of tires as Mr. and Mrs. Thompson arrived. Marching inside with absolute fury, they confronted Maria. Before anyone could speak, Mrs. Thompson raised her hand and delivered a sharp, echoing slap across Maria’s face.

"I trusted you with my daughter!" Mrs. Thompson screamed, her voice shaking with rage. "But you throw her out just like you did to Laura!"

Maria stood frozen, a deep sadness and guilt washing over her as she clutched her burning cheek, unable to offer an excuse.

"You won't get away with this," Mrs. Thompson vowed through clenched teeth.

With that, the grieving parents turned and stormed out of the house. Outside on the lawn, David, Sarah, Fabio, Charles, Owen, Kevin, Apollo, Rose, and Frank stood in a tight circle, the weight of the previous night’s horrors pressing down on them.

Charles rubbed his arms, his voice shaking. "It was the Grabber last night at Ruth's house. I felt his presence. I know it."

Rose stepped forward, her brow furrowed in skepticism. "So... so how is Ruth connected to all of this?"

Maria stepped out onto the porch, wiping the fresh tears from her eyes as she tried to compose herself. "Her name is not Ruth. Her name is Lisa Krull. Last night, Melissa described her to us, and I think Ruth is Lisa."

Sarah looked around the group, bewildered. "But why would she hide from her own mom?"

"Oh my God," Apollo breathed, the pieces clicking together in his mind. "It's because the Grabber somehow took control of her mind."

Owen shook his head, stepping up to protest. "The Grabber is dead, Apollo. IZ blurred him away."

"Yes, Owen, it's true," Apollo insisted, looking at the dark woods. "But this can only mean one thing now."

Kevin looked at the others, his voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "The Swamp Knight."

The realization sent a wave of shock through the entire party.

IZ'S MIND

The memory shifted, turning violent and red. With Abel steering her immense power, the young IZ watched in horror as her own hands became weapons, slaughtering every single subject and guard within the facility.

With a violent gasp, IZ woke up in the real world, trembling with absolute fear. MK Ultra was immediately at her side, pulling her out of the maze machine as she shook violently.

"I killed them, Master," IZ choked out, tears streaming down her face as the floodgates of her mind opened wide. "I killed them... didn't I?"

MK Ultra looked at her, a calculated glimmer of satisfaction in his eyes. "I think your lost powers are recovered, Subject One."

To prove his words, IZ focused her gaze on a small cup of water resting on a nearby table. With a sharp breath, she lifted her chin, and the cup rose into the air, levitating perfectly under her psychic command. A tearful, bittersweet smile broke across her face.

"I need to go to my friends," IZ pleaded, her voice cracking. "They think I died at Brickwall Mall."

MK Ultra firmly caught her by the shoulders. "Not yet, IZ. We need to prepare you. Abel might still be out there."

"No, no, they need me!" IZ cried out, pulling away. "When I was in there... in the machine... I saw something bad."

Suddenly, the facility’s overhead emergency alarms began to blare, a deafening red light pulsing against the concrete walls. Through the security monitors, chaos erupted. Grotesque zombie-like creatures were flooding the corridors, appearing out of nowhere and savagely attacking the personnel. Panic seizing him, MK Ultra grabbed IZ and pulled her into a secure, fortified room, slamming the heavy door shut.

"What are these things?" IZ asked in absolute terror, her eyes locked onto the shifting camera footage on the wall.

MK Ultra stared at the monitors, a rare expression of pure fear gripping his features. "They are here to hurt us. We have to hide."

A loud, splintering crash echoed through the room as the creatures began tearing through the fortified door. They burst inside, snarls ripping from their rotting throats.

Instead of shrinking back, IZ stepped forward, her eyes narrowing as she unleashed her newly restored powers. She threw her hands out, sending a massive kinetic wave that crushed the first line of monsters against the walls. But there were too many of them, a relentless wave of decaying flesh flooding the room. Summoning every ounce of strength and psychic energy left in her body, IZ threw her head back and let out one final, earth-shattering scream.

The raw power exploded outward, obliterating the remaining creatures into nothingness. As the echo of her scream died down, IZ’s eyes rolled back, and she collapsed to the floor, completely unconscious.
